Nineteenth GOTW finished for 2023. Way more RPG than I thought I'd find in a NES beat 'em up. Kept me more interested than I thought. Lots of varied paths, builds, options, etc. Lots of repetitive levels, awful platforming/jumping, and hard-to-determine navigation kept this one from being a lot better, but I recognize a lot of that was probably limitations of the system. Really neat little game, but more excited to play some newer versions of this series than I would be to come back to this one.

Third GOTM finished for August 2023. Beat with the Unworked Designs patch to avoid the usual "Working Designs increased the difficulty for no reason" problem. The gameplay itself wasn't much to call home about, as it's mostly a slippery and clunky action-platformer with a good amount of unnecessary backtracking and bad level design. Movement in the game suffers from a head-scratching move to have two-thirds of the screen behind you, and the other one-third of the screen in front of you, often leading to running into enemies and potentially being hit from off-screen (though you can turn that around in your favor with some bosses). A later level in the game makes this particularly infuriating. The bosses were interesting, but once you got a certain party member in the group they primarily handled all of them, so they didn't feel all that cleverly designed or executed. In some cases, they were downright laughable. The schlocky 90's anime dialogue, while often given through terrible voice acting, was pretty funny and honestly felt like a strength of the game. One of the regular NPCs had me chortling on multiple occasions. It's not a great game, but it does have some charm in its characters and dialogue and the gameplay is serviceable enough to package that all up as an overall fun experience.

Third GOTM finished for October 2023. This game would've been downright miserable without a guide, as the mansion is easily the most difficult monster in the game. This building was designed by a lunatic. I genuinely disliked the constant back and forth traipsing through this terrible building, but the atmosphere definitely felt like a proper horror game. Playing this in October for "spooky season" felt appropriate. The alternate control style is definitely appreciated, as are the stunning visuals and redone environments. While I think it has plenty of flaws, I can see why this defined a genre.

Twenty-third GOTW finished for 2022. Relatively fun side-scrolling beat 'em up with some definite difficulty spikes. Music and environments definitely fit the spooky theme, and the bosses were gross and sometimes infuriating. Can feel cheap with the sluggish movement in some areas.

Twenty-fourth GOTW finished for 2022. The music is insanely good in this game, a real high point! I played the GBC version, and the colors looked good. Level design and difficulty were great for the four "main" castles, but everything went off the rails difficulty wise for the last castle. The three bosses are especially annoying, especially Dracula. I'm still really pleased with it overall, especially with the soundtrack, but that last castle needs to be a lot better balanced.

Did not play as part of GOTM or GOTW. Super gorgeous little Game Gear game. Baby's first tactics, with little in the way of complexity or scaling difficulty, so perfect for nearly anyone to play with little trouble. Element triangle is really important in this one. You're not doing much damage against enemies going against the triangle, and you'll do a ton going with it. Some elements, like unit promotion, are not explained at all, but it's a simple enough tactics game that it doesn't really change much if missed or not utilized fully. Overall, a great little game that was fun to play!

First GOTM finished for February 2022. A mostly enjoyable Zelda experience. The dungeons and bosses were fun, and the items were neat and fun to use. There is a TON to do in the overworld of this game, so that was fun to spend time wandering and experiencing many things. Most of all, the game is gorgeous, especially the parts where you are mini and the world becomes big around you. Unbelievable pixel beauty with this game. The Kinstone system, while an interesting way to interact with NPCs in the world, is way overused and poorly implemented as a reward system for many challenges and hidden areas. It's a neat idea, but leaves a bad taste in the mouth when used as a chest reward at the end of a mini-dungeon.

Third GOTM finished for October 2022. Aside from the slightly wonky aiming/directional controls, this is a fantastically executed game. In a sweet spot of just a handful of hours long, but still packed with tons of content and details to explore and find. Had a blast!

First GOTM finished for April 2022. Simple, short, relatively relaxing game with some great music. Varied pathways and options give a lot of replayability, but I didn't really enjoy my time enough with this one to replay it. Solid, if unspectacular.

Second game beaten for GOTM December 2021. Just a phenomenal game. The art style ages well, the gameplay is fun, and the writing is hilarious and engaging. Fantastic game!

Third GOTM finished for 2022. I recall attempting to play this one multiple times when I was younger, but it never really caught on with me. After some time learning the Djinni system, the game clicked this time around and I had a blast playing it! The combat was really great and satisfying, and the story was compelling enough, although this is clearly a "Part 1" to a story so left a lot to be desired at the end. Great game!

First GOTM finished for June 2022. Really liked this little Game Boy game. The dialogue was silly and fun, and while sometimes a little loose the story was serviceable. The "bump" gameplay was easy enough, though it was irritating that it was used for both combat and NPC interaction. Overall, really enjoyed my time with this one!

First GOTM finished for October 2022. Interesting little GameBoy platformer, where you play a spirit who has the ability to possess other enemy characters in order to obtain their specific abilities as you progress through the levels. The variety in the enemy abilities was nice, but the game felt clunky in the platforming and the bosses were pretty tough. Neat little game, quick and dirty at less than an hour.

Woof, does this game show its age. Several platforming bits that feel pretty awful to navigate, along with some frustrating difficulty. Glitchy textures and screen transitions don't help. Music was at least mostly good, but glad this one was short.

Second GOTW finished for 2023. Hearing Turtles In A Half Shell through a GB was super fun, but otherwise quite boring. Basically just walk forward, hit front or back to one-hit kill enemies, then continue to walk forward. Some light jumping here and there. The bosses were at least something, but could be stunned when hit so many could just be stun-locked into oblivion. At least it only took about 30 minutes.
