Recently Iโve become infatuated with the catalogue and timeline of Valveโs works, as someone who has arrived to the PC scene only recently, Iโve picked up their backlog of titles and have come to understand their legacy. Wherever thatโs their genre making Half-Life that set forth what an immersive story should be, or the incredible case of Portal, and what I could argue as the definitive puzzle game. Even their more โlesser frontlineโ games such as Day of Defeat and older Counter Strikeโs are fascinating enough where I feel intrigued to explore and delve in more. The success could be attributed to many things, like the Source engine being so perfect for the time as it was, or Valveโs near godlike worship in most online communities. Over the past few weeks however, one of these has stuck out to me as a work I would have never expected to love so much.

Where can you really start with Team Fortress 2? A flagship of the Orange Box quickly becoming one of the longest supported games throughout itโs life, before falling into a limbo of uncertainty for itโs prevalent future. As someone new to playing, this was incredibly daunting, but soon enough you get into a rhythm of matches and matches and the outsider feeling isnโt really a problem. To delve into the gameplay, I believe they really nailed it right on the spot. Before the time of Overwatch andPaladins there were nine mercenaries, and wherever that the natural talent of Valve theyโre really loveable. I initially thought these were just blank slates and that internet culture hypes these guys out more than theyโre meant to be, but god dammit they're extravagant personalities really shine out. Scout is loud, often abrasive, Heavy is a sort of stupid yet secretively intellectual character, and the cartoonishly evilness of Medicโs science, to name only three. The reason why TF2 has stuck out so much over the 1.5ish decade course is that these jerk-offs really are individuals, which brings so much personality into the world.

Speaking of individuality, an almost genius idea that was maybe accidentally brought into the game was the customisation of the mercs. The mix-matching of weapons and weighing out the pros and cons gives you your own playstyle and how you play your matches. To name an example, my team was trying to push on Dustbowl, and were struggling to get it out of spawn. I had an idea and used the Eyelander and Charginโ Targe for Demoman and successfully flanked most of the enemy team. Older players will probably roll my eyes and make a comment about subclasses, but I felt rewarded by the game for trying out something slightly unconventional.

โUnconventionalโ suits this game a lot. The more time I spent in this game the more the rabbit hole of gamemode and maps opened up for me. Mann vs Machine, (if you ignore the prevalent toxicity surrounding the games) is one of my favourite PvE modes that could serve as its own game. The uniqueness of mix-matching the weapons and classes comes into fruition here as they bring forward the teamwork and communication side of TF2, and as long as you get great people itโs a lovely time. It gives a very hard to master approach, but I feel as if Iโm learning and improving all the time. All of that is driven by the wondrous prize of an elusive Australium weapon, and although I cannot comment on it as much as I would like to, the market system and trading economy in this game is comprehensive and extensively deep. Community tabs, though a violent cesspool of mediocrity, are majoritively entertaining enough to check out. Itโs interesting to see what the community can do with only the engine and game mechanics; you only need to take a quick look at rocket-jumping maps for how committed TF2โs players are willing to push the gameplay core.

Itsโ cultural status breaks out of this too, as of itsโ 16 year anniversary it has miraculously pulled through the lack of support that Valve has given it. Itโs a shame, as issues like hacking and the rise of bots have troubled the community enough. But somehow, the perseverance and determination of TF2โs players has me in awe. The aspect of wanting to keep your playerbase together whilst managing to uptake the parts of the game that made it so interesting in the first place is maybe one of the reasons why I love this game so much. And I feel like I could go more into this game, but Iโve said enough. Maybe as I reach the high hour marks my thoughts and opinions will grow bitter, Iโll sour and become a TF2 vet, depressingly wandering and reminiscing on a game that once was. Iโll have joined a community of edgy teens, toxic tryhards, and AI bots insta-sniping me from across the map. But Iโll also be in a place of belonging, and acceptance in a weird time of the internet where maybe all I need from a game is to have fun.
For a game I only just know, this feels like home.

Multiplayer and Salmron Run are more refined and polished as well, and with the card mode and other QOL. The story mode is actually fucking incredible this time around (better than Octo Expansion, I said it) I highly suggest you go in blind. With updates and confirmed story DLC (with everyone's favourite lesbians) Nintendo has proven to us once again that they can make fun and exciting IPs.
Nintendo make me your bitch.

Historical events in the real world implies that Mario could've had the choice to kill baby Hitler or stop any other monstrosity and he feels it's more important to give Newton his fucking apple back, better yet why doesn't he also go back and just kill Bowser too. Like yeah you'd never get the present that you wanted and Mario wouldn't have a purpose but he's been getting fucked over by this turtle for nearly 40 years now. Too busy surfing to do anything meaningful in his life or contribute to society in the slightest. 1/10

"Hey guys, remember what we did to all those women? It doesn't matter anymore, we've just made a sequel to our most anticipated game of the last decade? No its not Diablo its Overwatch 2."
"We added 3 new heroes and reworked a few as well as adding maps to give you ultimate Overwatch experience. We've also added a paid battle pass, all the heroes are behind an unlock wall and the skins you could get for free in Overwatch now cost ยฃ16. But hey at least its free to play right?? We're delaying the Story Mode to 2023."
This is probably the biggest sequel dissapointment in history. As someone who played OW for a while (100+ hrs) as well as have friends who are big fans of the game this feels all the while confusing on why they made this. After playing the beta I just enjoyed the overall experience of the first one more and now with all the micro-transactions it has me extremely worried. The fact that the game literally changed itself to OW2 on my Xbox is extremely concerning. This just feels like a reskinned cash grab that a shitty company is trying to convince us that it's good again. If your own fans don't agree with the way you're making this, then who is this for?
but hey the porn is good so yknow
edit: for those who haven't seen my comment, this is me mostly complaining about blizzard's shitty way of treating fans and the game itself, rate the game whatever you want!

According to a quick Google search, Japanese middle school children are between the ages of 12-15. The fucking fact that I took the time to install RPG Maker and this game just to literally play a glorified edgy incel game about a child, a child that does a literal fucking school shooting makes me cringe and sick. No punchline with this review just actual shit material. Fuck shooting glorifiers.

"Master! We're in a tight spot!"
Man, I'm so disappointed. Not in the sense that Killer7 fell short of expectations or that it failed to meet them, that there has never been a game that feels interesting and unique, to which I can't seem to play. Born from the Capcom 5, Killer7 is nothing more than a weird and feverish cult classic born from the spirit of Suda himself. The Kill the Past series, or what I've played so far, is so innovative in itself. Flower, Sun and Rain, for example, unmistakably changed what it meant to be a walking simulator and had the story to tell the message to destroy the burden of your past. The mundane loop and gameplay , though tedious at first, hits slow and the game ends with one of Suda's strongest works in an outstanding series.
And Killer7?
I honestly don't know, I'm having a hard time getting anywhere far in the game. Weird Rail shooter/survival-horror-esque gameplay is probably not my thing. I don't like doing pausing and having to take my shots anxiously, I've always assumed this game to have fast and smoother action. The puzzles, in my opinion, do not match my assumed mood of Killer7. Weird, must-haves of survival horror are known their puzzles, Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil the works..I don't know, maybe I'll go back and try playing this. This is not a review or criticism of itself, in fact you should go install it and at least try it now. Just frustration that I can't seem to enjoy it as much as I wanted to. It sucks, everything surrounding the game is captivating and it tries to draw you in, but god it's a challenge to see this game's wonders. Just sadness, but nothing but respect for this title. Unsurprisingly, one of most bizarre works by Grasshopper and a style, direction and story that can never be replicated again. There will never be anything again like Killer7.
Except Hopper7.
Or Killer8.

Now I see what I've gotta do, Open your heart, and you will see
Heart and soul. What drives our heroes, and our villain to their goal, but also what killed Segaโs Dreamcast and fierce notoriety in the gaming industry. Mentioned in a previous review, Iโve always been curious about the rivalry that the moustached man and the speedy hedgehog had throughout their early lives. Although, throughout my earlier life too, Iโve always favoured Mario. Not my fault as a child I guess, thereโs some kind of wiring in a young kidโs brain that forces you to essentially pick between one or the other. It wasnโt actually until late 2022 and even up to January this year that I picked up and played Sonicโs earlier titles for myself, and I was sorta disappointed? My perception of him was this cool attitude, daredevil speedster that zoomed and wittily ruined the plans of Dr Eggman and Co. The Genesis titles donโt do his character or what the franchise means as justice, as for some these games may be good but being made and produced just to be competition can ruin a franchise. Sonic however improved over the years, as each title progressively began being better and better. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is a game which I just think is fine but god if youโre a Sonic fan youโd probably find this game really awesome.
This is where 3D gaming comes along. The Nintendo 64 saw less sales than the Famicom and SNES but changed the course of gaming forever. If you look at the 64 now, youโd find itโs probably the worst ageing console ever, and it wasnโt even the dominating console this time around. The PlayStation released nearly two years prior, and with the increased competition, and the cancellation of Sonic Xtreme, the team only had 10 months to produce something new for the Dreamcast. Born out of struggle, desperation and love, came the most ambitious game yet.
โ-----------------
Thereโs something about the atmosphere and how the game presents itself that makes Sonic Adventure seem so respectable. For starters, itโs kinda wild to see that this game was released as early as 1998. Few 3D platformers were released at the time (weird to think Banjo and Spyro were released in the same year as this!) but none seemed as advanced and less polygonal than the Dreamcast ones. Unfortunately, you do have to put up with releasing the same year as Ocarina of Time, Half-Life and Metal Gear Solid so you probably mean little importance in the year of 1998. Ok, maybe this one didnโt age that well visually too, but Iโm happy that the aesthetics of this game still sticks today. The game swaps between this more monotone city scenery, new for Sonic at the time, and swaps them out every now and again with the more colourful palette that older Sonic fans would recognise; think Emerald Coast and Casinopolis for example. Helps balance out the repetitiveness of the game, as most levels are more unique than your average Mario. The level design in this game is actually really good! The more open environment does allow you to make more riskier and faster moves, and when you go fast as Sonic it feels great. The more linear levels mean little to no path choices unlike the classic Sonics, but itโs up to you if thatโs a pro or a con. All are great EXCEPT FUCKING SKY CHASE. WHY DO YOU HAVE TO PLAY IT SO MANY TIMES? The minigames are good and chop up the gameplay loops a little but having to basically sit through a 4 minute fucking cutscene when I was already bored from Sonic 2 is mindblowingly dumb. Another thing that the Sonic Team tried was the โAdventure Field'', just another hub world where characters would travel in between. Itโs cool and neat for the idea, but it's mostly just two areas. And the fucking jungle. Whoever designed that is genuinely a horrible human being. I donโt want to talk about gameplay problems that much, mostly because Iโm playing this on the PC port which is a port of the Gamecube port which is a port of the Dreamcast one. All I can say is, just use the BetterSADX and Dreamcast Conversion mods, and that is much about bugs that Iโm touching in this review. Frankly because I'm also tired of hearing, โSonic had a rough transition into 3D!!โ Yeah everyone did, buddy, and every reviewer in the whole wide world has mentioned it. The game did what it could do best, and it threw anything it could at the wall and it stuck. The gameplay is fairly unique, seeming as thereโs 6 or sorta 7 heroes to choose from. I have to probably talk about them now.
Welp, a quick round-up:
Sonic is what youโd imagine the game to be. Your average levels, go crazy fast with his broken spin dash (unsurprisingly fun!), jump on enemies, what youโd expect. His movement is really great and his abilities make you feel unstoppable. Youโll spend the quarter of the game playing as him albeit it spends the time introducing you to the rest of the cast, and acts as the โmain storyโ of the game.
Tails is kind of a repeat of Sonicโs levels with the new criteria of beating him in a race. Basically, go as fast as you can. His fly ability is, really, really, broken and that automatically makes him great. Seriously, fly off the map and see how many shortcuts you can find. Makes Tails a fun character to play, especially after playing as him after beating Sonicโs story (on a side note, I forgot how Tails is literally 8 until I heard his voice. Bring back the kiddy voice. Itโs way funnier).
Knucklesโ gameplay is fairly different to the first two. You still explore areaโs similar to Tails and Sonic but instead you search for parts of the Master Emerald. Essentially he acts as a big metal detector and itโs our turn to play Hide and Seek with magic crystals. Really cool too! Either you spend about 2 minutes on each level or 8 depending if youโre as stupid as me. Not much to say about his moveset? His punches are kinda boring but the glide is pretty useful. His story arc acts as a semi-explanation for the whole Master-Emerald-Chaos-Thingy but who was really listening..
Amy does absolutely nothing to impress. Her movement is slow and her hammer jump is SO inconsistent. Practically her loop is running away from a big robot which is so sluggish that you donโt notice it except the first ten seconds of the stage. Also, she had absolutely no need to be in the story, except her bird friend ate a Chaos Emerald?? Worst part of the game. Girlboss fail.
Big the Cat.
Gamma is quite interesting, as we finally get to play from the villainโs perspective, although he turns good about a third through (but heโs cute so itโs ok C:). You speedrun through Sonicโs levels with some changes, except you have a rocket and youโre constantly on a timer. Fine, but the level changes are kinda improvements over the original.
If I were to rank them:
Sonic
Tails
Knuckles
Gamma
Him.
Amy

Story spoilers ahead
The game finally climaxes with the Super Sonic, which ties all the heroes storiesโ together into a final fight against Perfect Chaos. It was then, during the second phase, the vocals for Open Your Heart kick in, and I feel something Iโve never felt before. This is what Sonic is. The rebellious counterpart, always crazy, inconsistent but filled with so much heart and love that you canโt help but feel admiration for the series. And when itโs all over. You feel like a hero. You feel like a badass. And that might never be recreated in the way that Sonic can ever again.
The Dreamcast flopped, and due to this Sega had to step down as a console manufacturer in the industry, even third-partying for their rivals. Because of this Sonic has had a messy and mediocre history ever since. Icarus, Sega pushed themselves so hard it destroyed their long-term longevity. However recently thereโs been a revival in the sixth-generation. The Dreamcast and Gamecube, both market failures, have received a cult-like following as of recently as many have realised the under-appreciativeness theyโve received. Coming out of the end of this, I have only one thought:
Sonic is really awesome.
โOur positive feelings toward each other can make them work.โ
โOur hearts together form awesome power.โ
To all the Pokรฉmon fans who unanimously agreed these were a weak point in the series - I pity you. Game Freak goes full-blazing and warps the original continuity of vanilla Sun and Moon into something more... "definitive?" Definitive is a incorrect choice of words, as GF instead cranks up integral values of the Poke-experience and leads you to play the boom-based mess left. The writing is uniquely strange and diverges to the point where it just sort of hinders whatever story beats you thought were going to be hit next - most characters have mild-ish growth but god-dammit you'll learn to love these guys so much (giving the professor a personality?). Fights are too easy and then on the same route too hard when US/UM decides it wants to have a difficulty spike day. Key elements of a game most find cumbersome - but this is what Pokรฉmon is. Be charmed by this game like I did - or don't. Tropical settings are neat. Pokรฉmon forms are awesome. Gladion and Lillie are forever my little scrimblos.

Firewatch will make you feel empty.
After everything that has happened, the ending, the people, you would be sat there feeling confused and empty. Perhaps this is the point of the game. Maybe despite the lackluster walking simulator you might have faced, everything was supposed to be bleak and depressing. I think this is what makes it special. FANTASTIC writing (can't go into detail cause spoilers), amazing scenery and great characters that we don't even see throughout. The game's not brilliant, but it's a brilliant mess. Looking forward to Campo Santo's next title.
