game franchises where a sequel was remade before the original
what started as a cynical observation about bloober teams sh2 has made me curious as to how many there are of these. strictly counting remakes, not remasters or enhanced ports.
lmk in the comments if i missed any (almost certainly is did)

Oh and Mario 64 on the DS
metal gear solid (snake eater)
@ZapRowsdower 64 3D i was on the fence about, 64's basically already a reimagining of the first one but I could go either way. The first zelda and mario got remakes long before either of those tho (super mario all stars, BS Zelda)
@zan3tr i feel theres a pretty clear line of difference between metal gear and MGS, even tho theyre the same story i'd count them as separate series (same reason nier isnt on here even tho its kinda sorta a sequel to drakengard)

Metal Gear would definitely count but it would be Twin Snakes first.
@GutterTrash It is your list, but I would still argue that the first two Metal Gear games are still very much tied into the MGS games as MGS1 is a direct sequel to MG2 what with characters like "Master Miller" and Grey Fox returning. Not to mention how much of MGS5 is setup to elaborate on the events of Metal Gear 1. Its not like Drakengard and Nier which are just loosely tied.
I meant like the original snake eater vs metal gear solid delta my bad
Final Fantasy 7 Remake. I feel like that can be easily classified as a full on remake, while all the other games just basic got remasters and ports. I was also gona say Shadow of the Colossus aswell, but Im on the fence about that.
@NovaNiles FFIII and IV both got remakes on the DS so how would everything work
@The_Gaming_Dog12 Oh yeah I kind of forgot about those DS versions. But arent they just graphical upgrades and mechanicaly almost 1:1 with the originals ? Honest question, cause its been a hot minute since I playd those versions.
@NovaNiles I'm sure it is mainly just visual and quality of life, but it was fully remade and if TTYD is on this list, I think they count.
I would 100% consider the first FF remake to be ff origins on the ps1
@The_Gaming_Dog12 Ok with TTYD you got a good point, cant really argue that
@GutterTrash here is some stuff to consider:
Ace combat 2 - Ace combat assault horizon legacy
Sid meier’s colonization - Civilization IV colonization
Dragon quest III - 1996 remake
Famicom detective club the girl who stands behind - 1998 SNES remake
Jagged alliance 2 - Jagged alliance back in cation
Lufia II rise of the sinistrals - Lufia curse of the sinistrals
Wonder boy III the dragon’s trap - Wonder boy the dragon’s trap
Shining force - Shining force resurrection of the dark dragon
Tactics ogre let us cling together - 2011 remake

@The_Gaming_Dog12 DQ1 and wonder boy got remakes before those, and i'd say colonization is more of a spinoff than a civ game, but the rest of those are real good calls
Maybe the Sonic franchise? If you don't count Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic CD and Sonic Colors were remade before the original games.
Oh, and maybe Star Fox 64 (it got a 3DS remake)
Okay just one more: Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz
Does Persona 3 Reload count?
Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp?
Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp?
Not counting Shattered Memories?
@Mapache the first Persona game got remade for the PSP though.
Final Fantasy VI.
IMO FFVI aged better than FF VII, so they were right at doing it. But i would love see FFVI in modern days

Grandia II
Dang good research brother.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled perhaps? I see the original TMNT arcade game got ports but I couldn't find a remake like Turtles in Time received

how do you feel about Kirby 1 having a remake inside Kirby Superstar? would that not count because it's kinda abridged and inside another game? not trying to correct or anything, actually curious what you think about it!
@Mewtsukki fully forgot that was a part of superstar, 100% counts as a remake in my book so nightmare in dreamlands gettin booted
@C_F i wouldnt count it as a full on remake, since it goes in a very obviously different direction than the original and hardly serves (or intends to serve) as a substitute for the original, as opposed to what i think of when it comes to a video game remake
