Kind of feel like an asshole not giving this five stars; it really deserves it for its place in gaming history alone. For 2001, it's insanely cinematic, and in a way that doesn't negatively affect gameplay. The bullet time shooting is insanely fun, levels are perfectly paced, and Max's hardboiled narration is so perfect I could die. That said, it doesn't run perfectly on modern machines. I had to do some tinkering to get cutscene audio and for it to properly load in widescreen, and even after that I had some weird movement and geometry glitching several times throughout, especially during the nightmare levels. That's a bit of a blemish, to be sure, but all things age eventually. Can't complain too much. Still, iron out those technical problems and this is an easy 5/5.
Burned through the base campaign in a day. It's mechanically fun and the level design is great, but a lot of the enemies are very tedious to fight, especially shamblers and vores. The final level was particularly underwhelming, since it's just a hallway full of traps and these two enemy types. Overall fun, but the troubled development cycle is quite obvious. Might return for the expansion levels eventually.
