Solid game. But I want to vent about some stuff.
First of all, the combat. I played this game on my PC, using KB&M. Wow that was a mistake. The “techniques” were super awkward and barely even worked. Other than that, some of the final bosses had such weird janky moves that were pretty much undodgable unless you can see the future. I did the true ending, and the last boss specifically was a tanky and janky mess for a good portion of it.
My other major complaint was how… unintuitive… the design can be. I’ve played my fair share of metroidvanias, and have pretty much beat most of them without guides. This one had me so lost at two certain sections that I had to search it up. I thought the answers would be obvious, but no, they were fucking stupid. I saw a lot of people complaining about the exact same thing as well, and it made me feel a bit better that I wasn’t going crazy for thinking it was dumb. I wasted 3 hours of my 19 hour run because of this.
Overall though, it’s a solid game. The art is good, the map is very fun to explore and the number of abilities and weapons is super awesome. There are two abilities in this game that really stood out to me as unique, and I really appreciated that. It was a good game, but not something I’d write home about.

This is what gaming is all about, man.

What a fun ride. This game is just so much fun, it’s impossible to ever stop smiling. Fun the whole way through. Never drops a beat.
The gameplay is literally crack. I could not get enough of it. I will continue to play the optional post story content just to play more. Perfect combo. Sometimes I enter the groove and I am a rhythm master. I love it.
The story is nothing to write home about but the writing and characters are so perfectly charming that I didn’t care. Chai is so lovable. Also, this game is actually funny af
The art style… sigh… it’s peak… the presentation is just amazing. So many little details, little animations that change and move in accordance to the beat. It was literally like watching a Saturday morning comfort cartoon.

I’d say the last two bosses became so complex that it was a bit hard to follow their moves, be it in sight or sound. But whatever. It was just so good man.

2018

I think Hades comes close to being a perfect game…?
Every time I think about it, I can’t find any flaws with it. I’m not saying it’s the greatest game of all time, but it’s one of the few games that does everything WELL.

Gameplay: addicting. It’s literally a drug. You can experiment with so many weapon combos, it’s pretty much limitless. and the bosses are great too.
Graphics/art: gorgeous. Environments are detailed and distinct. Character design is super sick.
Story and characters: surprisingly really good. Every time I died I was excited to hear more from Achilles, Thanatos, Meg, among other characters.
Replayability: it’s a rogue like lol. But because they can, they added the pact of pain, which was beaten for the first time EVER like a month ago.

I think my biggest problem with the game is that eventually I did everything and got tired of it. I think other games reached higher peaks for me, but this one is just so consistent it’s crazy.

Can’t wait for hades 2!!

Nintendo are a bunch of wizards if I’m being fr.
BOTW is a special game. It took the gaming world by storm when it came out; it’s approach to open world design is now a standard that a lot of developers follow. It is an important game.
This game makes BOTW feel like a tech demo.
THIS is what this world, this engine is capable of.
All the new abilities in this game are so genius that it hurts. How did they make it work?? Without completely breaking the game? On a console that is as strong as my iPhone? In less that 16 gigabytes? This game is a technical marvel.
Enough about that, lemme talk about the game. Obviously, Link’s new abilities are amazing. Unlike BOTW where you would rather save your cool weapons and not want to fight tough enemies, this game introduces FUSE! Enemies grant you better rewards based on how tough they are! They fixed the durability issue without removing it. HOW?
Rewind and Ascend are so insanely overpowered but not in a “badly designed” way but in a “if you are creative enough this has infinite possibilities” way. It’s genuinely crazy.
Ultrahand… is Ultrahand. I’m not adding another 500 words just to talk about UH.
The new bosses and dungeons are also so much better. They are actually unique and not different skins of the same shit. Although, I wish this game was harder. None of the bosses gave me any trouble, even if they were awesome. Oh and they should remove building when inside the dungeons. The fire temple became way better when I couldn’t just fly around.
The new areas are… a bit disappointing. It is very ironic how I was very excited for the sky islands and (once I found them in game) the depths, but in the end the surface had the most new content lol.
I LOVED the quest regarding the band! The election in Hateno village was so fun. And there were other cool highlights on the surface too, but I’d rather not talk about them all.
If only the other two areas had this much love… they could’ve at least changed the location of some surface side quests to the other 2 areas…
There were 2 awesome side quest in the underground, but that’s it. Also, it all looks the same. They could’ve at least changed the colors of the rocks for different biomes lol… The armor sets, mines and coliseums were cool as well. But we could’ve had a whole new race of people down there, whole towns man.
The sky islands were 70% the same fucking shrine puzzle. The other 30% was sick though.
I should say, Shrines are way better in this game. Some of them are actually not for babies, and pose actual good challenges!
The combat is another major gripe I have with this game. Why the FUCK is it the exact same thing. Literally. Even the animations have not changed. It’s good combat, but they couldn’t have added at least another weapon class???? A Knife???? Scythe????? Whip???? ANYTHING??????
Also, the story is much better than BOTW. Actually, it WOULD have been better than BOTW if we were forced to see the memories in ORDER! Why can we see people DIE on accident?!?!?! I hate it! The final memory also should be locked until after a certain main story mission! I saw the secret memory 50 hours in and all the mystery was gone!!!!!

Now to the most important part. The ending of a game sells it for me. I played a solid 190 hours of this game, and I avoided spoilers. However, I had seen tweets of people saying “this ending changed me.” So when I finally decided to finish the game. And
Holy fucking shit.
Soundtrack was incredible. Fight was incredible. An absolute 2 hour spectacle. Just insane. One of the best endings I have seen in a game. Almost got a tear out of me. Worth it just for the ending.

In conclusion, I have a lot of opinions on this game, hence the long review. Nintendo is so silly cause some of these problems could’ve been so easily fixed. But whatever. Still an awesome achievement!

First thing I wanted to say is that the hate this game gets is so forced bruh. A lot of people say it’s just a movie but literally no? Lmfao. I played on gimme a challenge and it kicked my ass a good amount of times.

Anyway. Wow. Okay so GoW 2018 was a very personal story with some epicness and world building and set up. But it was about Kratos and Atreus.
This game is still about them, but the plot is not just “get to the mountain and spread the ashes.” Now the plot is “there is a war happening and your allies are gathering also your son is getting huge power ups also there are conspiracies also there are civil wars and also you’re being hunted and also you gotta step it up.”
Somehow, it all works though.
The core is still Kratos and Atreus. The first game was simple so this could go crazy.
Since the story has expanded so much. We get to know more characters intimately. Sindri, Brok, Freya, Mimir, and… Tyr… all are flawed and layered and grow as people!

The story goes into ALL realms, and I should say, the art direction is mesmerizing, especially in the PS5. Every world is unique and DISTINCT! I loved Vanaheim so much. All the different sections of that world were so cool. Svartfalheim as well. Can’t say much about Asgard but I also loved how it looked.

I really can’t talk about the story since I don’t like spoilers, but there was only two parts of the story where I felt like it dragged: with the future seeing ladies, Angrboda’s trip through memory lane ig… But the plot twists and story beats all hit for me. There is one part of the story that genuinely made me gasp out loud. I felt so stupid and I was so angry, and the scene was beautifully shot. Felt like theatre… And the things afterwards almost made me cry.

The combat is so much fun. The builds felt a bit too rpg for me but whatever. All the weapons you get feel so SATISFYING TO USE! The effects, the controller rumble, the animations, all so good! My fav weapon is a spoiler, but man it’s so so fun to use. There’s also something you discover early on which… changes the gameplay. People didn’t like those parts, I heard. I disagree, they were a good change of pace, and it felt so different!
The bosses also SLAP!!!! I have no idea why people were saying 2018 has better bosses? WHAT? Yeah Baldur’s slapped but this one had like 3 on that level for me. The final part of this game genuinely felt like avengers endgame type shit. So much build up, I was worried it was not gonna live up to its own hype, but it did. An incredible spectacle with great conclusions to its characters.

The side quests were also actually good. This game’s version of the Valkyries are mid, especially the one where you fight 3 at once. What the FUCK was that. But the side missions involving our dead wife were sick. I loved the hunting quests. Dragons are so sick in this game.

I find it difficult to say a bad thing about this game. It did most things VERY WELL, including voice acting and music too(The Hozier song slaps).
This game is just so great. Probably the best sony exclusive of the ps5. Jk it’s also on the PS4 LOL! Ps5 has no games

Miyazaki my beloved… he does it again…

Every time FromSoftware cooks a dark fantasy game, I am reminded of the fact that Gaming is possibly the best medium for fantasy in general. Games and books tbh.
Anyway. What can I really say that hasn’t been said? It’s fucking FromSoft. Best bosses in the business, best atmosphere of any triple A studio, incredible soundtrack, mesmerizing art direction. There are unforgettable moments like… sprinkled through the whole fucking game. Like it’s candy. Do you have any idea how good of a game you have to be for a fucking elevator to be one of the most memorable moments of this gaming generation?
The gripes I have with this game are because I 100% it. Repeat mini bosses. A lot of repeats. If I see another erdtree avatar or worm I will commit unspeakable acts. The catacombs were mostly copy and pasted with minor differences. There were a few memorable ones, like the teleporting chests one.
We needed more cave systems, those were sick. Also unpopular opinion I guess but the hero graves were fucking amazing. Hard as balls and tense with that insta kill chariots… it felt like actual dungeons and not shitty little copy pasted catacombs.
Up to Leyndell (btw, best area in all of fromsoft, same level as Yharnam), this game was pretty much flawless. Then Mountaintops of the reskinned enemies happened! Boring ass area with no unique enemies no dungeon no nothing! One horrible main story boss! Consecrated snowfield was better but optional.
Farum Azula was the “we’re so back” moment. The boss rush at the very end could’ve been paced better but with the level of quality of the bosses I can’t really complain (except the very last one fuck Elden beast should’ve had Torrent).
The Haligtree and Elphael also suffered from the mountaintop treatment of mostly reskinned enemies. Some unique knights ig. But the area itself was so lore important and beautiful, and the atmosphere so amazing I didn’t mind it. Also Malenia.

The last negative I hear people mention is the fact this game isn’t as fun on the second play through since it’s so big. But like, that’s just open world games. Idk. It was tailored for that first experience I feel. The other souls games are meant to be played a million times cause when you get how it works you can blitz through them. This one is meant to give the greatest first run ever. And it was. Can’t blame the game for it if it was made this way

The positives are too obvious I don’t want to make this even longer. Amazing build variety, bosses, level design, music, combat, voice acting, endings, secrets, exploration, yada yada yada. Yeah it’s fucking Miyazaki we all know.

But yeah Elden Ring 10/10. 4th fav game of all time. Can’t wait for Shadow of the Erdtree to change my life

Ok so this game is good. Great even! It’s similar to Disco Elysium and Fata Morgana where there isn’t gameplay per se, it’s more of an interactive story. The writing is good, there are cool choices and consequences, etc etc. I’m pissed off about something in particular though

I was like 10 hours in. Did a lot of cool things. I was almost done with the dlc stuff too. Had good friends, finished pretty much most of the quests, and was happy with the outcomes of 80% of them. Anyway, I was doing this quest about spoiler and as I was reading stuff got really fucking weird and I DIED?????? I literally just died I think? The game ended! I had no clue this quest with NO action or danger would just randomly end my game bruh. This actually made me irrationally angry lmfao. Anyway 3 stars. Cool I guess

I got this game cause it was free on PS catalogue… and because the completionist hyped it up… ummm… I guess he didn’t lie about this game being good! Too bad he lied about stealing money tho! I wonder how the developers will remove the constructionist….

Anyway. Wow what a fun game. This was genuinely a surprise hit for me. I never really played Chrono Trigger, but playing this made me get it. The world, the music, the appealing pixel art, the epic fantasy story in an actual unique setting and not just fantasy world with demon king number 16264738.
The two main characters are whatever. They’re like self inserts. Trained to he heroes. But the other characters in your party are actually good (except the last one but I get that we needed another one to make the party stronger after story beats).
I grew to care about Garl and other spoilers a lot! And the story had plot twists that actually GOT ME. Like, stuff that I genuinely was not expecting at all happened!
The big negative I have is the true ending. The game is not long and it does not require grinding at all. By the endgame, I was fully capable of defeating the hardest optional bosses normally (they were difficult, as they should be since they are hidden bosses, but doable) and I didn’t grind for XP once! You grow naturally!
Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that you can do pretty much everything this hame has to offer without having to waste obscene amounts of time with stupid shit.
There is something that happens at the end of the game, where it asks you to do everything in order to achieve the true ending… the thing is, I had done 7/8 of the activities because the game was so fun and engaging. The last thing though… pissed me off. I was supposed to collect 40 more secret hidden items around the whole fucking world of the game. I was 37 hours into the game when I discovered this. I said fuck it and stopped playing, and watched the ending on YouTube. It is such a shame such a good ending is locked behind shitty item collecting. The other 7 things made sense, it was actual important side missions and character stories that could be missed. But really? Hidden items? I hated that.

Anyway, rant over. This game is great and worth playing. It just pissed me off

This game, mechanically speaking, is an upgrade of the first one. In every way. I thought movement couldn’t get better. I was wrong! Web swinging is once again one of the most fun things in gaming period (with swing assist removed and fall damage on!). Switching through the two Spider-Men feels great, but I wish they didn’t have the essentially the same specials but with different animations. It would be better if they had abilities unique to them individually, rather than both having an answer to everything. The combat is the same but literally better with more complexity. I do have to say the visual cues are a bit difficult to follow at times (especially in the highest difficulty). The boss fights were actually good and fun and not instantly forgettable! Won’t say names but there’s at least 3 of them I would love to fight again. The side quests were also so good. Some of them were better than the main story! Big upgrade from streamer trolls of the first game! Also, this game is finally actually challenging. Thanks insomniac.

Ok now the negatives. Um. Yeah the story is mid. I don’t want to get into spoilers but. Didn’t like how rushed some of the things were. The ending was underwhelming. There was set up for the next villain and it was ass. The two main bad guys had potential. But in the end, the og Spider-Man PS4 had a perfect Spider-Man story with a perfect villain and perfect ending that legitimately made me cry. This didn’t make me feel emotional at all. And I love Spider-Man. Meh.

Some of the main story missions were hype as fuck tho. If you know you know

My gosh this game is so fun.
The story and lore really didn’t click for me. I’ve only played Super Metroid, maybe that’s why.
Also, I never was lost in this game. This may sound weird to complain about not getting lost, but this is a Metroidvania. One of the joys of this genre is getting lost, going somewhere completely different, and finding 3 new npcs, 2 new areas, 5 mini bosses, 1 new ability, and a new skin, ALL BECAUSE YOU WERE LOST AND LOOKED SOMEWHERE ELSE. Dread is finely tuned to NOT make you lost at all. I guess the positive was that I never really stopped playing main game stuff. But the joy of not-tailored exploration is gone. To me, that’s a negative
That’s the negatives out of the way. Man this game is just SOOOOOOO FUN TO PLAY. Every ability every movement adds to this rhythm that I can’t explain. The combat is amazing and the BOSSES are SICK AS FUCK!!!! Man some of them kicked my ass and I liked it!!!! Samus is so cooooool!!!!
The platforming was so so good I love jumping and dashing and all of that. And the EMMIs (I think this is an unpopular take) are so great. They actually genuinely made me terrified, and it takes actual skill to get past them/beat them. This game really is difficult but fair, and I love that.

This game is very similar to outer wilds. Not in aesthetic, not in vibe, not in gameplay. It’s similar in the way that this game offers an experience that could NOT be offered in any other medium (or at least, not as effectively).
I don’t like spoiling games, so I won’t talk much about this, since spoiling ruins the fun! :) But the story messes you up in a lot of fun ways.
The atmosphere is thick, it’s oppressive; every little thing about it combines to make you feel like you’re in a horror movie. It is amazing.
I have issues with certain sections of the game that I feel dragged a bit. And some wasted potential. Part of me wanted to make this game longer because I wanted to play… other ways… but also no! This game drags!
Anyway, not everyone’s cup of tea but it is certainly mine.

Fun Metroidvania with incredible art direction. Probably one of the best I’ve ever seen tbh.
Just didn’t vibe a lot with the combat and platforming. With most metroidvanias (Metroid, Hollow Knight, Ori, etc), movement is just as fun as the combat. Here it was… functional. This made the platforming significantly more boring for me.
The other big Metroidvania things it did well. Good diverse levels. Memorable boss fights (some designs were nightmarishly amazing, this aesthetic ROCKS!!!!), a bunch of secrets and hidden lore. (I missed on a lot of these but I didn’t like the game enough to replay it and get them all.) A lot of good held back by the fact that I’m a sucker for good movement lmaooo
Regardless, on an artistic level, this game is incredible and worth playing just for that

Playing this after persona 5 was a detriment to this game.
In my opinion, this game’s story is better than persona 5’s story. The characters are also better in general. However, in most other aspects, 5 is just better. It’s more fun to play as a whole.
I feel like if I played this first, it would’ve been a 5 stars. But by playing the most recent one first, I came into this game with bias.

“The Lieutenant trusts you +1
He truly trusts you. +2”

Some of the best writing I have seen in video games, period.
This game is so incredibly mature and nuanced with its themes… there were times where I felt dumb playing it (this is a good thing).
The protagonist + Kim Kitsuragi has got to be one of my fav dynamics ever. Just love seeing these two guys doing anything.
The political commentary, the symbolism, the soundtrack, the art style, the game systems, the voice acting, the story, the CHARACTERS… DE is just mesmerizing. It’s a shame ZA/UM is having problems.

Also, Cuno> your fav

Quite simply one of the greatest artistic achievements of the medium. Changed my life. Every single aspect of this works together to make one absolutely unforgettable experience. Which is a positive, and a negative, because I will never be able to play this again.

It offers a very specific experience. If this is not for you, you will not get it at all. If it is… oh boy
