The original House of the Dead with updated graphics and a few new features added. Saving all the scientists allows you to unlock four different weapons you can switch to during normal gameplay. A crossbow that does high damage and is good against bosses, a gun that fires large wooden spikes that does high damage and can pin enemies to walls and launch them around, a grenade launcher mostly included for another new mode, and an automatic rifle that does less damage than the gun but fires quickly and holds 30 shots. There is a new horde mode that significantly increases the number of enemies, it doesn't add new areas but does have you attacked from some additional angles. A new scoring mode was added along with some difficulty options that can increase the amount of damage enemies take and there are some options for changing blood color, change reticle color, to set auto reloads, for aim assist, mouse sensitivity. I wouldn't want to try playing this with a controller and it's not going to be as fun unless you buy one of those newer $150-$400 rumble light-guns that work on HD TVs and monitors but it works reasonable well with the mouse.

The real problem is the fairly high price asked for the game and the first House of the Dead is a short game with only a few side paths in the first three stages and nothing that interesting mechanically other than saving the scientists. The new guns can be fun to use, especially the spike shooting gun and the horse mode puts more action in the game but the best ports of these games are things like Time Crisis 3's PS2 port that added a large number of challenge maps and an entire second campaign with a side character of the main game or Vampire Night's PS2 release that added a lot of side quest and unlockables.

It's a fun but fairly bare bones offering that would need you to buy an expensive HD supporting light-gun (Sinden/Gun4IR) for it to reach its full potential.

Fun to play with people. Has some cool features like multiple routes and an achievement system, but nothing to write home about. I don't remember OG HOTD being this short either. Sega and Nintendo really should've dropped extra bread to include some light guns with the game or something. An attempt to bring a classic into the modern era that just ends up falling a little short.

Finished this in 30 minutes lmao. This game was 50% off and it's a title I hold a lot of nostalgia for, having played this with my dad at the local arcade during my childhood, and I still think it ain't worth the money. It should be $5, maximum.

I love how they kept in the bullshit instant hits that enemies can pull off before the camera is even finished moving. No joke, some of these enemies move so fast that if you blink you will get damaged. The original arcade cabinets had an excuse for this being that they needed to take as much coins as possible from you, but here, I don't know why they kept it in considering you have infinite retries.

The graphics are certainly better but graphics alone do not make a game. Voice acting is intentionally terrible so I'll let that slide, but the music is a big downgrade in my opinion. Other than the fact that you can barely hear it in game, it's just straight up worse compared to the original. Seriously, compare the Magician's theme from the original to his theme in the remake. The original sounds so much better.

Pretty disappointing remake, and now that I know what to expect from the devs, I have next to no excitement for the HOTD2 remake.

remake's main features are being considerably less readable than the original and having bad loading times

completed in arcade difficulty

pese a sus carencias es muy divertido

Way shorter than expected (under one hour). Still had a ton of fun and I'm looking to play it with friends in parties. It helped me remember the times at the arcade with my brother, so that was nice too. Looking forward to the sequel.

listen I adore the original game to death and I wanted to love this, but the motion controls on Switch just do not work for precision aiming and a lot of the charm was lost visually imo, the soundtrack especially was for the worse

Best $25 spent only because i can relive my glory days as an AMS Agent with an infinite amount of magazines to kill hordes of mutants

Its ugly. Its hideous. Its overly faithful to an outdated game. Forever Entertainment have a good heart, but dont have an artist or a vision.

I think I accidentally shot more scientists than zombies

Honestly deserves a lot more love than it's getting on this page. It's a great recreation of the Arcade/Saturn game, bad voice acting and all. The updates to the game seemed to have easily fixed whatever performance issues were plaguing it at launch. But what I find the most commendable is that you have a cheats system that is directly reliant on what achievements you get in game. So for once, an achievement system on Nintendo Switch actually matters. Bravo. I'm definitely going back to this and I'm definitely looking forward to the HOTD2 remake, which is my favorite in the series.

I really didn't think much of this remake playing initially on the Switch. The graphics were just too laughably cheap looking and the controls barely functioned in my eyes. Jumping over to the PC version then, I didn't think much would change except for a better control scheme, but I found myself really enjoying this remake as a result. Better FPS and resolution, plus the previously mentioned mouse aiming which feels like a hot knife through butter when you get the sensitivity just right. It's not without its issues, and it's definitely not worth £20 in the slightest, but I still liked it regardless. A little rough around the edges? Sure, but isn't that the charm of HotD?

How in the f*** did this game, in its current state, get thrown onto the eShop? As if the technical issues weren't bad enough, the gyro is genuinely rage inducing with both a Pro Controller and PARTICULARLY Joy-Con, and this game is obviously way too precise to be played with the right stick. An absolute train and submarine wreck that does a complete disservice to a SEGA classic.

Any other HOTD game beats this one. Even the original HOTD 1 beats this one. Don't waste your money or time.

Un juego de maquinitas, simple pero entretenido.

House of the Dead: Remake loses points for me mostly for being a lucklustre home release that pails in comparison to something like the Dreamcast version of HOTD2 that had side modes, unlocks and powerups.

It sure is HOTD1, the weakest entry, and that's kind of it, maybe I'll turn around when HOTD2 gets remade.

The controls do hold it back. This stuff worked a lot better (in terms of IR.) with the Wii Remote. However I think this remake is great, the graphics are cool, it holds all the old charm with music and direction of voice acting. Finally have this one on home console to go alongside 2 and 3 for the Wii.

Don't remember much about the original version of this, but playing with a friend is pretty damn fun, wish there were more weapons though.

Easily the worst commercially-released game I've ever played, as I don't tend to go hunting for garbage. Runs and looks like shit, controls are a complete disaster. Apparently just a port of HotD 1-3 is too much to ask.

This game is absolute proof if I ever attempted these games in an actual arcade, I'd have made my parents bankrupt before hitting chapter 3

I harbor no nostalgia to this game, and as such it's nearly "okay"

House of the Dead 2 on the dream cast I used to beat over and over trying to discover every path and beat the game without taking damage. I didn't spend my time playing these games at the arcade so it was nice to see what came before that.

The hilariously dumb voice acting and zombie Mayhem has a certain charm only someone who experienced at the time could really love. Just like how you have a face only your mother can love.

Definitely a game only for those who want these very specific experiences. I look forward to their remake of HoTD2

Shorter than I was expecting. Still fun co-op.

It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. There's a lot more that could have been done for the remake (like bundling it with light guns like c'mon) but I'm glad it exists because for one it not only got me hooked on the House Of The Dead series but it also got me hooked on the wonderful world of the light gun genre. and for that I will always thank this remake and with the remake also being out it opens the opportunity for not only more House Of The Dead but also more light gun games in general. Like how about giving some of the Time Crysis games a remake or remaster or how about reviving good old Virtua Cop?

El modo giroscopio del mando funciona como el culo, por lo demás es un juegazo. Aunque me ha sorprendido que en una escena se me haya calado el juego un segundo, en el modo dock de la switch.

Fun to revisit, but its not like the original game was great to begin with. Sometimes the graphic changes look good, other times not so much. Don't play the switch version lol

While this game for sure is more worth $10 than $20, I don't think this was a bad remake at all. Reviving the first HOTD and giving it ample space to be seen as its own game in 2022 was for sure going to amplify the flaws, but overall I think even the remake keeps the strongest traits the original game had. Monumental for the zombie genre in video games as a whole, I'm glad this game has gotten a chance to be remembered :) would've been nice to see new additions in the remake that weren't in the original (new optional story bits/endings, or maybe new characters) but I still appreciate this for what it was. Very much looking forward to The House of the Dead 2 Remake :)

Pretty fun but the controls are just horrendous and nearly game-breaking. I appreciate the effort of getting light gun games back and this is pretty fun, but I can't get over how sloppy the controls are even with gyro aiming and special settings.

The reloading game had consequences for my life... Broke my finger
