A masterclass in world design and atmosphere. The music is haunting, the art direction is stunning, the combat is crunchy (or squishy?) and the platforming is precise and satisfying. My only real issues are with the readability of certain fights and a lack of accessibility options, but beyond those grievances this is an unmissable crowning achievement in both the Metroidvania genre, and video games as a whole.

Even all these years later, Super Metroid stands tall as a triumphant, genre-defining gem with incredible pacing and progression, an unshakably engrossing atmosphere, phenomenal world design and eternally gorgeous music and visuals. Wow.

Super duper cosy game, perfect for playing through to relax after a long day. The game is super laid back in regard to exploring the island - as soon as you set off, you're free to explore and collect gold feathers in any order you like. Equally, it's up to you how much or how little side content you engage with - so long as you find enough feathers to reach the peak, that is.
I think the decision to not give the player a map was a wise one. This way, it encourages us to go where we want to or use the in-world paths and signs to navigate, as opposed to following some marker on a map, which (alongside the freedom to explore) is a big part of what makes A Short Hike such an engrossing, lovable experience. When paired with a wonderful visual style, soothing music, excellent dialogue and a humble little tale of a bird with a lot on her mind, you've got yourself the perfect game to unwind.
