i would steal this game from the pope

Celeste is a perfect example of how to make the gameplay of a video game tell a story. Its mix of crushing difficulty, tender handling of mental health issues, top-notch movement and tear-jerking moments makes for an utterly irreplaceable experience in the gaming world. Throw in one of the best soundtracks in gaming and lots of impossibly difficult challenges, and you have one of the most rewarding and profound video game experiences out there.

Toby Fox just does this thing where he makes really good games and I love them every time.

Few games can craft a world so wonderfully packed with character and vibrance in two or three hours, but again, praise be to Toby. I think about Deltarune all the time, from its elite soundtrack to its adorable characters to its hidden lore; every little facet of this game is purely entertaining and thought-provoking. Deltarune packs an unbelievable amount of heart into a brief punch that I haven't been able to stop thinking about since 2018, and I don't think I'll stop thinking about it until we get a full release.

Persona 5 is beyond dope. Everything that a game needs to be great is present in P5, and turned up to 11. Stunning visuals, a stunning soundtrack, a stunning cast of characters, and a stunning narrative. Persona pulls all this off with an inimitable sense of poise and style that contributes to every facet of the experience, and it nails the hybrid approach of being a turn-based RPG and a life simulator. All this builds a complex cast of characters, full of charming and genuinely interesting personalities. For being an 80+ hour experience, there are noticeably few boring story moments. In my playthroughs, I would say the Spaceport was absolutely the weakest part of the game (boring palace and annoying music), but every other palace brought a really fun and well-thought-out experience. This is another game I would put in anyone's hands, regardless of whether they're a JRPG fan or not.

I don’t feel a need to justify why Ocarina of Time has 4.5 stars. It set the 3D bar incredibly high for decades to come, and remains an enjoyable experience today with some of my favorite Zelda dungeons out there.

Earthbound is a game I’ve had more trouble finishing than it’s modern spiritual successors (I really hope it’s fair to classify Undertale / Deltarune as such, feel free to crucify me), but I still appreciate a lot of things about Earthbound. The game felt particularly slow in some instances when it came to some difficult bosses and grinding, but the absurdity of the game really lends itself to making some really sincere and gut-wrenching plot moments. I like Earthbound a lot for what it is, but I really appreciate the impact it’s had on the wider gaming community by means of its cult following. We literally wouldn’t have things like Undertale or the Chuggaaconroy youtube channel without it. Thank you Shigesato Itoi!

An excellent experience from top to bottom. I liked Bayonetta for its fluid combat, it’s witty sense of humor, and it’s BOOBA. Bayonetta never takes itself too seriously and nails the over-the-top sexual atmosphere, so the story can suffer a little in terms of narrative depth and meaning, but I never really cared because the gameplay was so balls-to-the-wall and enjoyable. Bayonetta is a perfect game to enjoy for what’s on the screen in front of you: insane angel slaughter, wacky yet suave characters, and the aforementioned BOOBA.

I could have lived in a world without this remake, but it did make the water temple remarkably less frustrating, and for that I am grateful.

I used to have Majora’s as my number one Zelda game, but despite that not being the case anymore, I still recognize how amazingly this game holds up. Majora obviously nails the overwhelmingly dark and loaded atmosphere, and it’s side quests are undoubtedly the best in the Zelda franchise. I found the main quest line to be sort of middle-of-the-road for a Zelda title, especially in the Great Bay Temple and the Pirate Fortess, but it was wonderful nonetheless.

Pretty meh graphics, a pretty meh soundtrack, and an exceptionally meh storyline and cast of characters. I love Pokémon, but I found this game to be boring faster than any other game in the franchise.

This is the first DS game I remember playing, and it remains one of my favorites. Top-notch Kirby gameplay from beginning to end.

I would mark 4 stars for my initial experience with Overwatch, but it undoubtedly has gone downhill since then. At first I really enjoyed the cast of characters and playing with my friends, but at some point (I think maybe a couple months prior to Wrecking Ball’s release but I’m not really sure) it started to become boring for me because of the nonsensical changes and poor balancing. The events and PVE modes were never too fun for me either. I can still pick up a few heroes and have a fun experience, but those heroes have largely been unchanged since 2016 in terms of gameplay.

Gen 5 Supremacy.

Black and White have shown that you can have an interesting yet simple story with interesting characters contained within a Pokémon game, but for whatever reason Game Freak just doesn’t want to return to the design choices that made Black and White so wonderful. Even disregarding characters like N making the game interesting to play through, Black and White share a killer soundtrack, great visuals, and a cast of equal parts lovable and strong Pokémon.

The first thing I think of when I think about Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc is probably how neat Makoto Naegi is (Hi Patryk!). The second thing I probably would think of would be how well Danganronpa nails a claustrophobic, sardonic atmosphere while providing some fun, puzzling class trial action. I don’t think the first Danganronpa has any particularly standout trials compared to 2 or V3, but that isn’t to say they aren’t enjoyable. I think I enjoyed 2’s more over-the-top and zany atmosphere to 1’s gloom, but I still appreciate how excellently crafted the environmental despair of Hope’s Peak Academy is. I didn’t think there were any particularly slow or frustrating trials in DR, but I found it easier to enjoy myself when I was playing through a class trial or exploring the world in Danganronpa 2

Just a straight improvement on the original Bayonetta for me. The soundtrack slaps, the visuals slap, and slapping around the inhabitants of Paradiso and Inferno is very fun.
