Steam Next Fest Winter 2024 ranked by enjoyment

This season wasn't as exciting as the last for me, but everything I stumbled upon was still neat in some ways. If something looks interesting to you should definitely check it out.

1: Will totally be playing
2-12: Will be paying close attention
Everything else: Will be admiring from a far

My god, games can really look this incredible now. Very much enjoyed the initial worldbuilding and intrigued where this one is gonna go. Why is the demo 50 gigabytes 😭

2

Definitely an adventure of in the cinematic third-person style of the current year, but the Imperial Russian backdrop? Exploration of a on Orthodox Christian mindset? That's something you don't see often. Helps that it looks great and performances (in Russian) are pretty good. Will be keeping a close look.
I really enjoy the new wave of deduce'em'all games and this one is so delightful! Only two little vignettes in the demo, but it was enough to setup the tone (humorous but empathetic) and stakes (small). Just hit me in the right spot, will be looking forward to this one.
Great presentation with tight controls, and is this meowsynth I hear? Absolutely 🥹 vibes

A bullet hell where you defeat enemies by slamming yourself onto them, and then you can have a little dance number! Very much 2000s doujin, I like it.
Roguelike brought it's logical conclusion — a poker game where along the run you're given tools to manipulate your deck and accompanying statistics to keep up with escalating payouts requirements. I'm a spontaneous gambler so I might hop on this if I get an itch.
You've got rocket jumps? And wallrunning? You what, trying to make the best speedrunning game out there?
Ayo this is fun?? Only one level in the demo but I replayed it three times for better score. Why do indies make better controlling 3D Sonic games than Sega.
"Teleporting retains momentum" is the key to my heart.
This is a decent twinstick bullet hell with roguelike structure! Not a lot of fluff, you quickly sweep thorugh rooms and get slightly stronger which is probably the right way to go. I'm very weak to Touhou and they tease a whole lot of characters so I'll probably check the full version out.
Wouldn't lie, this is the first indie skater that GETS Tony Hawk controls (which is apparently because they have a THUG developer on board). And I think roguelike structure is something I could enjoy as a game where you'd come back for new skating tasks. But technically the demo is a mess: hitches, stutters, crashes. I'll try the full version in hope they fix it but can't really recommend it right now unless you really like Tony Hawk.
Both an obligatory Inti Creates and another game where you play as a cat in the afterlife? Surprisingly high concept for the studio, as with every death you lose a bit of your catness but get new abilities that make the game easier, which also influences story routes. Felt a bit clunky to me, but if I'll see good reviews I'll mess with it more.
Very captivating demo initially, with neat intriguing introducton of the exclusion zone setting, great sense of physicality involving car controls and its various maintenance quirks. Then it just kinda devolves into scrapper looter trash collector? There's absolutely an audience for this but I'm not in the mood.
Public domain might be the best thing that happened to art
Burrowing sections of Ori 2 but made into an entire game. Didn't grab me as much as I hoped but I really like how the drill is the only way to interact with the world.
Patchouli's Adventure In Doll's House: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2299750/
• Cool escape room game made in an RPG maker with 2hu characters.
•❓🏳️‍🌈
Maybe sudaheads can make cool games after all

Classic of Next Fest: A metroidvania with ridiculously good presentation. A bit clunky for me though, but I enjoy the idea of nutrition-based progression (it's just like real life)
I kinda dig what they're going for, but the visual language is so confusing and combat animations have so little heft it's really hard to get a good feel of it.

The look of this one is awesome – it's Cuphead for digital cartoons of 2010s. Not feeling basically everything else.
Outer Wilds for your dad
Just kind of a basic RTS with Touhou skin? Not many exciting things here other than the fact that you can left click on Reimu and order fairies to gather sake.
Car controls well and it looks nice but there's nothing too interesting about it otherwise? It's a rally racer, it's fine
I thought I'll avoid unreal demos with shader stutter but here come bears in space. It's a shooter with a 'tude. It's fine. The best thing I can say about the humor is that it wasn't irritating.
Respect the effort but there's something to say about going too hard on a bit

>looking for a shop management game
>ask the indie developer if their game moonlighter or recettear
>pull out illustrated diagram explaining what is recettear and what is moonlighter
>they laugh and say "its a good game sir"
>play the demo
>it's moonlighter
A Megaman X homage made with a lot of effort, but the immediate hook is unclear to me. Not sure why I should bother with this when I still have got Gravity Circuit to play?
Pretty, but I don't think 100% Orange Juice needed long ass animations for every single action
Don't want to punch down what's clearly a creation by an amateur aspiring developer but this needs more time in the oven.

Didn't dig Toree. Weirdly, I thought it lacked a drift of sorts. Try Roman Sands for an actual cool game demo by a Sudahead, though I have to admit I couldn't fix the elevator last night, maybe it was just too late at night.

@Lehuan Roman Sands looks neat but I think I'm out of fuel playing all new games for now, gonna spend the rest of the month in comfortability of Tekken and Yakuza

You think you can Cakewalkaway from this one, huh?

I think they should just turn every profession into a duck, including all those ___Simulator games. Garbage Duck Simulator 2025.
