this is game 13/71 from my backlog

surprisingly enjoyable, simple collectathon platformer, and free at that. the whole theme of the game getting prettier the further in you get is really nice, and gives reason to go back to levels you had already done. the movement is also generally tight, with the exception honestly being just the high jump you get early on, vertical movement is nice, but after you get the double jump you only need it for very few occasions, if i had to criticize anything, is that the last graphics mode has too many things obstructing your image, makes it harder to navigate specially if there's a sun in the area you're in, otherwise, this is a cute little game with a cute little plot and a lot of early gaming references, if it got expanded i believe it would be a 4/5 game.

this is game 12/71 on my backlog

this is a short one, but it's cute, it's in the same i guess genre of game as something like, superliminal, it does have puzzles but with the exception of one they're all pretty easy, not a hard game and i'd say it does what it sets out to do, the only bad part is that the color scheme kind of hurts to look at, other than that, it's alright.

this is game 11/71 form my backlog.

THIS SUCKS!

i mean, it doesn't but, holy shit there's so many things that make me not want to enjoy this game, but it's hard to ignore the positives

i'll start with the good: Artstyle is adorable newgrounds/early internet stuff, i'll be honest, i'm too young to remember that era, but i did somewhat grow up with it due to the games i played, surprised i never came across this one when i was younger, but still, it's nice seeing all the parodies and references, along with the original stuff that matt likely made simply because he thought they were cool.
the battle system is actually really nice, and basically every move is animated, the bursts specially are insanely cool to watch even if they are rudimentary, you get to choose party order mid fight, and you can also change equipment mid fight, the second one i didn't find much use for, but i'm certain someone has. exploration is highly incentivized, which i wish i realized earlier because i missed out on "dispel" which is a move that removes the buffs from your enemy, until much later than i should, oh well, my bad, remember to do the sidequests, they give you items that are extremely useful for the later game. This game is also very stable, i can't say i saw a single bug in my entire playthrough, not that i was looking for them though.

time for the bad: every single boss, all of them, all of them are horrible, plus the dificulty spike too, the difficulty curve in this game should be called a difficulty 90 degree wall, because that's what it felt to reach the desert, the plains and water areas were fine, if not the battles a bit too long, even the ice area wasn't too bad, though i had to use a poison strat to beat the wooly otherwise there was no way i would be able to advance, the bosses in this game are just stupid, they always are about as strong as you, which you'd think would make for a fair fight, but usually it doesn't, so there you go leave the fight to spend a few hours looking for equipment specifically for that fight, to then take about 1 hour of just genuine jrpg battling, that's another thing, the battles in this game go for way too goddamn long, even using optimal strats for damage, it feels like i'm barely scratching them at all, it's just very frustrating.

one other thing that makes the boss fights even worse is that this game has some kind of fetish for one-shot moves, sometimes you'll be doing perfectly fine, fully buffed, heals ready, then boom, natallie just got one shot by some random attack and now you need to spend 7 turns rebuffing (would be 3 but the enemies will keep unbuffing you), this is definitely at it's worst at the final boss, where there's always at least 2 enemies that can kill you, making death immunity a must.

overall, i can't say i didn't have fun, despite the fights being weirdly long, and them not feeling like a fair fight at all, the game always brought me at least some joy in playing it, so i can't be too harsh on the thing, and the jokes were hilarious too, so, it's a game that mostly gets carried by it's charm, but damn, that charm is effective as hell.

2018

my face when i beat this by accident today

gorn is a real fun game, that just lacks a lot of polish, killing enemies feels good and fun, the cartoony gore of course adding a lot to that fun, but damn, some of these weapons are just NOT IT man, anything that's two handed (with some exceptions) is just a no go, too cumbersome to use and just... too weak.

there is a bit of story and lore, it's elaborated upon at all but that's fine, it's just there to give you something to do, and honestly, i found myself really getting immersed into the role of a gladiator, i did in fact scream at the top of my lungs after every single battle

if i had to complain about anything that isn't the lack of polish and the controls (both of which i can excuse due to this being an early VR title), would be the final boss fight, which took me 50 minutes to realize you have to throw the heads that are incoming towards you into the boss, which by the way is very hard. feels like playing tennis but, worse.

also as a side note, this is the first game i've played that does not have any loading screens at all, except maybe for when launching the game, it just, fades to black, unfades to gameplay, which might be a genuine advantage into making me choosing to play this over blade and sorcery or something

very fun game.

2019

this is game 10/71 out of my backlog, and boy, what a game to get to double digits with

i'll be talking about each chapter seperately, except for one and two which i'll group together because they feel as similar

so, knee deep in the dead and the shores of hell, are both amazing, this is DOOM, i get it, the music is great, it's a classic, shit, i didn't even care that this game is so old i can't look up and down, running is fast, your shotgun is strong, and these demons are meant to be gibbed, doomguy's expressions and just general gameplay really do make you feel like a powerhouse, not saying that the game is braindead though, the level design is actually very intricate and requires at least enough thought to the point where you are thinking but not to the point where you're stressing out, so, really it's just amazing

inferno, the third chapter, is garbage. the first level is not too bad, but everything after it is, it's mazes on top of mazes, with extremely confusing and disorientating layouts, i didn't have to look a walkthrough for any of the rest of the game, but i HAD to three times here, it really does not respect the player's time at all, the difficulty itself isn't too bad, i just don't like running around a map that's empty because i already killed everything

now for thy flesh consumed, it's ok, it's not AS good as episodes 1 and 2, but it's nowhere NEAR as bad as episode 3, it has pretty serviceable level design, feels nice to play on, though the ending was a bit anti-climatic, i know there WAS a boss fight but i was kinda hoping to kill satan or something, oh well.

overall, doom is at it's best when you're blasting through levels at lightning speed while obliterating every demon with your arsenal of weapons, all of which i felt were useful, except for the gatling gun and pistol, both of which just, never seemed to do enough damage somehow

oh, also, hitscan enemies are annoying, that's all

this is game 9/71 on my backlog

i am not a car fan, i don't like driving, or driving games, but holy shit, this game is just goddamn mean

from a technical standpoint, for it's age, it looks good, and drives realistically, though i don't know why having a tire burst makes my car always drift to the right no matter which tire bursts

the rallies are fun enough, shit, i could even go mindless and i could easily complete them, and get between 6th-4th, which was good enough fun for me, but HOLY SHIT the races are just... horrible! why is the AI like this? actually, why is anything like this? everyone has the same car, seemingly the same settings and everything, and you have a "joker" turn which is a slower turn that you HAVE to take at least once

THAT SUCKS. By having everyone have the same car, it means that, one mistake, one misuse of the joker turn, one slightly bad turn and IT'S OVER, you're not getting past them again, unless they make a mistake, WHICH THEY DON'T.

so yeah, it's just infuriating, but, i suppose it's not that bad, i played with a controller, did most of the races, but it's not like this game has an ending or anything so i just... didn't care about the more expensive ones, i'll consider this complete, sorry, this game isn't fun for me and i'm unable to grasp the weirder concepts like the engineers and team management, it was okay though, maybe i should stick to arcade racing games, those are just more fun.

this is game 8/71 of my backlog
it's 00:18 as i write this

this game disapointed me severely, if i'm being honest. i heard so many people say it was one of the hardest games of all time, i beat this in under a week, and with a play time of 26 hours.

now, to be fair, yes, it was hard, specially the first parts of the game, but from inkwell island 3 beyond, it's surprisingly easy, i saw myself beating all bosses in 10-15 tries, i didn't take even a quarter of the time i took in the first half of the game to beat the second half, i also did all this while only ever using the default shot, and the extra heart charm, i never felt the need for the others so, yeah

i'd like to compliment this game where i can, before i dig into it, i'm gonna be honest, my heart wants to give this game a 2, but the amount of love i feel coming from it, i can't help but give it 3 stars, the artstyle is, of course, amazing. i'm not gonna indulge too much into that because everyone knows about it, some of the bosses, have SOME parts that are really well choreographed, and are just greatly designed in general, this game isn't AS much about quick reflexes as it is multi-tasking, or just switching your attention to other things very fast, that's all i can say of good of it, which is definitely more than what i can say for some other games so, cuphead ain't that bad

now for the bad, music. this is a hot take, i know, but i think the music for this game sucks, it never fits the mood, makes me slightly irritated despite being a chill guy when it comes to raging in games, in fact the only time i "raged" during this game was during king dice, which, in retrospect, isn't that hard, i'm just dumb.

the run and gun stages... they all are horrible, no exceptions, while the bosses in general are pretty alright, the run and gun stages are just messed up, for some reason this game has a fetish for spawning and despawning enemies just off screen, specifically where you can't see them, it's annoying to be doing everything well only to get hit by a fish you couldn't have possibly known was coming.

as for the bosses, IN GENERAL they're all good, but i feel like all of them have at least ONE bullshit move, that i'm always praying they don't use, my winning runs are usually the ones they don't.

and the last thing i have to complain is that... it doesn't feel very polished, which is where this game being indie shows the most, connecting a controller, despite it having native controller support, was hell for me, it just decided to not pick it up, and then pick it up, but inverse my joystick, and then it worked perfectly one day, and then it gave up on that and i couldn't pause through the controller anymore, awesome, anyways, another thing is, despite the movement being pretty simple, and seemingly tight, sometimes it just, DOESN'T WORK, i move left, dash, and MY BOY CUPHEAD DASHES RIGHT?? sometimes i special left, with him LOOKING LEFT, AND HE ATTACKS DIAGONALLY RIGHT, SERIOUSLY HOW DID THIS HAPPEN (IT GOT ME KILLED 3 TIMES)

anyways, it's ok, if this is your favorite game or something, i can see why, but idk, expected more from how much people praised it.

this is game 7/71 of my backlog!

i finally beat this, damn, feels weird
cry of fear is kind of insane in the fact that, it exists, a beautifully made horror game, in the goldsource engine, made by like what 8 people? for free??

this game is good, very good. For the engine? beautiful, masterful use of it's limitations and even goes a little beyond at times, i'll never forget the lake near the end or the maze of arms

the game is mean, but it's a good attitude for a horror game to have, it shouldn't just be spooky, it needs to be threatening "i don't WANT to leave my heals behind to take this key, but... i don't have a choice" giving players the illusion of choice is a great design decision in a horror game because it leads to more anxiety

if anything i wish the game was a little more selective with it's enemy placements, but overall it wasn't that bad at all

the story is also... well, i'm not gonna get into details but, it is something close to me, i'll probably have to go through something similar to what simon goes through eventually so, it's good to have a clear view of how i should approach it, stories matter a lot to me and this is a good story.

this game deserves a remake, from the ground up, fixing the little issues that it currently has like lack of customizable resolutions, and whatnot

overall a masterpiece and an amazing showing of what a small passionate team can put out, this was better than a lot of other things i've played, very spooky.

played this one a long as time ago, wish i had gone in blind, this game hits a lot harder if you do

2019

this is game 6/71 of my backlog

this was a short, adorable free game, though i wanna preface with saying that it recommends you play with a controller, which i just do NOT agree with at all, the controls are way better with mouse (even though a little inconsistent)

the pixel art is insanely beautiful and the Chinese inspiration is bountiful and nice, specially to me who just, really likes China related stuff
gameplay is pretty cool overall, just, a little clunky to use the powers

atma is kind of an asshole tho, play the game yourself to figure out why

2021

this is game 5/71 from my backlog!

well, this was short.
i suppose i could've gotten the other endings, but i just got ending 2 and said bye bye, this game is very cool, i guess, but it doesn't have too much going for it other than being another rpgmaker horror game, of which there are better ones out there, not that this one is bad or anything

funnily enough, i played this game long ago, and from there i started following the artist, so it is cool to see their artwork in a game, even if it's an average game.

also, the character portrait for the security guard looks goofy af

i don't remember when i played this, but i do remember it being pretty damn amazing, it's even on my favorites on steam, i used it as wallpaper on my pc for a long time so... despite me not remembering much, it must've been good as hell

This is game 4/71 of my backlog!
This is also the only VR game on my backlog, which is probably good considering my right controller's B button stopped working when playing this, ig I'll have to wait till next year to get a quest 3

I'd like to separate this review into two sides: technical and actual gameplay

I'll start with the technical side:

This sucks. All the textures are extremely low resolution, the models seem to have been taken directly from the pcvr version, but then thrown into blender's decimate feature and spit out like that, you can specially see this in the plushies and in the ending where there's polygons where they really shouldn't be.
Lighting is indeed atmospheric, but it looks damn bad.
Now, I do have to remind myself, this was released on the quest 1, not the quest 2 (which still doesn't excuse the bad graphics considering this port had a HUGE development time) but like... Why haven't they released a quest 2 upgrade? Actually a lot of quest-compatible games do this, why are you limiting this XR2 when it can deliver far higher fidelity? Anyways rant over.

As for the gameplay...

It's nice. It's spooky, but I have a few gripes with it, particularly, FNAF 2 has really finicky small buttons to press, which just doesn't seem to work the best in VR, and the mask is also a bit of an ass... Sometimes I'll put it on when I don't want to, and sometimes I'll NOT put it on when I'm clearly smashing my face into it.

As for the others... It's mostly just game design I'm really concerned about, the dark rooms Funtime foxy level tells you to "not use the beacon too frequently" yet, using the beacon frequently after a few steps is the key to beating the level, pretty weird over all.

But outside of those negatives, well, I'd say it's a damn good horror game, you know why this is in my backlog? Because I goddamn shat myself and quit off the game every other time I tried, but this time I HAD to do it, so I had no choice.
And that's with me being a pretty fearless guy in terms of horror, I suppose being in VR steps it up a notch, or two.

Also the ending I was aware of much before I ever even played this game, so it wasn't a surprise, but it's still fairly cool to say I saw it, it's interesting... Oh and I didn't go for all tapes or nothing like that, no man got time for that stuff dawg, I've got 67 other games to play!

Final thoughts... You can choke on the action figures 10/10 would choke again.

This is game 3/71 from my backlog!

What.

Okay so, lots of thoughts, first of all, what? Second of all, what???????

This game started off darker than the original two, but then I saw Colombia and I was like "DAMNNNN", I know this is a gen 7 game but the lighting and art style goes crazy.

The gore is also considerably more frequent in this game, not to say 1 or 2 weren't gory, this one is just more explicit about it.

Gun play... Feels an order of magnitude better than the two previous entries, though some of that must be due to the aim in the previous two games being kind of... Bad.
But one thing about the gunplay being good is that... This is way more of a shooter with rpg elements, than an Rpg with shooter elements, you can really no brain through this game (which I did not, because it was quite entertaining throughout), but it does still feel like bioshock, somehow. But it is however extremely different, I don't know how people stand on this, but I bet some people heavily dislike this new gameplay, plasmids are always very useful but they have been toned down a bit, most of them do kind of similar things with some exceptions.

Continuing to talk about gameplay, Elizabeth is an achievement in game design, they managed to make a supporting character enjoyable to have around by, and hear me out here, not making you have to protect her, and what's even better, she ACTIVELY helps you, I MISS Elizabeth when she's not with me, it's super nice to have someone to scout and throw items at me (which the animation has I-frames so that's nice too), Elizabeth is so nice that I found myself saying "thanks" in sync to the main character whenever she threw me something.

As for characters, I never cared about them in bio 1 and 2, but here I do remember Elizabeth and ||the duo||, they were very entertaining, Elizabeth gets a little weird towards the end but I think that's in line with the message they were trying to give.

And the ending... I'll be honest, don't get it, at all, I suppose I'm ok with it, final boss fight was cool too.

Anyways, as for my finals thoughts... The game was short! I blasted through this way faster than I did bio 1 or 2, probably a combination of the gameplay being more up my alley, better controls and having a button that tells you where to go (it confused me like 3 times throughout the entire game so it works pretty well)

Overall, I liked this, I'm not gonna play burial at sea because I have an entire backlog to go through, but I might come back to finish the dlc at some point, very cool game!

This is game 2/71 of my backlog

I have mixed feelings on this game, but the negative side overwhelms the good side, by a decent bit.

I'll start with the negatives.

The controls suck piss, and also don't at the same time, I'm mixed on these pointer aim controls, sometimes it lets me do INSANE flicks that I wouldn't ever DREAM of doing neither in PC or Controller but sometimes it makes even just having an enemy at a 45° angle from you a death sentence because turning can be so difficult, the other controls are fine it's really just the aim that's inconsistent... There's a jump button, which I only found halfway through the campaign, it's the top dpad.

The Wii is also... REALLY loud when playing this game, I think it might be using the disc as some kind of texture streamer? At least that's all I can think of because otherwise there's no reason for it to need to read the disc every second

This game is also a very faithful port, which is a good thing, in a way, but considering the controls it's a shit thing. Because they expect me to deal with the enemies a certain way that I can't because I'm using the pointer controls, if an enemy shows up behind me I might as well be dead already, and also level 14 is just... Outright impossible without cheesing, I spent hour on it... even with the cheese you can die so, just a bad level, all of this leads to really dumb deaths, which leads to my playtime of this 7 hour campaign extending to about 9 hours, 2 hours of just dying...

Anyways, the frame rate is hit or miss, like, some missions it's buttery smooth 30 fps, and others it's like... 5.

As for the positives well... The story is ok. The graphics are well... They're technically appealing to me, they even have dynamic lighting, or at least some form of it, the weapons twist depending on the angle of the Wii mote... It's pretty cool overall, it's really rare to see a realistic game like this on the Wii and... I'm not too displeased.

Yeah that's all good I've got to say... I didn't have a single drop of dopamine while playing this.

This was a good wake up call, since I'm gonna be doing my backlog, some games are just gonna be shit, and I can't do much about that, just gotta keep going.
