Excellent game with an amazing story. However, expect the sluggishness and grindiness of an early SFC JRPG. I died to the final boss, and didn't bother going through the entire final dungeon again for another shot. If you want to experience Dragon Quest V, stick with the DS localization. Still better than the movie, though.

The amount of creativity and customization available is amazing, and really adds a lot to the game. However, not much has been done to fix some of the more annoying aspects of the 3DS original. All but one party member is AI controlled, without even as much as a tactics menu to help guide them in the right direction. Expect lots of frustration directed towards party members inflicting unwanted statuses on eachother, wasting their turns on useless moves, wasting their turns on unwanted healing, and not healing in vital moments. This, combined with a difficulty primarily consisting of unavoidable OHKO attacks spells a recipe for disaster in the more challenging areas of the game. The game has practically zero replay value outside of the first playthrough, and postgame is more artificially difficult than anything else.

A wacky, uncharacteristic, and chaotic experience. The random, uncontrollable nature of most events makes it all the more special when things line up in the way you want them to. Though, a lot of the problems and minigames get annoying fast. The lack of direct control is novel at first, but wears off when you start wanting to micromanage things.

My boyfriend and I played this game together expecting a silly little game where you play as a cat, and get to do cat things. 15 minutes later we were thrust into a post-apocalyptic hellscape and forced to run away from headcrabs while fulfilling monotonous fetch quests. Eventually we got a "gun" and were introduced to the worst combat system in the world. Our playthrough ended when a robot spent a half hour twisting a hatch open, which bluescreened his computer.
This game isn't perfect, but it's an excellent tactical RTS with a beautiful story and engaging characters. Final Fantasy's RPG elements are combined with tactical gameplay to create a simple to understand entryway into the tactical RPG genre. The difficulty can be frustrating at times, but manageable as long as you know what you're doing. The one thing I wouldn't recommend is going for 100% completion, as doing so requires hours of grinding, and activates a significant spike in difficulty. Don't come in expecting the next mainline Final Fantasy title, and you'll have a good time.
