Shmups!

Shmup list organized from my fav to least.

Hot takes are present, but they are objectively correct and only seem “Hot” because you lack understanding. Sorry!

Unrated games are on the list are ‘will play’

Still waiting for this one to ‘click’

I did really enjoy leveling up my powers different each playthrough- but felt like the levels existed solely for this reason and sacrificed a lot of difficulty due to that design.

The switching between the lower-difficulty levels to the end-level boss to use the build you’ve built is fun as you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor- but I found myself ditching several of the weapons in exchange for only a couple I considered the clear best.
Even leveling those underwhelming weapons never had me feel like it was worth it, as the edge-cases where they were useful were usually only slightly more difficult with different weapon.

I plan on returning to this game due to its beloved-ness in the future!
Fishing but you know where all the fish are and they’re able to channel their rage to fire laser beams.

The music is so incredible, the way it flows between levels and changes for boss fights.

The enemy design is out of this world- bosses actually FEEL like bosses, they’re scary and huge and even though there are some which throw some wack at you, once you know it’s there it’s up to you to contend with it.

If you feel the game is too easy, you can always take a tougher route. There’s a huge level tree with two branching paths at the end of each level which allow you to find what path best suits your preference.

There are DEFINITELY harder/easier paths- but you WILL be missing some of the coolest boss enemies if you stick with the easy path. It’s so much fun just going to levels you’ve never been in before and seeing their environments.

I’d been playing this in the Saturn which has a SIGNIFICANTLY slower rate of fire than the arcade versions auto-fire rec (30hz?) which made this game last a lot longer- but also let me see a lot of the Boss-patterns which you just low through if you’re using the arcade rate of fire.
The downside of the low rate of fire is that several stages become impossible since you just don’t have the firepower to stop a wall of enemies all flying in a straight line towards your ship…

One of the greats!
Coming back to this at some point in time..
The long load times and reliance on memorisation have got me confused on why this is so well liked… maybe when I’m older I’ll understand (I’m 5’5” and haven’t grown in 4 years)
The most addicting shmup I’ve ever played!

A bunch of characters all with fun play styles and funny personalities. Hearing their motivations during the stage-transition dialogue is so awesome, AND you can play single player alternating between two different characters on death which lets you see the multiplayer character interactions between what two characters you choose. AWESOME!!!!

The difficulty slider is also great- easy modes don’t feel patronising in the slightest, and the medium/high levels change the bullet speed/density in ways that make the different levels feel like different games in what the game expects of the player (in a good way).

You may ask yourself; “Is there something wrong with this game?” I legit have no clue lmfao shit is so good I actually have no idea please email me if you find something
They sent the Dreamcast rom of this out on a usb drive with the Voyager… the soundtrack killed the aliens
Gunbird 1 contains all of the pieces that would eventually be glued together perfectly, but the looooow difficulty of the early levels make restarting a slog.

The characters are great- I played GB2 before GB1, so it’s cool to see ancestors of the modern characters.

One things that the Gunbird series excels at is a great two-player experience. Because many of the enemies don’t have homing/directed bullets, it’s much easier to have multiple characters on the screen without feeling like you have to take into account who an enemy is aggro’d to.

All in all a good game, but definitely blown out of the water by its sequel.
Pressing the button that makes me invincible every 3 seconds to avoid the barrage of bullets fired every 4 seconds.
Instead of shooting up, you can rotate your tank head in 8 different directions, which helps when levels change from moving upwards, to left, to right- it is such a cool and dynamic feature that makes the fun one of my favorite just to throw on.

Difficulty for earlier levels isn’t too high, but the control scheme makes it so that getting your bearings is enjoyable. The scoring system works by collecting drops that increase in point value for each one picked up. Miss one, and you’ll have to start chaining from the lowest point value.
It’s never TOO difficult to maintain your chain as long as you’re being strategic is what you shoot, and makes levels that you’re starting to get the hang of even more fun by adding that extra element.

There are several different weapons types that you can pick up which drastically change the way you go about levels and boss battles. My favorite is the yoyo ability, which sacrifices range for power.

While the scoring system may be derivative (don’t fix what ain’t broken), the rotating aiming and dynamic levels make this one super unique and just soooo so much fun!!!
Dark and cool environment with tedious tedious tedious enemy patterns.
A bunch of characters that all let you play a fun game in a bunch of fun ways.

The grazing mechanic makes it so that early stages stay interesting since what nets you score is buddying up to the things that kill you.

The later stages are insane… but if they weren’t then what’s even the point?
I like this game more every time I return to it.

The mastery of different ‘fundamentals’ from different shmups directly contribute to your progression. A level-by-level knowledge check that only requires execution is actually super fun when a cute girl pats you on the back at the end of it.

One title that has MAJORLY grown on me.. ultimate ship fanservice
Anime girls using centrifugal force to destroy robots.

The mechanic is interesting and could be fun- but routing is quite rigid. Once you learn how stages ‘should’ be played, it just feels like going through the motions to reclaim what ground is lost when you Game Over.

Improving routing is fun- but didn’t hold my interest.
