This game is pretty spectacular actually. Pretty grindy, especially because I didn't use a few of the characters, kinda bites you in the ass in the endgame. Kefka lives up to the hype and is easily one of my new favourite villains. The characters are all pretty memorable, except for Gau, Strago and Relm not really doing much, and Gogo, Umaro and Mog are supposed to just be bonus characters. The gameplay isn't really anything that special, it is pretty good though, Overall this game I think holds up pretty well, a pretty good end to the 2D Final Fantasy games, which feels funny to say since it's the first one I played.
Honestly, this game isn't THAT bad. It's certainly my least favourite Zelda game I've beaten until I finally beat Zelda II. This game has a lot of charm, but also a lot of bullshit. The Temple of the Ocean King can suck my ass. This playthrough I noticed I had the mindset of if it was 2007 and this game was new, looking at old GameFAQ boards, and I really do see this game as a pretty big disappointment for it's time, especially since this was the game AFTER Twilight Princess. As a sequel to Wind Waker, it doesn't even really do that much.
But after all the negatives, this game genuinely has some decent positives. Although the combat is super uninteresting, you just tap to attack, the bosses are actually pretty great for a DS installment, using the top screen as either an extended view of the arena, or even as a POV in one fight. The final boss is also genuinely pretty good. Some of the puzzles are pretty fun to solve as well (although Spirit Tracks takes it to the max, but we'll get to that one). I think a couple of the dungeons are also pretty well designed. The story isn't very good and also has some weird writing in the first portions, but it has some fairly funny moments, Linebeck is one of the best Zelda characters.
Overall this game isn't the most interesting Zelda game, and at times kinda boring to play, but it still is a decent play through. If you're planning on playing every Zelda game, I don't think this is one that necessarily deserves to be rushed through in all honesty.
