It's kind of hard to fully appreciate it nowadays (except for me; I always have a perfect appreciation for the arts), but it still remains a cool and fun VN.
Doesn't get as fucking insanely good as some of the biggest highs in the rest of the series, but it also doesn't explode itself over how convoluted it is like the rest of the series too.
This happened to my buddy Eric.

The absolute state of Raidouheads when this game's soundtrack is like five seconds from becoming Persona 4's OST.
Raidou is a slick motherfucker and the setting and artstyle is great, but the gameplay is quaint for like two hours and then it gets really, really annoying for the rest of the playtime. If it was just a mystery-solving game with no combat it would be an alltimer.

Vanillaware, a well-regarded studio, releasing 13 Sentinels is interesting because of how it contrasts their previous releases. Whereas most of their games have been fantasy, 13 Sentinels is sci-fi; the game is more of a VN + strategy game instead of a beat 'em up or a 'pure' strategy game; and so on and so forth.
The contrast becomes even more interesting when 13 Sentinels actually has a fascinating plot from beginning to end, compared to Vanillaware's other storylines which always fall under ''it's neat, I guess''.
The most impressive part, by far, though, is how after their previous most high-profile game Dragon's Crown, where there is such an abundance of fat tits and asses that I start to get used to it and no longer care about it, Vanillaware proves how truly gifted they are at their craft when in 13 Sentinels, they keep their cards close to their giant anime chest and only show the fat tits I wanna see when it really matters. As such, each display of hand-crafted tits become all the more shocking. Masterful.

Despite being held up as an artistic achievement, it limits itself by tapping into inspiration from American culture without expanding on the American philosophy - look no further than the lack of thematic connection between the main character's design and it's chief inspiration, the classic band Red Hot Chili Peppers; like everything else in the game, it's only skin deep.

Despite it being stylish and in vogue to mock Phil Fish for his anti-Japanese games views way back when, he was just doing what any hipster unconsciously does; tap into the mainstream undercurrent where everyone thought Japanese games were lame, except for mario which was the example of a good, pure Japanese game. In this way, he was basically just a more confident poster than most people espousing the virtues of video games back then and now. His game is garbage though and it's not clever.
