For what I enjoyed about Dark Souls 1, what a disappointing sequel! The troubled development really shows in the pacing and world design of the game, both feel so messy. Some areas have some particularly bad enemy placement like Iron Keep and Shrine of Amana. There's a ton of bosses but they really range in quality.
I like Majula as a hub area, and the general gameplay is still fun. But I neither view the game interesting nor an improvement compared to DS1.

Unjustly overlooked, this game features complex level design and a variety of enemy encounters that challenge even seasoned players. The combat mechanics are finely tuned, requiring precision and strategy. Despite mixed reactions, its unique atmosphere, characterized by haunting visuals and a disorienting world, offers a distinctive experience that stands out in the series.
While Dark Souls II has quite doubled-down on the more action-y parts of its core mechanics, it made sure to retain some of the novelty of its boss fight.
Yes, overworld wasn't really much cohesive. There's a lot of half-assed mechanics and throwbacks, and gank city is where Dark Souls 2 is set in.
I've considered all of that but I do miss From Software's consideration on structuring a boss-arena uniquely, from terrain and level-design before it became simply a "press the dodge button on the right-time", the Souls game that most probably know now.

I really want to hate this game from what everyone has said. But I’ve gotta be honest, it’s not that bad. Sure there’s annoying shit like adaptivity and losing health every death which sucks balls. But the first darks souls had a lot of shit that sucked balls too. I think the thing I like about this one more is the locations. There’s a lot of really cool areas like drangelic castle and the dragon island place. The bosses are also really easy in this. The game does drag on a ton though. The post shrine of winter stuff is good so I wouldn’t take it away, but I think it would’ve been good to clean up some of the areas that do suck like no man’s wharf and the spider place. That all being said, it’s not great or anything. I just didn’t want to kill myself the whole time is what I expected
Nota: 5.6/10

Judging by the recent wave of sweaty Arena PvP Nerds and irony-poisoned Youtube Video Essayists all seemingly collectively drooling over this game all of a sudden, one would think we were all wrong back in the days when preemptively judging DS2 for its poor design and, well, no. No we weren't, as this game, while possibly over-hated, sure, it's really not something I would call good, especially when compared to the other entires in the Souls trilogy, heck, even when comparing it to more modern Souls-likes it genuinely doesn't stand a chance and you're better off looking somewhere else. Unless of course, you like struggling with clunky controls when navigating rooms full of copy-pasted enemies just to reach underwhelming and mechanically simplistic bosses. For everyone else (Normal People) you'll have more fun with the 3rd game in the series.
