2023 gaming

2023 was a weird year for me gaming-wise. after finishing tears of the kingdom i just stopped finishing games. however, i did start a lot of games and didn't finish them (yet), i'm still playing final fantasy xiii, for example! i got a job recently too, so i became more tired, i guess! me & some friends started a game club this year, by the way! i've played some very interesting stuff that i wouldn't play soon or never if it wasn't for it, and for some months it was the only thing i've played... outside of tetris. i've played a lot of tetris this year. specially the game boy version and the ds version. i've watched the movie too, it sucks!!

also, i think i haven't written that much this year, too. i don't know if i had a lot to say about the games i've played, some of them didn't impact me as much or someone already said something way more interesting that i could ever say. i hope that in 2024 i'll be able to play games more consistently and maybe write more about them, but considering that college is ending and i plan to keep working after my contract expires... maybe it's going to be a busy year!

anyway, those are the games i've played this year. no rates because i've stopped rating games, but ranked worst-to-best. to be honest i think i've not played a bad game this year so is more something like ok-to-life-changing!!

i kind of went crazy when i saw this because is like. non-euclidean zelda. still... is not as remarkable in retrospect, lol. interesting experiment tho but maybe you should just play some other non-euclidean games.
a little more of resident evil 4 that i've played mainly because i was planning to do a hard mode run of the main story! is not bad is just like, eating the fat without the steak, you know?
it's cool! cute! hell-ish! i think i'm not the best sokoban player out there... a shame because i was really interested in void stranger.
fellow backloggd's mutual letshugbro brings a reflection about game developing as a whole, even when the focus is the whole discourse about how game freak is "lazy" as a developer. it's interesting!
some friends that know me, known that i'm not the biggest dimps fan. more specifically, i'm not the biggest advance fan. more more specifically, i hate sonic advance 2 and think that 3 is bad! discussing with my friends i just decided that i would give this trilogy another chance, open my heart to accept that yeah! dimps maybe were cooking back in the day and... they really weren't lol. sonic advance is an okay game but it really feels like the sonic you would play in a game boy advance because it's the only sonic game you have in a game boy advance! nothing specially amazing and some really mid-to-bad moments but i think i've had a greater time when playing this... not enough to make me play the other 2 again, maybe next year?
this game made me want to play pokémon again!! in fact i started heartgold and i'm playing blaze black too! it has its problems, of course, and i really prefer more contained pokémon worlds, however it was very fun and tinkaton is a goddess.
crazy how the only straight guy here is zack and he dies
it's a good time!! but i went nuts by the fact that the final boss is like. the most difficult thing ever?? i didn't completed the map so maybe that's the reason but oh my god! looking forward for their next game
i decided that i would play all of etherane's works in 2023 and... this didn't happened! i enjoyed my time with hello charlotte episode 1 tho!! felix my beloved.

same with etherane's, i was planning on playing all of analgesic's works, specially since melos is on the site and i pretty much enjoy his reviews! anyways, i started 2's recently but 1 is very special in its own way! i think that retrospectively it gained my heart a little more than when i finished! sometimes i listen to the ost when i'm studying or doing anything more "meditative", probably the greatest point in here, since it helps creates the dreamy atmosphere that is potentialized in 2. very excited to play all of their games, i bought a bunch on steam already!
i thought i would throw up playing this but it ended up being fine!! love the parkour, the setting and faith (also her name is something to do with a "leap of faith" since she parkours or what...?). i don't know if i like using weapons that much tho
the ultimate take in here is that this is sonic's scott pilgrim takes off before scott pilgrim takes off. really wish to see more sonic games with that much character interactions and overall characterization! SEGA already turned a rgg joke into a game so why not do a full sonic umineko game...
my first goemon game and it's lovely! i don't know if i have a lot to say but one thing for sure: more games should have mecha boss fights with an anime opening every time the mecha appears.
this was genuinely impressive. sonic team was at his best in the 90s/early 00s. game about helping people, quite much what kojima says about the rope and stick. in this case, you shoot to extinguish the fire, not to harm anyone. you do harm weird-biological-beings and robots but! you are saving mankind. also it's aesthetically so pleasing, i love the anime fmvs and i love the ost! really a surprise.
this games ROCKS (literally)
it does everything better than aria of sorrow... except for the narrative and atmosphere. i think that aria's vibes are immaculate. still, amazing game design! love how you have a lot more of movement options and this makes the exploration gains a whole new layer, as well as the combat! i know that some people criticize the touch-thing, but i played with a mod, so! it was very smooth for me beginning-to-end. the belmont mode is very good too but i didn't finish it... still crazy how they translated 4 different movesets to the map without breaking it. really good! i think that "metroidvania" is maybe one of my favorite genres, i always have a good time playing these, even if is not something as stellar as hollow knight or super metroid.
the thing about symphony of the night is that, even thinking that maybe aria and dawn are better... this game is just monumental. rondo & this are the ultimate castlevania vibes ever. unmatched. you can see how 99% of metroidvanias that are more "-vanias" really try to hit the same notes but they are not even in key. truly a classic.
STANDING HEREEEE
I REALIZEEEEE
YOU ARE JUST LIKE MEEEE
TRYING TO MAKE HISTORYYYY
i think that botw did a bigger impact on me, but totk is so much more fun to play for me. spend a lot of time with this (everyone did, but still!). one of the best zelda's final bosses ever and!! glad that they tried to do more traditional dungeons, the fire and sand temples are really good imo. def didn't have much to say when i finished it, it was one of the most discussed games of the year and my experience was more of a fanboy/brain-dead gaming than anything to be honest. still!! crazy ass game, nintendo will always be putting the best AAA out there, sorry but is the truth.
mario 2D with a design philosophy of a 3D mario: practically perfect! i do agree that they can do much better in a sequel, but still is the best 2023 game i played in 2023, videogames in its purest form.
i decided to play resident evil 4 due to the remake. i waaaas planning to play the whole franchise and at some point i started REmake but i wasn't really with the mindset for it so i never finished. anyway, downloaded it with HD project and played the whole thing and Oh My God, is one of the best shooters ever? really smart enemy encounter, love the goofy-camp-vibes and it just feels so great to shoot! it's like, one of the, if not >the< best shotgun reloading animation ever! also leon is hot. ashley is cute. probably the platonic ideal of a videogame (good shooter, hot boy, cute girl). i will go back to it one day and do a hard mode run, but still is a very remarkable experience on its own, and its mechanical ceiling fascinates me a lot.

oh, about the remake? i did play it until... before the castle i guess? i watched my friend play it until mid-castle but!! it's not as great as the original and is not even nostalgia or something... i really didn't liked it that much! i do like the parry and shit but i miss the more B-movie-silly-vibe. they tried to make it more serious at the same time that tried to keep the silly spirit alive and it didn't worked for me! also i was playing on ps4 and i became exhausted of playing things on console after having a computer, so this might've influenced too. anyway! re4 og masterpiece shinji mikami tha goat.
devastating story about generational trauma and overall kindness. one of those to think that you are not the best person you could be sometimes. affected me at that level.
one of the best platformers i've played and one of the best games in general. just pure fun and geniality. fuck sony for closing japan studios, they were the real soul of playstation.

also monke
"Which would you rather end up in... a coffin, or a dumpster?"

i guess that in bed, mr. dante. with you!

(everyone said a lot about this one. i even said some things myself too. i really don't have much more too say that sounds unique. great gameplay loop, aesthetics etc.)
for a loooong time this was my favorite game i've never played. i finally did it in 2023 and is one of the most well-designed rpgs out there! beautiful narrative with a very depressing gloomy claustrophobic setting. however, with the constant hope of seeing the sky one day.
i think no game has nailed being gay and in love with someone who isn't feeling the same intense feelings as you, as this one. just as in re:kinder is also about generational trauma and abuse, but this is more a consequence for heart's character than the focus itself. i have a lot to say about this, but i think i should replay it to do a more proper write-up. anyway. is my personal game of the year and one of the best piece of art i've interacted in my whole life. truly special.
