Videos Games I Shouldn't Have Completed

As a kid, I only used to get two or three video games a year - so I really had to make them last. I'd complete anything and everything to make sure I got every last penny of value from my video games.

Now, as an adult with a job, I no longer need to complete every video game I buy... But I still try to, for some godforsaken reason! I simply can't stop wasting my life!

Here is a list of video games I played to completion that I did not need to play completion. That doesn't just necessarily mean they were outright bad games that weren't worth my time at all - they could also be games that took too long to get where they wanted to go and/or just flat-out wasted Player Time with repetitive mechanics, content or other filler.

Be kind to yourself and stop trying to finish every video game you play!

Earthworm Jim 3D
Earthworm Jim 3D
my first experience with a "bad game" - i was only about 10 years old when this came out and hadn't really considered the possibility that video games could be bad. handles and looks like dogshit throughout and requires an insane collectible grind to complete. 10 year old me could have been outside practicing his football tricks instead of trying to make earthworm jim do pixel-perfect jumps into dogshit polygons
Lost Kingdoms
Lost Kingdoms
playing a fromsoft game as a 12 year old in 2002 in the days long before fromsoft was a household name in the west was so painful and sad and lonely. i was a kid who was used to Super Mario and Banjo-Kazooie and had no idea that gaming could be so cruel... but i persevered. maybe this one was an experience in personal growth?
Star Fox Command
Star Fox Command
knew it was bad because i'd also played starfox assault (which was mercifully brief and therefore cannot be included on this list), but my brother and i were oddly compelled to see all the endings and grinded through the campaign countless times to see them. this was right before youtube became a thing and you could just watch these things for free
Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie
Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie
i admit it - i played it for the achievements!! and what is gamescore worth now? nothing!
Braid
Braid
i did the whole 100% thing and abstained from guides where possible because i thought it would prove how smart i was. do you think i'm smart? no, of course not!
Fez
Fez
dont even get me started on this piece of time-consuming shit
The Saboteur
The Saboteur
i heard there were boobs in the game and that motivated me for like half the runtime. should have stopped once i saw the boobs.
Persona 4
Persona 4
yeah you're as surprised as i am that it's persona 4 on here and not persona 3. i played it back in the days before it had the "just gimme the VN" mode and boy, do i wish i hadn't! days and days spent trawling through persona fusion guides to get through those last dungeons and all for what? a story that was provoking "yikes, bro!"s even in 2008 gamefaqs message boards?! d'oh! time that could have been spent building and painting model airplanes!
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies
great game! but without any real story to speak of, there's not reason not to stop playing something like this when the fun wears out. i didn't let that stop me, of course!
Assassin's Creed Revelations
Assassin's Creed Revelations
i was so invested in ezio auditore da firenze that i played all of these - AC2 and Brotherhood were both really fun! AC2 even cut random bits of story out of the game to get things moving faster! but this one just ramped up the filler and had a disappointingly slight story that only sorta concluded The Ezio Trilogy.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
i got 1000/1000 gamerscore for this. on xbox 360. in the first month. with no patches. and no mods. what kind of sick feral man was i ten years ago?
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
x-com is a very fun game, but i think it's more fun to attempt permadeath runs and go back to the beginning if you fuck it up. for a tactics-brainless idiot like me, trying to save your way to the end of the game just feels fraught with misery and fruitless hard work. it's edifying to play a game where you accept your own failures and shortcomings as a human being.
BioShock Infinite
BioShock Infinite
hated the game for most of its runtime but insisted on banging my head against the final boss on hard, even though i was saved into a corner in terms of ammo and health. days upon days spent working to see an incredibly lacklustre ending that was, by all accounts, slapped together in less time than i spent trying to beat the fucking thing. but i suppose the gamerscore was worth it in the end!
The Wolf Among Us
The Wolf Among Us
sunk cost fallacy storytelling
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
too much of a good thing...
Uncharted: Golden Abyss
Uncharted: Golden Abyss
i had to work really hard to mentally justify buying a vita even though i got the vita for £50
Far Cry 4
Far Cry 4
couldnt tell you a single thing that happened in this game. i have almost 40 hours logged in it. i could have spent those 40 hours hanging out with my friends.
Yakuza 5
Yakuza 5
be real with yourself. there is no need for a video game with such straightforward gameplay to be this long. oh you played it for the story?? go on - tell me like 10% of what happened! thats right... you cant! your eyeballs were glazed like a krispy kreme!! you could have been using that time to read a book or something!!!
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Dragon Age: Inquisition
this game felt like working a thankless corporate job for a decade only to come in one day and find out your keycard doesn't work and they've dumped all your shit in the bins out back
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Xenoblade Chronicles X
once you've unlocked the mech and its flight pack and tried out some of the most outrageous skills, what's the need to keep playing? for the story? c'mon man. the characters look like sex dolls that have been brought to life by a wizard who's still an undergrad at magic school. get real. you could be talking to girls right now
Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest
Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest
i beat all three of these wretched things. fire emblem at its absolute worst - waifu generator and RPG grinding cranked to 100000%, tactics dialled down to the bare minimum, battles reduced to a means of tricking the player into thinking they aren't playing a dating sim. perfect for someone like me who has (as this list demonstrates) very little brain.
Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation
Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation
Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright
Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright
Fallout 4
Fallout 4
i remember really enjoying the fort-building. gathering resources, planning a layout, deciding where my defences should go, where my dude could sleep peacefully, that kind of thing. at some point, my brain went "hey - you shouldnt be messing around with this thing you're enjoying! there's a Main Quest to complete!" and i abandoned my fallout fort. biggest mistake of my life
Persona 5
Persona 5
just merciless in its time-wasting ability. reams and reams and reams and reams and reams of text that doesn't communicate anything meaningful, dungeons on dungeons on dungeons that may as well just be straight lines, mountains of padded shit encasing the gemstones of good content the game actually has. completed it because i didn't want to say i hadn't finished a persona game, but maybe it's time for me to burn my dread and become a guy who doesn't complete anime high school games he doesn't like

This list encouraged me to, at the very least, put some stuff on the back burner so I could play other games I was more excited for instead of trying to keep trucking through stuff out of obligation so sincerely thank you for this list
