A Beginner's Guide to Sonic the Hedgehog
Hey, you! Yeah, you! You ever heard of this guy named Sonic the Hedgehog? He's kind of a big deal! He had two smash hit movies recently and has huge new game on the horizon. No doubt you want to want to learn more about him and the franchise, just in time for the upcoming release of Sonic Frontiers. However, is the sheer amount of Sonic content over the past few decades overwhelming, making it so you don't know where to start? Not to worry! As what I'd call a Sonic Connoisseur, I'll be here to show you the way to the best places to get invested in Sonic and the world as cool and blue as him!
I feel as though a lot of recommended places to get into the series, such as Generations or the IDW comic books, often require a good amount of predisposed knowledge to get the best out of it. The goal of this isn't necessarily to make a strict required playing order to play them since each game is relatively standalone, but to serve as the best possible introduction to the cast of characters and the world they inhabit.
This isn't a list of every game in the series should play, far from it, but these are a main primer for understanding the series. I'm making this with the assumption that someone has a console like the PS4/5 or the Nintendo Switch, as well as a PC that's powerful enough to handle Generations relatively well, though I will also provide other available platforms if you happen to have access to those.
And with that, let's be cool, be wild, be groovy and get started!

Thank you!
More people need to play Sonic, so thank you SO VERY MUCH fot this!!!
As a fellow Sonic connoisseur I disagree with a lot in this list, but I'll keep it to myself since this is the most important public-services list on this site.

@CDX No problem! Really glad this could be of use! I am curious about what your disagreements with this might be. Maybe you could message me on discord about it so we could discuss it further?
Sure! Add me there, CDX#8116. ;-)
Made a few updates to this, including available platforms for each of the games, as well as an extended "what's next?" segment
This list reads so damn wholesome I love it
THE "WHAT'S NEXT" IS THE BLUE SPHERES LOCK-ON, HAHAHAHAHA
Genius! Absolutely genius! XD

Glad to see SA1 as the top entry point, it’s really one of the mostly easier Sonic games without being too hand-holdy about it and it represents what to look forward to really well as the bridge between classic and modern.
