30 Day Video Game Music Challenge [2023]

A little late on this one. I didn't wanna reuse games I'd already used in my last list, so this ended up being a lot harder than I thought it would be.

2022 List

Following this: https://imgur.com/aGSVjXC

Day 1: Title Screen Music
"Old Snake"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ATzz3AhyH4
MGS4 is a game that gets some pretty justified complaints, but when it hits it hits and this title screen is perfect evidence of that.
Day 2: Opening Level Music
"Blue Water Fangs"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-GEthfnfOc
It's not as hype-inducing as Judgement from Metal Slug 2/X, but Metal Slug 3's frantic-sounding reimagining of the first game's Mission 1 music is really fun.
Day 3: 8-Bit Music
"Surface of SR388"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCIH943auRA
From what I've played, this is easily one of the best songs on the original GameBoy.
Day 4: Music From a Console Exclusive Series
"Koloktos/Moldarach"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tF2Gtdc_90
It's hard to not use a Nintendo game as a "console exclusive" considering how few games nowadays are genuinely exclusive to one brand of consoles. Not even sure if this game counts for this prompt since it's on two Nintendo consoles, but whatever. The Koloktos fight in Skyward Sword is one of the coolest boss fights in the series, and the dynamic music plays an enormous part in that.
Day 5: Hub World or Overworld Music
"Tsukudo-Cho"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wXi3QIK5bQ
A unique sound compared to other Megami Tensei music, but definitely a good one.
Day 6: Music that Makes You Feel Relaxed
"Dodo Airlines"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2esTACHnAGQ
Back when I was playing ACNH with friends, I'd love hanging out in the airport waiting for them to arrive on my island just so I could sit there and listen to this.
Day 7: Music from an Indie Game
"Wire"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cutjEzqMCQQ
I thought about including Hotline Miami, but OTXO's soundtrack is fully original music made for the game and is just as good.
Day 8: Music from a Shooter
"Inner Station"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4EUtGhyQl0
I didn't wanna use Metal Slug a second time on this list, but I barely play games that could be considered shooters and I'm too high to look for a better song to put here. The first Metal Slug game has my favorite soundtrack in the series, and this song is probably my favorite of the bunch.
Day 9: Music from a Licensed Game
"Big Boss"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMfLhDFT8Uk
I have no idea why they went so hard with this game's soundtrack, but I'm glad they did.
Day 10: RPG Battle Music
"I'll Give You Something Hot!"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tne2bK0oSqo
The song that plays during the fights against Leblanc's Doronjo-esque group in FFX-2 is my favorite battle theme in the Final Fantasy series.
Day 11: Puzzle Game Music
"Final Stage"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTaXvva_po4
Technically cheating since this is a reskinned version of the game I used on my 2022 list, but I wanted to use the other puzzle games I've played for different prompts on this list. This song is at least exclusive to this version of the game, so...
Day 12: Music that Makes You Sad
"Weight of the World/The End of YoRHa"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PslQESlD4xs
While I prefer the first NieR game, I think the credits sequence of Automata is one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen done in terms of player interaction in a video game. This song accompanies it, and manages to get me a little emotional every time I listen to it.
Day 13: Music You Like from a Game You Don't Like
"Hope Searching"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ-VFj-O9hQ
I wouldn't dislike this game if not for its ending, but this song accompanying much of the late game is still something I tend to come back to. Great soundtrack in general.
Day 14: Music Featuring Vocals
"Rock It On"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhcNnZxop74
ROCK THAT SHIT HOMIE (samples count as vocals right?)
Day 15: Boss Battle Music
"Boss Battle"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=He7YyGwXVBM
One of the best boss themes I've ever heard. The guitars coupled with the chanting clearly inspired by MONACA's previous work on the NieR games makes for a song that really makes boss fights feel important.
Day 16: 16-Bit Music
"Hydrocity Zone Act 2"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPYzgCI6Q1I
Yeah water levels usually suck in every other game, but Hydrocity Zone is such a good level with just as good music.
Day 17: Music You Never Get Tired Of
"Counterfeit Mermaids"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lhjh-rD8Bwc
Oh wow, another water level. Losing Jake Kaufman is catastrophic for the Shantae series in my eyes, the guy was pumping out nothing but bangers for every Wayforward game he worked on.
Day 18: Music in a Game Released the Year You Were Born
"Be Cool, Be Wild, and Be Groovy"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYp-i_SDOw8
Trying to avoid using too much Sonic on this list, but holy shit, this game came out the same year as Ocarina of Time? Anyway, this is my favorite song from the game. The horns really do a lot to make it memorable.
Day 19: Cover of Music by a Different Artist
"Someone to Watch Over Me"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVAg4l7Jl8Q
The majority of FSR's soundtrack consists of covers like this one, and it works really well as the game's soundtrack. "Someone to Hold Me Close" is one of my favorites, especially considering it accompanies the Toriko and Christina segments of the game.
Day 20: Music From a Racing Game
"Show Me Your Love"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q54HI-YGgcA
I only played this game because I heard TJ Davis (the singer from Sonic R) was on a handful of the tracks in the game. Not a bad game, but the music was its biggest appeal for me.
Day 21: Music You Associate with Frustration
"Andross Brain"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omwAgVzaL5M
I love Star Fox 64, but its true final boss is unreasonably annoying. The biggest challenge isn't anything the boss throws at you, it's maneuvering your way behind him to HOPEFULLY get a few shots at his weak spot. He moves too fast and takes annoyingly long to beat because of it.
Day 22: Town/Village Music
"Sleepless City Treno"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkA17QI1gSM
Treno was one of my favorite areas in FFIX. Lots of fun stuff going on, and nice music to go with it.
Day 23: Underrated Music
"Investigation"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ox_aveGuQM
"Underrated" in the sense that everyone knows Masafumi Takada for his Danganronpa music, but not his Silver Case music.
Day 24: Music You Constantly Have Stuck in Your Head
"Overworld Theme"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAaGKo4XVvM
I have no idea why this song is always stuck in my head since I haven't played this game in years, but I randomly find myself humming this song to myself really often.
Day 25: Music that Gets You Pumped
"SA DA ME"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4AzBzjDj4g
For such a cute rhythm game, they did not need to go this hard, but I'm definitely not complaining. This song FUCKS.
Day 26: Music You Like from a Game You Haven't Played
"We Are Burning Rangers"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHlrHvt1dUE
This song alone is enough to make me wanna play this game. Shout out to Marlon Saunders, who also did the singing for Knuckles' theme in Sonic Adventure.
Day 27: Music From a Handheld Game
"Dangerous Guys"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teHudmqbPxk
I love Mother 3's rhythm-based battle mechanics, and love this funky little song.
Day 28: Music that Makes You Nostalgic
"Powell"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7COZ6AQUtU
This was the first game I ever emulated. Still need to play the remake, but in the original, this song was always the most memorable.
Day 29: Final Boss Music
"Modern Girl 2010"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADiNRLn16ec
Thought it would be funny to choose this song, since it's a remix of the opening level music prompt I used in my 2022 list. Don't judge the title of the game too hard lmao, it's a really fun (and difficult) platformer and not whatever you're probably thinking it is.
Day 30: Credits Music
"Ode to Joy"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PnhwE8ujKk
I really couldn't be less interested in listening to classical music, but Shoji Meguro kills it every time. Great cover, if you can even call it one.
