Weird game to rate because I hate how slowed down the engine is compared to Melee, and tripping is complete and utter nonsense. But on the flip side, this game gave me my first Smash main (Lucas), it had a rocking campaign, a great rollout with that Smash website trickling down updates daily, and it gave me the dream; Mario vs. Sonic. On top of that, thanks to mods, it gave us Brawl +/- and Project M.
I think its actually my 2nd favorite Smash game, all things considered.

competitively speaking I'm sure it sucks with its balance issues and the tripping but I have far too much nostalgia for this game to give it a fair rating on that basis
getting this game when I was 10 was a gateway into many things that I probably wouldn't otherwise have gotten into (like EarthBound)

I loved this game so much growing up, me and my friends played it every single weekend for hours on end and had so much fun. So of course I had the great idea of playing it with my friend a decade after the game's release just to see how it was. Game feels like trash to play and we only lasted about 3 matches before turning it off and deciding to never play it again. Subspace Emissary was cool as hell though and it's sad we'll never get something like that again.
Definitely has my favorite level designer out of all the games in the series, in spite of some of the prop objects not being very useful overall and taking up way too much space on the map. SSBU and SSBM might be better, but I love building levels so very much and probably made a couple hundred in this game. Also, Subspace Emissary was great.
Pros -- Almost everything.
Cons -- Occasional slipping, people acting like they're the most hardcore gamers ever while blaming their shortcomings on slipping.

This is the Smash game I played the most through my life, with a friend. It was a very good time everytime we played it. Of course, it is a little flawed, and was replaced by the better Smash for Wii U and later Ultimate, but it was a blast when it was released. Back then, we didn't even care that much about tripping and the slower side of the game.
