Played the hd version on steam also more thinking 7.5/10
if i was rating this game purely off of story it would probably be a 9 i adored it aside from a couple issues but most of those are minimal. I loved tidus, yuna, auron and khimari and the story was mostly engaging throughout. my only complaints story wise are that it kind of dragged until auron joined the party, rikku and lulu are extremely underutilized, and wakka is an insufferable character 3/4s of the game and then apologizes once for his batshit insane racism and everyone just moves on he sucks so bad.
Gameplay wise is really where i have problems with this game. The one great thing i will say is that I love the battle system and how you can freely change characters with no reprecussions mid turn. I also love how if you buff a character and switch them out they will still be buffed when they come back. Aside from that the music is really amazing.
Now for the bad I have a lot of complaints.
1) I played with a mod that gave the whole party ap. I probably would have dropped the game without it the game would be a grindy slog without it
2) Late game boss design sucked ASS (mainly yunalesca and jecht) too many status effects used that you cant really do shit about if you dont have the right armor. I probably would have dropped the game in the final boss room if i didnt have boosters cuz i wasnt grinding and backtracking for god knows how long to beat one boss
3) which brings me to the customization system which is horrible. All of the abilities require way too much shit to get especially for a while party i dont wanna spend an hour stealing off of the same enemy
4) the sphere grid system also sucks ass and is super unintuitive. i can kind of understand the idea on paper but the execution is poor especially with needing spheres to activate nodes if it was just ap it would be so much better but having to grind for levels as well as grind for items to access those levels is such a shitty system and its hard to make you characters stronger when none of the paths have anything you want

Im really unsure of how to rate this because up until the last two hours or so I thought this game was pretty much perfect. A few missteps with bosses in areas they shouldnt have been or some areas being drawn out and one major area cut but overall incredible. The build up to the forgetten capitol was also incredible and really had me feeling every emotion. I also loved the zack storyline at that point. However, the ending was incredibly disappointing to me.
SPOILERS AHEAD
This game did not need a grand finale. This is what most of the problems come back to. Aeriths death should have been sudden and short and heartfelt. I loved how it was being done aside from the whispers up until jenova. I thought the jenova fight was great the music was great but then it kept going. we did not need what felt like 20 forms of sephiroth. there was little to no focus on aeriths death because they wanted to make the worlds converge. The worlds converging was especially dumb because it felt like there could be so much more done in the zack timeline and the worlds converging would fit perfectly into the final fight in the northern crater where a grand finale would be fitting. The worlds converging also created the worst part to me which was giving cloud more personality issues at this point. I dont like that could seemingly does not know she is dead. In the original when aerith dies that is the first time in the whole game that cloud actually feels something. But none of that is present here. he does not say anything about his pain to sephiroth like in the original. there is no goodbye with the party. and worst of all we dont even get to see him lower her body into the lake. also i dont like whatever the shit with the black materia was in the final cutscene. It feels like they were trying way to hard to go above and beyond with this ending and lost sight of what made the scene so iconic and impactful in the first place.

2012
still fine but a huge step down from the original
the nodes are nowhere near as good as the levels in the first game as the spawns are random so there is not much strategizing and a lot more bullshit
The unkillable enemies are horrible and really make the levels worse
new enemy types are a mixed bag and could be great if the spawns werent random but sometimes an exploding enemy will be right in front of you when you spawn and you just have to take the chance
The hacks and cores are interesting in concept but are not utilized as well due to the randomness. Especially the hacks would be much better if you could select them ahead of time and could choose ones that synergize with eachother instead of just getting shitty luck
I like the new weapons they are cool
the ending was very interesting in concept but was executed horribly and drags on way too long. My favorite parts of the first game were the side modes but they dont seem to exist in this one and if they do i wont know cuz im not waiting two and a half fucking hours to play the game again.

was feeling a 4 star but the ending sequence was so fucking good so that bumped it up
the things keeping it from being 5 stars are really just how it shows its age. The systems are all super barebones (social sim, social links, tartarus, having to use tactics, etc.) and its hard to go back to them after playing p5 and even 4 where they are vastly improved on but i understand that it was the first time so i get it.

much better combat than the original the venom abilities are great and add a lot to the combat also the gadgets are much more useful and intuitive and flow better than the ones in the original
i do wish it was longer tho i feel like it is speedrunning through the story and a lot of the side content feels the same as the first one which is kinda boring
