Didn't realize this is the same game as Metal Slug X which I've played previously. Nevertheless - these are fun.

Been playing a lot of scrolling shooters lately to make some progress on the various retro game collections I've had hanging around - ironic because it really isn't a genre I have much attachment to, so if you're a SHMUP head add a half or full star to all my reviews for your own reference. That said this is one of the better ones I've played, with incredible visual design. The organic enemies are fantastic, literally the first thing that flies at you when you boot up the game is a flock of flying squids. Incredible. Plays well too, although I don't like that the power-ups replace each other - definitely prefer the games where you can load up with a crazy build, although this way you don't lose as much if you die, so there's ups and downs.

Really excellent little action puzzle/platformer kind of game. Much like Crack Down (1989) which I played through yesterday, I find these tight little action games that are about careful and precise movement and shooting really compelling. Where Crack Down had a wall hugging mechanic to dodge bullets, Bonanza Bros. with it's 2.5D side view plays the clever trick of having one additional tile of depth - so there are functionally two flat 2D levels next to each other, and you can step forward and back between them to dodge bullets and enemies. It's really clever, and once you get the hang of things you can absolutely weave your way between enemy attacks and fire. Nothing more delightful than waiting for an armored enemy to approach you and perfectly stepping out as he steps in to avoid him. Plus I love the character designs. The two roundest crooks you've ever seen in your life.

This kicks ass. Hotline Miami predecessor in a really sick way. Definitely frustrating and with a punishing level of difficulty, but the core gameplay loop is great. Love the way you can stick to the wall to dodge bullets. Also Mandrills as an enemy is the tip of inspired 80s game shit that you don't see anymore.

A contra-fied take on the scrolling shooter - I enjoyed it more than many similar games I've tried, but couldn't imagine playing through it without the switch's rewind function.

Passable but nothing I'd recommend.

Feel sorry for any kid that got stuck with this instead of a good nes game.

Brutally difficult! I believe this is the version of the game included in the Konami Arcade Classics collection, hopefully I'm logging the correct version. I'm saying I completed it but I was not able to get to the end of the final level, even using every cheating method available to me in the collection. Still a neat little thing.

I know it's part of the bit that the game is bad but the bit was not compelling enough for all that.

This game rocks - neat little action stealth puzzle thing. The two main mechanics are jumping and rewiring switches and it all feels so good - a delight from start to finish.

Damn that's one of the best ones of those to ever exist. The creativity of the enemy designs is only surpassed by the delight of the gameplay loop. I love hunting for the next little door that will turn out to be the entrance to a whole new area of the map. Plus the upside down castle has to be one of the greatest ideas in gaming, the reveal, the execution, and the difficulty spike all kick ass. All timer for a reason.

There's some evil stuff in here. I realize the real super mario bros 2 (the lost levels) has the poison mushroom immediately upon starting it so that's the real origin point of evil mario levels, but there's some wild level design in here! It also feels a bit like Doom (ironic because this game was part of the inspiration for doom) in the way that there are hundreds of tossed off ideas in here that could be whole games, and eventually someone else WOULD pick them up and make them into their own games. Cool ass object, still fun to play, hard as hell.

Really like the gameplay - I could tinker with these little machines all day. I think the story, while sweet, is basically empty calories - would've liked something with a bit more substance - come on it's right there for the writing: human relationships aren't as easy to repair as these little machines!

This is cool. Love a small strange adventure platformer with a sprint button, a motorcycle, and the aesthetics of grim eastern european cinema.

Climb into the back seat! Come on! Don't try to start the engine you Homestuck dialogue ass moron! None of your wheels are touching anything! There's no surface for them to connect with to create movement! What are you doing???

I probably would have liked this more if I'd played it when it came out, when I was 23. But maybe not!
