The contrarians favorite Metal Slug game. I'm honestly surprised I never heard of this game until picking it at random and I think anyone who enjoys Metal Slug owes it to themselves to play this at some point. Shame about the absence of any sort of story but I imagine Irems withdrawal from making video games hindered development. Very, very good fun.

Reminded me more of Virtua Cop than Time Crisis or House of the Dead, the biggest problem with this game is that the levels are just waaaaaaay too long. Rail shooters should be fast-paced frantic affairs but every level in this game stops you way too many times, and when you consider the game is very, very easy it just makes this game a slog to finish, even if its only about 2-3 hours long. The frequent QTEs don't really add anything to the game other than being an annoyance and you can just tell the writers thought they were being really, really funny. It does feel really polished which is surprising but the levels themselves are so boring that I can't really recommend it unless you are desperate for light-gun options.
The first "modern" (2003!) Ys ended up being one of the lesser entries for me.
There are unfortunate pacing issues, a story with thin characterization even by Ys standards, just "okay" music and quite possibly the worst long jump mechanic I've ever had the misfortune of using (luckily you only need to use it a handful of times but I'm so glad they never brought it back). The original release didn't even have fast-travel! It's clearly a hybrid of the classic games and what would define the series moving forward, both of which are great on their own, but when mixed together leaves the experience feeling incomplete. Its a real shame because this could've been one of the better Ys stories too...
its not a bad game by any means but it doesn't have that same appeal that draws me to other games in the series. It doesn't really excel in any one area which places it near the bottom of my favorite Ys games.
