i'm not too into this game but this is the only game my older brother will ever speedrun and watching him play it is legendary

Iggy would have been the worst pattern for a Cuphead boss.

Slippery game with a fast character, scrolling stage, and my ears shrilling when I jump. It's also very easy to lose progress just by an enemy contacting your trail which sucks. It's a risk/reward for scoring, but not one I have as much control over than I feel like I should.

The song is still in my head, but if you're putting BGM in your levels and changing the visuals, you could have at least had more than one song.

Update: Upon playing the Master System version I've gained a bit more appreciation for this game, so its score is going up from its original 2 stars. I found enjoyment out of the core mechanics of Flicky that I've grown to appreciate and it speaks volumes as to how an opinion of a game can change over time and understanding more about games in general. Thanks Flicky.

(Played in SEGA MEGADRIVE CLASSICS, on Nintendo Switch)

I've always enjoyed this one. Never got to finish it before, but finally did. It's really fun, but way too hard cause of the weird movements (no shame in admitting that I had to use the rewind feature at least two times). That main score really slaps though.

An underrated early arcade gem and very tricky to play.

I adore this so much I own an arcade cabinet! If you're in the UK you can play it at Arcade Club, Bury, Greater Manchester.

It's deterministic (no randomness) so you can figure out a repeatable route and turn playing into a zen experience. Controls use leaf switches so feel very analogue.

The Mega Drive version is a decent port but not 1:1 to the arcade original, so I find it slightly lacking.

Noise terrorism with an anti-cat agenda. Foundational for me.

It's a game where you save chicks from the cats, and that is the only thing that matters. We got the mother of the year right here. Although, it doesn't keep my attention for too long, and it can get a little annoying.

Game #45

whyis this like the best game ever nmde

this backloggd's cover it's awful lmao

The game you spend all of 2 minutes playing on Sonic Mega Collection before getting bored and moving onto one of the actual Sonic games

(sonic's ultimate genesis collection 14/40)

what the hell do you want me to say about flicky

All I can really say about Flicky is that it could be a good arcade game, however it has a whole bunch of major frustrations that unfortunately hold it back from it's potential of being a simple yet fun experience like most arcade games.

The most notable issues are how this game suffers really badly from it's slippery controls and poorly designed stages. Your weird sliding momentum could be easily handled with on simple assortments of straightaway platforms, but when all of the corners, steps, and alcoves formed by the walls come into the equation, you start seeing how detrimental the controls can be. All of the bouncing off of the walls you're going to be doing by simply trying to maneuver around the stage gets old very fast and immensely annoying when you have to worry about all the enemies you have to weave around as well.

Yes, you also have to dodge around cats and iguanas in the process of gathering all of your chirps and rushing them back to the start. While it makes sense to have a threat to your goal, it's really difficult to make your way around them simply because of your movement. And in all of these odd stage layouts I often had times where I would have several of their patterns overlap in a way that created immensely difficult to handle situations, especially so when that damn iguana enemy is around since it’s allowed to climb on the walls to chase you down and is still allowed to damage you while doing so. The objects you use to take them out only do so much as you often waste them by jumping to higher areas and you can’t use them to hit something right behind you due to your extensive turnaround. (Trust me, that happened to me more often than I would’ve liked) Also I seem to see where Sonic 3D Blast got the whole “enemies scattering the required collectables on contact” mechanic. I didn’t like it there and I don’t like it here either.

However, even with all of these issues I had, I’d say they make this just an okay arcade game though. It’s still fun in a simple way like an arcade game should be, but it’s just disappointing how all of these issues just add up and prevent this from being something better. I still wonder why SEGA chose this guy to be apart of the Sonic canon, though.

A really simple arcade game that's not really good or bad. Just exists in the nexus. These things are in Sonic 3D blast. That's all I need to know.

i cant wrap my head around how good movement feels in this game for how old it is. feels so damn good.

A decent arcade game that many people probably found through Sonic or some Sega compilations. It's fun but you've seen everything you need to after a couple minutes.

Technically, it counted for my marathon and it honestly was pretty fun. Nothing amazing, just a standard old arcade game but felt pretty addicting

Imagine being such an irrelevant game that your main character is remembered for being a background character in a bigger series moreso than anything from their actual game

It puts on a difficult game, I don't remember if it has an ending but I played it during my childhood and adolescence.

wow, I actually made it to the end of this game. Really satisfying to play and infinitely replayable to get a higher and higher score. Because the game levels are one screen big and loop infinitely, you always know where everything is and where you need to go. The controls are also floaty yet smooth and precise, and the levels are designed in a way that rewards speed and mastery of said control style. It just clicks with me, I guess. Definitely one of my favorite games on the mega drive and I constantly have kept coming back to it to top my high scores for the past like over 10 years honestly.

Played as a kid.

Don't let the cuteness distract you. This game is HARD.

Also if you get a very high score you get to see a pixel woman dancing on a screen. I'm as confused as you are about that.

The department-store and luxury-hotel backdrops give it a sort of "kids movie" charm. The gameplay is simultaneously rock-solid and hard to imagine how someone came up with. A true arcade classic in that way.

Sonic Frontiers should have just had Sonic play Flicky instead of Pinball.
