Mechanically interesting. Hits its stride in the later parts when it actually expects the player to use all of their movement tools. Unfortunately it struggles to figure out its identity outside of being a Ninja Gaiden tribute/spiritual sequel. Mostly fills the gaps with sarcasm, which I found off-putting.

I have pretty much the same take as everybody else on this game; the metroidvania stuff sucks, everything else about this is near perfection. Were it not for the metroidvania stuff this would be an easy 9 or maybe even a 10 for me.

The writing also rides a very thin line between amusingly self aware and obnoxious. I mostly found it pretty charming, but the meta jokes and 4th wall breaks did occasionally make me roll my eyes.

Those things aside, this is about as good as action platformers get. The level design is top-notch, the platforming mechanics feel great, the combat is simple and satisfying, the bosses are amazing and only get better as the game goes on, and the soundtrack is to die for. Also the pixel art and sprite work is wonderful. Easy recommendation from me, looking forward to what this team does next.

Not only is it a bad game, it has Jordan Peterson propaganda!

This challenging action platformer is a bit frustrating but generally good fun. Until the game says "FUCK THIS" and becomes a metroidvania halfway through for no good reason.

A terrific throwback platformer that surprise! becomes a kinda-terrible Metroidvania in the back half. The reveal is real cool, but...mixing linear and non-linear platformers sure doesn't seem like a good idea.

horrible dialogue, inconsequential level design, copy pasted enemies, forgettable bosses... wait this is just the first half

great combat and movement abilities, but loses a lot of its charm once it becomes a metroidvania

Very engaging. I look forward to more from these developers.

A Wonderful blend of 2D PLatformer and Metroidvania

A wonderful mix of an old style platformer (like Gaiden) and a metroidvania with great music and design.

Simple and fun story and good gameplay mechanics. Honorable mention to OST.

Super fun time. Some frustrating level design at points and mechanics that don’t always mesh together, but just a jam all the way through. Strongly recommend

It's good if a little boring at times. I love the platforming sections, and I honestly don't mind the metroidvania parts except for the fact that the warp points are usually too far away from your main objective. It's not that big of a deal though, I just found a lot of it to be unremarkable

A creative, fun retro platformer, but a lackluster and repetitive Metroidvania with some great ideas. The second half doesn't ruin the game but it definitely hinders it, which sucks because that's when the coolest ideas are introduced.

The Messenger is the most masterfully crafted throwback platformer-action I've ever played. If I was Yoda, I could still count all of my gripes with the game on one hand. There are so many cool moments, so many fantastic twists and turns, that playing this game blind is the absolute best way to experience it. Completed to 100% on single playthrough.

Personal Accolades - Golden Haro GOTY 2k18

Actually not totaly bad game but... After the twist, It became kinda too metroid for me to handle, maybe with some kind of walkthrough, but then - why so much of platformer moments? I seriously dont know what to say

Ninja gaiden pero fácil, lo debo reinstalar gracias a mi pc

if this game just wanted to coast on the linear Ninja Gaiden aspect, then it couldve gotten away with being pretty alright. but half this game being godawful backtracking paired with obnoxious music and horrible writing makes this game hard to recommend

Ya lo habia jugado anteriormente, pero nunca completado al 100%. Una joyita solo para los más fuertes y hábiles.

This game would have been an easy 4/5 if didn't shit on me and make it into a Metroidvania

Why is every indie platformer needs to be a Metroidvania

There's actually a lot that puts me off this game and the game turning into a metroidvania is not interesting but it just plays so GOD DAMN WELL.

Interesting shopkeeper and it has a very nice mood.

5 stars i do not care 5 fucking stars this is the most godlike game i have played in the entirety of my near 18 years of living, god tier soundtrack, god tier gameplay, god tier characters, god tier dialogue, god tier story, all of it is simply perfect and i could not recommend a better game to anyone on the planet

"Please don't touch the cabinet..."
OST and game mechanics are great, the bosses are a bit easy... I like IT!
Road to perfection game!
