Haven't played a game in a while that put me through such highs and lows as this one. Banging soundtrack and way more levels than the first, but they're littered with open areas and glass windows to get shot through. 12 playable characters, but they're locked to specific levels and they lack variety between a number of them (Tony = Dallas = Dirty Hands). Fucking abrupt ending out of nowhere (thank god for someone making that timeline). Overall, the game was a rush, and I'm sad that's it over.

it's strange to me that this game has received a lukewarm response compared to its predecessor when it builds upon everything that came before it. the levels are more varied, there's more going on in the narrative to draw you in, and the music is to die for. everyone and their dog complains about "big open areas with too many gunners", but i only found that to be an issue in the soldier's levels (dear god getting A+ on the soldier's levels was always An Ordeal Of The Day). i think this game is worth your time if you liked hotline miami 1, because there's so much more going on under the hood here, both from a narrative and gameplay perspective.

Look past the AI sometimes being too smarter than you when you don't know the map and you'll realize that this is a great example of a more ambitious sequel landing amazingly well. The new characters are very charming and fun as hell to play, the story is expanded and fleshed out perfectly, and the soundtrack blows the first game's out of the water. Le Perv playing during Richter's escape is the high point of the whole series

Musica boa, gameplay visceral e um visual muito próprio. Um ótimo masocore.

Overstays it's welcome big time.

I wish they didn't trade away the subtlety to copy Spec Ops: The Line

Coges todo lo que hace Hotline Miami 1 divertidísimo pero le pones un diseño de niveles horrible y te cargas el juego.

pretty forgettable sequel but still a fun game

Great music, while it loses the sort of arcade-y feeling of the first game and takes a heavy focus on the story, it is still very much enjoyable. I will never forget losing my shit over the hard mode.

I've thought about this game every day since I've finished it.

My favorite game. Might be my favorite game of all time until Miami Horror comes out.

Not as good as the original, but brings a lot of unique elements to the table. Really miss being able to swap masks.

In the first game when you died it was probably your fault. In this one, it's the level design.

okay so design wise the game is a bit of a downgrade from the first, there's too many instances where you're going through the level the first time and you get blasted in the face by a dude through a window and you die and he was like the 87th guy out of like a hundred enemies and it's annoying like I get it BUT

In defense of Hotline Miami 2. The art is upgraded and the portraits on characters and the pixel art in general look better than ever. The OST is more than doubled in size since the first game, with every level now having a unique track associated to it and the expected quality of a hotline miami soundtrack still holds true in 2 (the main title theme and the abyss level theme being a few favs). Also, the universe of Hotline Miami gets expanded in 2 with a continuation of the story after the first game, showing the effects that Jacket's actions in the first game had on the world through a decently sized playable cast of characters who all have their own stories and motivations weaved into this Tarrantino-esque narrative. As someone who was surprisingly engaged in what little the first game told of the world story wise, I was eating well with the narrative of the second game and found it to be pretty pleasing. The hotline miami universe is pretty cool!

And I'll go as far as even spinning positively about the level design! Like I said it sucks when you're going through the game the first time because you're approaching the game a lot slower and treating it more like a puzzle game but genuinely, going through the game a second time with the layouts of the level more familiarised in my mind, lead to me having a really good time playing 2. Endurance runs start turning into skillful mowing downs of hordes and the satisfaction of beating a large level + the click of the music finally matching the gameplay style was pretty gratifying.

All in all, the game definitely has flaws but there's plenty of stuff put into this sequel that makes it a worthy successor to the original.

this is what it feels like to be near-sighted

It was an okay game, in some ways better than the first, but goddamn it drags on. First game took me 5 hours to beat, this one 15. Also I noticed the game is much buggier than the first one, with enemies very easily getting stuck on doors, and walking in place, which I don't know why because the game looks and plays exactly as the first, only with what felt like 30 different characters that do pretty much the same and with forgettable music.

This is without exaggeration the worst game I've ever played. It's pompous, masturbatory, and pretentious, while having absolutely nothing of substance to say whatsoever. It is a trash game that has completely cratered my opinion of the people who made it. It's not even fun to play, they ruined their own really solid game design. Fuck this game.

While some find the level design to be a step back from 1, I disagree, the frustration it can add certainly creates tension, but in a way that benefits the games story and themes tenfold.
The story is both deeply layered, interesting, and proves its point in such a beautiful manner.
The Soundtrack is possibly one of the best in gaming, and the muddy grungy graphical style helps sell this bleak world incredibly.
One of, if not my favorite game of all time, certainly one of the most influential pieces of art I have experienced in my life.

i really really wanted to like it but the awful level design is really apparent and i did not care for the story

make a game inferior in every way to the first? dont mind if i do!

A much better story, soundtrack and visuals. The combo counter and S rank are a nice touch.
However the gameplay is honestly worse in this sequel. Enemies can shoot you from across the map in these very open areas and there is less variety in how you can successfully approach a situation. A lot of the time you will be peaking from cover in order to bait enemies over to you. Situations like these make levels such as "Dead Hard" an absolute nightmare. The lack of masks also reduce the variety in how you can approach a level. All that said, there can still be fun moments in this game and the story is really good once you unpack it all.

This game loses a LOT of the charm of first game. a LOT of it. Stupid combat changes, locking you into specific playstyles.

It's also banned in Australia because of the intense sexual violence in the first minute of the game. And you know what?! Fair fucking call. It's gross and unnecessary.

Dennaton closes the series with an explosive and more focused sequel. Multiple characters and stories that join together at the end, where they grab you by the throat and force you to watch.
Maybe dying actually isn't as bad as it seems.

good music and story, levels are awfully designed with a few exceptions.

Su problema recae en la expansión de sus escenarios que no permiten aprovechar del todo las nuevas mecánicas implementadas, pero aún con este problema mantiene ciertas virtudes del primero y una OST genial que lo hacen una experiencia lo suficientemente agradable.

im not very good at this game which is weird bc im very good at galaga
