remakes that cause damage

this is a companion to remakes that can replace

the criteria is effectively the opposite. the games listed here will either be harmful to the original's image, or "remasters" that are broken in ways that make them all around worse to play (silent hill hd collection is the perfect example of this)

suggestions are welcome, but inclusions are strict (no sotc 2018 - the aesthetic is marginally altered but the identity of the game is fully intact and it controls identically)

Yakuza Kiwami
Yakuza Kiwami
standalone yakuza 0 dlc with none of the style or personality of the original yakuza. fucks up the soundtrack and tacks on mechanics that bloat the experience substantially

fuck majima everywhere and its progressions system
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
edge case - this game is fine, really (art direction aside) but the hitboxes are wonkier and make a decent amount of the platforming much stricter than it's supposed to be
Ratchet & Clank
Ratchet & Clank
preserves nothing at all about the original's intent and is nothing more than a pixar-knockoff cashgrab. gets frequently lauded as an improvement over the original for inexplicable psyop reasons

typically i'd be willing to classify this as a reimagining - something transformative - but i'm not willing to look past this game completely defying everything the original stands for with absolutely nothing to show for it beyond more modern appealing combat
Yakuza Kiwami 2
Yakuza Kiwami 2
standalone yakuza 6 dlc which saps yakuza 2 of its identity in the same way that k1 does to y1. 6-ified music, 6-ified gameplay. missing content from the original too

also just has bad direction. whoever decided SiM was a good replacement for the crazy ken band was out of their fucking mind
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D
neutered bosses (among other babified mechanic changes) and completely different art direction. never trust a developer who hates their own work on god
Persona 3 Portable
Persona 3 Portable
catch-all for persona 3 rereleases

p3 portable: the unambiguous flaw here is the lack of anime cutscenes. some people prefer the vn format for exploration but most do not. direct party control is contentious, but it cannot be denied that its inclusion began to muddy the reputation of p3fes and frame it as game that had aged poorly. p3p is not designed around its gameplay changes, so there's a definite loss of identity here, especially because the lack of party control played into p3's narrative

it'd be unfair not to mention the female protagonist route, which is a nice remix of the game and worth checking out for fans of any version

p3 reload: replaces p3's identity and aesthetic with that of its movies and also largely nixes the direction of the original game. maintains portable's direct party control, but does not include the female protagonist and (currently) also does not include 'the answer' from fes

does include some scenes to expand upon antagonists and fully voices social links. also changes the way tartarus works significantly
Demon's Souls
Demon's Souls
haphazardly remodels a cult classic with no regard whatsoever for its art direction

completely identical gameplay tho!
Yakuza 3 Remastered
Yakuza 3 Remastered
butchered enemy ai that doesn't stop blocking or quickstepping makes this already tedious game about a hundred times more so
Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut
Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut
has harmed the dreamcast original's reputation primarily due to a lot of glitchiness, but also uneven art direction
Bully: Scholarship Edition
Bully: Scholarship Edition
game dev dont release a broken buggy pc port challenge minute 1
Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories
Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories
while the fully voiced cutscenes are an arguable improvement, the identity of the gba release is sacrificed in favor of asset recycling from kh1

the gameplay is also extremely fucking confusing and generally sours the reputation of the original
Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster
Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster
totally fucked models particularly on x. x-2 is mostly fine because the models weren't remade, but everyone in x looks like they've been dolled up for shitty beauty commercials. yuna especially is incapable of having facial expressions
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated
edge case - this is mostly fine for someone unfamiliar with the original, but the modified controls coupled with unchanged level design and additional invisible walls gives the impression of this game being rougher than its established fans remember

also general lack of animation/polish in places which the original does not share
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona
on one hand, this is the best way to play p1 besides the japanese ps1 release. on the other, it has many problems of its own - primarily related to gameplay being neutered and the soundtrack being way too condensed and repetitive

there is a fan patch to restore the original music, but it's not complete. p1 has an absolutely massive soundtrack and many of its tracks aren't accounted for
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy IX
horrendously ugly mobile port that undersells how gorgeous of a game the original is
Zero Escape: The Nonary Games
Zero Escape: The Nonary Games
for 999 specifically

why? that's a good question indeed. i suggest you don't look it up!
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania
in short: the friction's fucked up from the originals

this is a game about rolling a ball on an obstacle course. physics are important!

also the minigames are fucked up
Half-Life: Source
Half-Life: Source
pointless to play this version when all it does is play exactly the same and introduce new bugs
Sonic Colors: Ultimate
Sonic Colors: Ultimate
for what it's worth the horrible bugginess makes this more entertaining than the original release

so you might as well play this one tbh
Persona 2: Innocent Sin
Persona 2: Innocent Sin
edge case - if the braindead, godawful gameplay here has turned you away, try the fan translation of the ps1 version and see if you prefer that

the psp port makes localization improvements and increases the overall speed of the game, but this is at the cost of it becoming the literal easiest jrpg you may ever play

seriously - i never game-overed once in this entire thing. it's fucking braindead
Sonic Origins
Sonic Origins
mj songs in sonic 3 are replaced with beta tracks. seeing that this is a series where the music is half the experience

also the physics are fucked up in places
Batman: Return to Arkham
Batman: Return to Arkham
big fan of ports of old games that look inexplicably and inarguably worse than their original versions
Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter
Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter
catch-all for every serious sam hd remaster

ugly as fuck and personality-sapping in many regards

makes me realize i actually should try this game again because i didn't know it used to not look like dogshit
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
effectively a different game from the 360 release

the ps3 couldn't handle the high amount of enemies on-screen, so they were cut substantially and buffed to compensate. this makes dismemberment (a core mechanic in the original release) a complete pain in the ass

sigma 1 is also on thin ice, but it's not nearly as fucked up as this
Klonoa
Klonoa
pretty easily the worst version of klonoa to play due to its drab visuals

even if you don't want to play the ps1 original (for whatever reason) phantasy reverie's version is just a more faithful rendition of this wii port anyway
Blood: Fresh Supply
Blood: Fresh Supply
bad buggy port. only buy this to download the original blood instead
Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis
Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis
Lol. Lmao even
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition
who would've thunk porting mobile ports to modern systems wouldn't be ideal
Mega Man: The Wily Wars
Mega Man: The Wily Wars
they fucked up the hitboxes and made it ugly
Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn
Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn
uglier and lacks content from the original (despite having some new modes of its own)

fine for a returning fan but not ideal for getting through the base game
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD
robomodo gaming
The House of the Dead: Remake
The House of the Dead: Remake
controls poorly and looks like shit
Secret of Mana
Secret of Mana
this shit is fucking ugly!!!
Warcraft III: Reforged
Warcraft III: Reforged
what the fuck are you doing and why is this garbage the only version with multiplayer supported on battle.net - are you fucking insane?
Baroque
Baroque
thank god the original is translated now
Ape Escape: On the Loose
Ape Escape: On the Loose
have you ever wondered what it'd be like to play a game designed for two analog sticks on a console with only one?
Cave Story 3D
Cave Story 3D
there's no reason to play anything other than the original release for a multitude of reasons
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled
cowa-fuckin-piece-of-dog-shit
Tales of Phantasia
Tales of Phantasia
gba version has slowdown during combat and shittier music
Resident Evil 4: Mobile Edition
Resident Evil 4: Mobile Edition
all the resident evil remakes are nothing more than alternate takes on the original games

however

this mobile port burned me out on re4 before i even played the original version. i cannot think of a release more damaging than one that disengages someone from its source material altogether

fuck you re4 mobile edition
XIII
XIII
technical shitshow which played and looked worse than the original
Tales of Symphonia Remastered
Tales of Symphonia Remastered
bad technical problems, graphical errors and frame dips
Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition
Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition
airbrushed ass game with other bad choices. backlashed so hard the devs included the original version as a free 'bonus'
Commandos 3: HD Remaster
Commandos 3: HD Remaster
when the game is identical but buggier
Double Dragon II: Wander of the Dragons
Double Dragon II: Wander of the Dragons
genuinely what the fuck happened here
BioShock
BioShock
man what the fuck is this shit. there's three of these??

@chandler the only thing classic mode does is remove the story and the story units, the dungeon design is still the same as story mode's and it still has things like Grimoire's and such

@apocynadeae It's very subjective if the dungeon design from Untold is worse than the original (I would argue it is much better). While both Untolds has many controversial changes, I wouldn't add it to the list considering Atlus just rereleased the original three games, almost compeltely untouched on Switch. I don't really think they hurt the original game's reputation at all, they are just different experiences.

@Yata777 it's okay to be wrong. On a serious note it's not really relevant on if the dungeon design is "better" or "worse", rather just changing the dungeon design itself alongside the story mode and the grmioire system was a misstep in an attempt to retrofit a work for general audiences. I would add it because I have pretty vivid memories of havinv to explain to someone why Atlus would rather port the originals rather than the Untold games (great logic as "the untold games Fix the originals!)

And also the dungeon design is just worse lol

@apocynadeae gonna look more into it to make a fair call but thanks for bringing it up - i found untold 1 pretty dull (and i was always told not to bother with the original) so i wonder if the original will sway me at all

Has anyone mentioned Mario 3D Allstars yet? I haven’t played it myself but (aside from the limited time deal and outrageous pricetag AND Mario 64 already being on NSO) I’ve heard some pretty egregious complaints about remapped controls, inverted cameras, etc. with no customization options to fix them

that reminded me of Hitman: Blood Money Reprisal

because this game really needed stuff like Instinct Mode that much

Do the issues you mentioned with the Yakuza 3 remaster apply to the other remasters as well? Would it be better to emulate the original PS3 releases over playing the remasters?

@sugunii i haven't heard of any issues with y4 or y5. i can't fully confirm myself but i'm pretty sure it's just 3 that's fucked up

can you please remove kirby's extra epic yarn?

that remake doesn't cause damage because epic yarn has nothing to damage to begin with, thank you.

@Sugunii Y4 and Y5 have minor issues, mostly related to some minigames like pool where the controls are over-responsive compared to PS3 and one short sequence in 5, iirc. no broken AI like Y3, though.

Y4/Y5 remastered are basically more good than bad, and emulating the PS3 games is a goddamn pain due to crashes, so they're alright
Dont remove extra epic yarn (it is definitely worse and makes a great game sucky)

I would add BioShock Remastered and Mafia 2: Definitive Edition

something to note here about yakuza 3, the enemy ai is the exact same as it was on the ps3
the problem is with kiryu's quickstep being bugged which is as you know is one of kiryu's most powerful countermeasures to the blocking early on in the game and it was halved because of the new framerate but at least on PC it's fixable through a mod

Legend of Mana and Saga Frontier Remasters. One suffers from obligatory xbr filters, other has high resolution backgrounds contrasting pixelated sprites. And both suffer from mobile style menus with Arial font. The few gameplay additions don't payoff the bootleg feel.

Also Strange Journey Redux

@cappone_ceraio bioshock and mafia are subject to lighting changes, but they're the same game beneath that. not adding things that just rework lighting systems or whatever unless they completely take a sledgehammer to the art direction. this is about remakes that damage the original. if you play bioshock remastered you're still playing bioshock - it's just a little less well lit - nothing the average player will even acknowledge

@huss this is not correct

@heidennaugler similar response to bioshock/mafia. if i include things like this, then i'll be including damn near every remaster ever because they very rarely don't look at least a little bit worse. anyone who takes significant issue with legend of mana remastered isn't going to be interested in anything but the original experience

The Kingdom Hearts and Resident Evil cloud switch ports. Why were these made.

if Bioshock iOS is on here you may as well throw on Drakengard Mobile, still hilarious to me that it even exists

Your list is shit and misguiding.
Bully Scholarship Edition doesn't belong here. It's a definitive edition, not remake.
Persona PSP port is not a remake but a portable version, and to extent is superior version.
Persona 2 Innocent Sin is prequel to Eternal Punishment, and not a remake.
P3P is not a remake, it's portable version of Persona 3.

@druagord i would but i don't think they have their own entries on backloggd (rightfully so)

@pzt eh, bioshock ios actually plays like bioshock (arguably). drakengard mobile is a sidescroller you'd play on like, a blackberry. kinda disingenuous to go that far lmao

@motivateddude

1. the list's description clarifies that rereleases are included. bully scholarship edition is buggier than the original release, performs worse and has fucked lighting. "definitive editions" can be worse than the original releases. this is one such case

2. your logic towards persona psp not being a remake/remaster of the ps1 release is nonexistent and invalid. the games are different from each other. they play, look and sound differently. there's no debating this

3. persona 2 innocent sin is a prequel to persona eternal punishment. that is correct. what's your point? i included the psp remaster which completely neuters the difficulty of the ps1 game. are you unaware that there's a ps1 version?

4. again, if you read the list's description you would know that remasters and "enhanced ports" are included. either way, p3p DOES remake aspects of persona 3. it operates on a completely different battle system, it does not have anime cutscenes and it includes an entire route which changes every social link in the game

if you're going to insist on me being misguiding, then please at least have the courtesy to possess any idea at all as to what the hell you're even talking about

@chandler
"the list's description clarifies that rereleases are included."
"again, if you read the list's description you would know that remasters and "enhanced ports" are included."
Logic behind the name of list you made is non-existing and invalid. If you're making lists, be specific. This is not remakes list. It's just list of ports that you see as inferior.

damn I had no clue Bioshock was the whole game my bad

@motivateddude calm down no need to get insulting

@motivateddude this list includes more than strictly remakes because what distinguishes remakes, remasters and enhanced ports is subject to opinion and not always equally clear - as evidenced by your dumb ass thinking p1 psp and p3p are simply ports

the title refers specifically to remakes for the sake of brevity. if someone doesn't read the description and is confused (like yourself), then that's their fault

i don't know what bug crawled up your ass and i don't care if it upsets you. motivate yourself to acquire reading comprehension

PS1 Innocent Sin is not fuckin better lol

There's a better sense of difficulty sure and the menus are less clunky but that isn't accounting for everything else that makes it as equally unfun as the PSP ver.

Unskippable animations

Needing to manually setup fusion spells every single time (something you'll have to do a LOT more than the PSP ver cuz the game puts up a fight)

Slower walking speed

Translation is worse

Both versions are painful but for different reasons. Also that's ignoring the actually good things PSP adds:
Remastered OST + original

English Dub

Added content in the form of the movie quest things

The og ui is kinda ugly ngl, I hate the font the fan translation uses. PSP red solos.

I feel your note on Majora's Mask 3D, couldn't have said it better

@killbutt some fair enough points that i'll change it to a ymmv sort of thing, but cmon lmao - the remastered ost sucks and the vision quests dont add anything. those things are lazy as hell
IS PSP battle theme I prefer over the original ngl, dont know about the rest of the ost tho

@nowitsreyntime17 it's up to personal preference but i don't like the remastered ost at all. sounds too clean. removes a lot of the original atmosphere and doesn't fit in a ps1 game

ps1 school theme
psp school theme

i honestly don't have anything good to say about the remade soundtrack
Eh I dont find it that egregious considering I think those both sounds good, guess it just does come down to personal preference
