for gameplay the series doesn't get better and for story the series doesn't get worse

MGSV featuring a protagonist that suffers from Phantom Pain because of a lost limb which is a reference to the fact that it’s fans suffer from the Phantom Pain of missing their entire brain

Never got excited for a game ever again until Elden Ring.
Fuck this game.

they can chop your arm off, fire you from konami, be unfinished and yet you're still better than valorant

one of the best stealth games ever made

i don't like kojima, and i don't like metal gear, so i love this game

would be great if quiet didn’t have a disease where she had to be half naked all the time

Gameplay was fuckin phenomenal, complete dopamine farm at its best. The story was awkwardly paced and didn't end in a satisfying way. Despite that, still a 4 1/2 at its best

when MGS:V does something right, it succeeds to the greatest extent it can; when it doesnt it makes me think kojima is a bit of a hack. what the previous entries did in narrative is what phantom pain does in gameplay. Easily my favorite fast-paced stealth game loop, but at what cost?

when the characters shine in this title, im not sure if its cause im latched onto the past entries like a pup sucking from a teat or if its genuinely good. The villains in this game are the worst the series has ever been, most of the interactions feel somewhat forced (whenever eli showed up i was just like.. ok.). you know its fucked up whenever i would rather listen to kaz and code talker chat it up about hamburgers rather than the actual important conversations.

credit where credit is due, i think sahelanthropus is one of my favorite metal gears in the franchise.. and i really love venom snakes design (drooling over the fatigues) alongside psycho mantis being really fucking awesome when hes not a literal macguffin.

chapter 2 is where the cracks that have been there all along came to the forefront, the cutscenes in this chapter are actually really fucking good but to access them you need to do a bunch of arbitrary bullshit i thought that kojima learned better since peace walker.

to make a metal gear game story that has no replay value is a serious feat that i didn't consider possible until this game. but hey atleast they sure got the modernized ridiculously addicting gameplay loop!! blegh [im not gonna touch upon the comphet doomed yuri because it hurts too much but thank you kojima]

Would've been so great if it was finished. I find the story to be solid but the direction they went about some of it to be pretty dumb. XOF is the main faction we fight against yet we only directly fight them in one mission? I don't know if there was some hidden meaning behind why they decided to do that and I wasn't complaining because the gameplay was fun throughout, but the fact that most of our time was spent doing filler and side stuff was pretty disappointing. I also found almost every boss fight in this game to be trash. The Skulls were just a nuisance that show up to just fuck your day, and not in a good way. Other than these issues, I found Chapter 1 to be pretty engaging and the overall freedom this game give you to tackle encounters however you want to be genuinely impressive. The adaptive AI and the fact that the game basically plays like a mil-sim make this game stand out. I also didn't totally mind listening to the tapes to understand the lore, as the game kinda tells you to at least listen to the yellow ones to get a gist of what's going on. I did feel like a couple tapes here and there about Code Talker and Zero should've been yellow too, as they do add some much needed context. I also don't think there should've been that many required tapes to listen to, as some of them could've easily been cutscenes. Overall, I didn't have too much to complain about with Chapter 1 and found my time to still be engaging despite its flaws. I loved the darker tone they established with this one since Ground Zeroes and how that prologue set the stage for what goes down in this one. I also found Skull Face to be a pretty competent villain despite his lack of screentime, and the final two missions in Chapter 1 left a strong impression on me.

And then Chapter 2 happens. This part of the game is actually awful. All the story stuff that goes down is cool and there are a few highlights here and there. However, the game expects you to know when and how to unlock and trigger certain chapters, and if you don't, THE MISSIONS WON'T FUCKING LOAD INTO YOUR iDROID. This might've been because of the unfinished state it was released, but it is the way it is nonetheless, which is still ridiculous. I also thought that having you replay old missions with modifiers was really lazy. Sure, some of them were cool, letting you experience the same mission in a new way. But making us replay through some of the worst missions in the game in Extreme or Total Stealth just made the whole experience much more tedious. Not to mention, the ending fucking sucks. The final mission consists of you replaying the first mission ALL OVER AGAIN, WITH NO CHANGES, FOR NO REASON. THEY COULD'VE JUST SHOWED US THE CUTSCENES AFTER TRIGGERING THE MISSION BUT NOPE, YOU GOTTA REPLAY (more like rewatch with how many cutscenes it was) THE FIRST HOUR OF THE GAME. AND THE WORST PART?! THE GAME DOESN'T EVEN HAVE AN ENDING. The Eli thing never gets a conclusion and the game ends after showing you a twist that was clearly leading into a third act that doesn't exist. The Truth tapes do wrap up a lot of loose ends that were unexplained and were pretty interesting to listen to, but the main plot went fucking nowhere. Listening to the Truth tapes make a lot of events more impactful in retrospect and help strengthen the overall story but the lack of a third act still makes the narrative falter. It's truly a shame that it was never completed.

Overall, I should rank it lower but I still had a fun enough time with it. Definitely some of the best action-stealth gameplay you can find in the industry, even today.

The end parts are gooch but the middle and beginning are amazing

Nearly a decade after its release, Metal Gear Solid V is a frustrating game to talk about. I ended up loving it but calling it a fucking MESS of a game would be an understatement. Everything from the gameplay to the story has issues and really stands as a testament to how unfinished it is.

Gameplay wise and Phantom Pain is the best in the series no questions asked. Featuring every improvement from MGS4 with the things taken away from Peace Walker gives the absolute best movement in the franchise, alongside a great sandbox approach that gives you so many options when approaching missions. That's not to say that MGSV is easy, as the difficulty has also kept pace with the most unforgiving alert times in the series and guards being able to switch things up (like using NVG or being more armored). Alongside that is the expanded Mother Base system, giving you lots of options in comparison to Peace Walker that further heightens what you can do. As for wholly unique things the Buddy System rules, with each companion being really fun to utilize (though Quiet is objectively the best as she can mark and take down enemies pretty quickly). The mission based structure returns from Peace Walker and feels so much better, with the multitudinous of optional things in each giving V some of the strongest replay ability in the series. On a more minor note the soundtrack is also pretty varied, with lots of great original tracks (Sins Of The Father) and good licensed stuff that fits the setting well.

Before talking about the BIG issues with MGSV I'd like to discuss some of its cracks. While the open approach to missions is fantastic the open world itself is very....dull. The amount of things to do in both sections essentially boils down to either taking out outposts (which is useless because the missions restart things) or doing the hundreds of side ops (that quickly become repetitive and repeat themselves). It wouldn't be so bad but so much time is spent in the open world that eventually I just used the helicopter travel to make navigating through it easier. The Mother Base system is great but all the TIMERS that are involved makes the experience feel like a mobile game at times, with the game even including micros transactions because Konami hates you as a player. The biggest gameplay sin however would have to be how lacking the game is with boss fights, as only around FOUR exist in the entire game. In a series with some of the best boss fights ever, its incredibly disappointing that this entry didn't continue this trend.

*STORY SPOILERS*

Perhaps the most infamous thing about MGSV would be its utterly abysmal story, and I don't disagree with this statement as Phantom Pain has one of the worst narratives I've seen in an open world game. Before tearing into it though I do have some nice things to say. While it is sad that David Hayter got the boot I did like Kiefer Sutherlands potrayal as Venom, with his deeper voice working well with the tone Phantom Pain was going for. In fact most of MGSVs performances are fantastic, with the later tapes having some great moments that outshine most of what is seen in game (the truth tapes are some of my favorites). While the tone never gets to the true dark and depressing atmosphere that GZ promised it does come close, with sections like the Prologue and especially Mission 43 being pretty brutal.

Thats about it for positives though as after that you're left with a game that SCREAMS unfinished. The pacing is some of the worst I've seen, with tons of missions that amount to crumbs of story happening. The Afghanistan section is really bad with this, as only three important things actually happen in the 13 missions (getting Kaz back, meeting Skullface and rescuing Huey). Africa is a bit better in this regard but you're still going to be left wanting at the end of Chapter 1. Skullface is the absolute worst villian in all of the MGS games, being basically non-existent for most of the game until finally dying in the first real mission he shows up in (it is a pretty brutal end off). While the tapes do flesh him out (the ones with him talking to Code Talker are pretty fucked up) he still lacks so much of what made the other villains so memorable and the attempts to make him important just come off as utterly forced (he was part of the MGS3 team I guess). It doesn't get much better with everyone else, as characters like the Man On Fire and Third Child are also pretty underutilized before being thrown away in the second chapter (Man On Fire gets finished off in a FUCKING SIDE OP). Eli has the most potential but ends up being the worst, with him being another shameless bit of fanservice who is also the biggest victim of the game unfinished state, as his entire arc just ends with no real conclusion (except the cut mission 51 which is still pretty whatever). Chapter 2 all around is just a mess, with story events happening after doing random shit without much focus (this includes actual good scenes like the Quarantine and Huey trial). The ending in particular is really strange, as it gets no real fanfare and requires playing through the prologue except its now a different mission (except not really WHY KOJIMA). As for what I think its certainly an interesting ending that plugs up a plothole of MG1 but nonetheless doesn't add much to the bigger picture of the Metal Gear Universe.

*STORY SPOILERS END*

Despite everything I can't deny that MGSV is a fun game to play and one that I would still recommend despite its blemishes. While the story is still bad the gameplay never got tiring and I can see myself coming back to fuck around and complete side content. It's undeniably one of the weaker Metal Gear games, but still a blast from beginning to end.

8/10

Still a lot of fun but the story is so clearly a downgrade from the rest of the series. There's a lot of interesting ideas pointed at but the protagonist being such a non-entity (which could have been great) brings it all down. What's left feels like a weaker version of Peace Walker.

One of the only games I'd be willing to give five stars to without being sure if I'll ever finish it. The game systems in this are soooo good, there are tons of approaches to anything and you can get quite creative. Kind of wish it had less Hideo-isms and had less weird shit going on, but the gameplay is just that good.

thinking about the game like
WOOOOOOOOOOAHOOOOOO
actually playing the unfinished open world stealth game with real world timed crafting and base mechanics like
OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

happy pride month to kaz and venom snake

Really fun game, but I just could stick with it.

Swag

Deceptive marketing causes me to be bitter about the story even now. The open worlds themselves are kinda barren, but outside of that it is probably the best stealth/third person shooter I have ever played.

Okay last entry in the Metal Gear Survive doesn't exist

queria muito gostar desse jogo porem detesto genero de stealth 😓

"Boss, you killed a child?! ... Amazing, mission complete! That right there is why you're the best, Boss! The one and only!"

Don't care what anyone says, this is great.

I'll take video games that unironically got me into Hall & Oates for 500, Alex.

One of the best games ever made, regardless of it's level of completion.

Everything is great about this game. I am not even a fan of stealth games but this game makes stealth extremely fun (as expected from a metal gear game). Its my first metal gear game and I have a lot of optimism for the other games in the series that I plan to play after I complete this one. It is literally a great game in terms of everything, I can't think of any flaws at all.
