When a touhou fangame is better than half the megaman x series

Basically Kirby Dream Land but with animal friends. Slightly better but not much better. Level design was pretty bad in a few levels in the last world. The one that comes to mind is where you just have to guess which of three paths to take several times in a row and if you guess wrong it’s an auto death. It is an old game though and they were still trying to figure things out and work out kinks. All in all I don’t have much to say about it other than it was an average game.

Considering this was a Nes game, and Kirby's first game with copy abilities, I was expecting there to be only a few basic ones, so I was pleasantly surprised to see such cool ideas like tornado, ufo and wheel already here.
Bosses are really fun, and the soundtrack is great.

Unfortunately the game has performance issues. Some of the worst slowdown I've ever seen that affects pretty much every level. And there's an annoying delay after pretty much every button press, sometimes it's small, but for actions likes sucking, or exhaling air while flying, it feels like you lose control of Kirby for way too long, often leading to unavoidable hits or falling into pits.

It doesn't matter how good of an idea the game is, if it runs like shit, it's not fun to play. Luckily there's other ways to play this game, including a remake on GBA.

As a fan of the Igavania format, I felt very disappointed and bored by this game’s predecessor, Dawn of Sorrow. It was a game that truly didn’t improve upon Aria’s core strengths alongside all of its new inclusions being implemented with the grace of an elephant in a china shop. DoS also sorta went to prove that Iga had pretty much perfected the standard, singular castle metroidvania format in Aria of Sorrow. So where do you go after that?
Portrait of Ruin is the answer to this question. PoR puts a new spin on the series by cutting down the density of the titular castle to add in the painting worlds, little mini stages with plenty of both visual and level design variety. While much more linear as a result, I didn’t mind it too much because it felt refreshing and the levels themselves were still really, really fun. Do I still prefer the bigger and denser castle over this? Definitely. But I can’t devalue how well this was done. The only part about the levels I didn’t like was the repeated levels towards the end, it’s like the reverse castle in terms of shitty enemy placement and not really doing anything interesting.
We also get another new innovation with the partner system, becoming the partner idea from Castlevania III but taken to a new extreme. Now there’s only Jonathan and Charlotte to play as, but you can now call assists like it’s a Marvel vs Capcom game or something alongside huge magical screen nukes that take up a bunch of MP. Towards the beginning of the game I was more into just playing as Jonathan because his style fits me more, but Charlotte gets some really powerful spells that make her no slouch in the combat department.
The story isn’t half bad either. Jonathan’s arc is very much the tropey anime coming of age kind of thing but I still like both him and Charlotte a lot as a duo. The ties to Castlevania Bloodlines of all things was an odd sequel choice but it’s pretty neat. Definitely a step up from Dawn’s extremely plot-hole ridden and snoozefest of a story.
The presentation is solid. The character sprites are smooth and colorful, with plenty of stage themes to occupy the player. It still has those lame anime styled portraits like Dawn of Sorrow but actually somehow worse, but they aren’t necessarily bad. It’s just uninteresting compared to Ayami Kojima’s absolutely masterful works.
Overall, Portrait of Ruin is a very, very solid Castlevania game. I never see anybody talk about this one, which is a huge shame! I think more people should play it. Make that DS collection happen already Konami. In short, this is the vastly superior platformer game about jumping into paintings and I will die on this hill. Castlevania freakin’ rules.

What a disaster. What everyone says is true, this game was the initial cause of AlphaDream's downfall. I have no idea they made this game the way that they did, but it's terrible regardless. The combat is...relatively unchanged from Dream Team. Paper Mario has some fun to use special moves but is otherwise uninspired. The characters in this entire game are all either generic mainline Mario enemies or Toads. Aside from Paper Peach, Paper Kamek, Paper Bowser, Tower Power Pokey (if you can even count that abomination) and a cameo from Paper Luigi, absolutely no unique characters from the Paper Mario series appear. Not to mention that, the story is just another Bowser captures Peach plot. Somehow, the generic formula of NSMB leaked into this game and even destroyed the gameplay. Puzzles are boring (most of them are quite literally waves of enemies) and the only unique factors of this game, the Toad minigames and Papercraft battles, are super mediocre. Toad minigames are repeated WAY too much and the Papercraft battles, while being the best aspect of this game, control terribly and end up occurring too much to be considered a breath of fresh air. Just one of the biggest disasters the Mario series has ever had, almost if not AS big as Sticker Star's failure. If you're playing through the Mario & Luigi series for the first time, you can skip this one (or really just end with Dream Team).

This is one of those games I wish I could say I enjoyed more than I did. In terms of raw gameplay, Paper Jam is actually a lot of fun. It introduces new overworld abilities like the (extremely welcome) run button, it simplifies some old abilities like the drill and it also adds new battle mechanics like Battle Cards. At its core, this game is actually really good...

... However, all its good qualities are completely ruined by a ridiculous amount of filler minigames that destroy the pace of the game. Be it collecting Toads, chasing Nabbit or those weird Papercraft battles, the game will constantly interrupt the fun parts with annoying minigames. This even translates to battles themselves, where enemies will often have pretty long attacks that make turns last way more than they should.

Overall, this ends up as a pretty disappointing game. It had a lot of potential but it only manages to get a "meh" from me... and I didn't even mention the wasted potential of the crossover.

this is the first castlevania i have ever played and also the first snes game i felt compelled to finish.
It has great 2d action game play where you have to flick your whip in 8 directions and use slow paced platforming to get around the levels. There are also special items which are not completely useless which some people like to tell you.

The atmosphere is amazing and the soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard! Amazing game, holds up really well
