Utter insanity that this is a Doom mod, derived from ANOTHER Doom mod. I remember when this first came out, and didn't think it was gonna be very good, because it's a kart racer in the Doom engine. I thought it was completely absurd.
I was the absolutely blown away by how great the driving feels, and how great the power-ups are. This game has a blue shell equivalent, but it's genius that if you manage to maintain enough speed and boosts, you can outrun it for the entire race.
It's little stuff like that which sets it apart from other kart-racers like Mario Kart. But what truly makes it stand out is the ginormous modding community. Infinite map possibilites, characters, and gameplay tweaks.
The only thing to be desired is a proper Grand Prix mode...but that's what the sequel aims to deliver on.
It's a good thing that finally came out today.
But don't shy away from this one. Until the modding scene blows up for Ring Racers, the community for this will be what makes it worth coming back to.

genuinely one of my favorite kart racers to play with friends! the amount of tracks and characters people have made for this game is astounding and for the most part extremely well made. i do wish it was slightly easier to find the best of the best for mods but not a huge deal at the end of the day.
The only real appeal to me is all the character mods, which doesn't mean a lot when you don't have anyone to play with (I don't like online matchmaking either). Luckily, I have a mod that adds bots to race with, so I use that to create outrageous scenarios such as Reimu from Toohoo racing against fifteen RollerCoaster Tycoon guests. That is the only amount of fun I have.
Coming back to this after a while, It's still really fun. But to be honest, I feel as if the online portion has dwindled quite a lot. 90% of public servers are completely barren, and the ones that do have people are some of the most newbie-unfriendly servers that have the need to include the most complex gameplay-altering mods on top of nearly a gigabyte's worth of maps, characters, and a load of other bloat with also the potential to have some of the worst ping imaginable.
If you wanna have a good time, I strongly recommend hosting your own server tuned to your own preferences, as well as inviting your friends to play. Setting up a server can be complicated but it's worth it.
And yes, I dislike the Acrobatics mod. It creates a very high skill floor and I will die on that hill.

I absolutely adored this game when it came out, spending hundreds of hours on it, but it hasn't been aging well. The base gameplay is kind of boring and the vanilla maps are mostly terrible compared to the custom maps, but the only active servers now are M.U.G.E.N.-tier clusterfucks.
I am well beyond ready to have a clean slate with Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers, which I hope will be worthy of 5 stars.

Quite possibly one of the greatest Kart racers I've ever played lol.
I've always been the type of freak that enjoys the feel of a Crash Team Racing over that of Mario Kart (especially Mario Kart 8), and this game happens to tickle those sensibilities for me just enough that it's become the racing game of choice in our friend group.
The fact that it's incredibly light on resources, is infinitely moddable, and has an actually good netcode also helps. It's just always a great time with friends.

The single best kart racer ever made gameplay-wise, bar none in my opinion. The core gameplay of this game has led me to log hundreds of hours on servers, having the time of my life all the while. I can’t stress enough how fun and satisfying just… driving around in this game is, which is also helped the (mostly, fuck you Ganbare) amazing and beautifully retro tracks. Seriously, the social aspect of this game in combination with its gameplay leads to an infinitely replayable experience, as long as you have people to play with.
Unfortunately, that’s also the problem with it. Due to the games(current) only single-player content being time trials, if there’s nobody online on the servers you like, you’re shit outta luck. And for me, because I personally prefer vanilla gameplay, that’s lead to very little personal playtime on SRB2K for quite some time, as the community has mostly turned to modded gameplay as we await the next update/sequel, although said update/sequel will definitely rekindle the community.
Overall, the core gameplay is ultra-addicting and it’s a phenomenal social experience, but actually getting to that point may be difficult at the moment if you don’t enjoy modded gameplay.
