when i was 6 years old my parents let me skip school the day this came out. i love this so much

I reckon Galaxy fans would admit that much of what was special about the original game was its cinematic flair. Nintendo struck a comfortable balance between traditional gameplay and cutscene spectacles and thus avoided having Mario appear too ridiculous within a high-stakes, ambitiously presented story (at least for the franchise). Strip that subtly emotional charm away and what's left?

Galaxy 2 is immediately less special. The intro's side-scrolling presentation brings the New Super Mario Bros. series to mind moreso than Galaxy. The new hub, the "Faceship", leaves little room for curiosity. There's no exploring to be done here. The observatories are removed and in its place you have rudimentary world maps that are the least captivating in the franchise since Yoshi's Island in 1995. Remember in the first game when you had rings that measured out the distance galaxies were from the observatory?

Perhaps some of the level design is tighter, but what good is it when the team has lightened up the experience to the point where it's hard to take seriously? Where's Rosalina to add mystery to the cosmos? Where's the sense of galaxies being actual worlds that characters live in, instead of just being clearly designed to be obstacles for Mario? Why is Yoshi here? Why are so many more levels and portions of levels two-dimensional?

Galaxy 2 can be fun, but you'll be fine with taking breaks. You won't be worried about Peach, about how to help Rosalina. It's just a video game.

I still like it quite a bit, but not as much as Galaxy 1. It misses a lot in terms of presentation and more open levels. Yoshi is cool though.

So similar to the first one that I couldn't tell you which levels are in the first or second game. Is that a bad thing? No, it's more Mario Galaxy, and Galaxy is a masterpiece. Oh and Yoshi's cool too.

My favorite game of all time, this game is just pure magic and joy incarnate and one I will always come back to.

SMG 2 is a brilliant game, it's a fucking Mario Galaxy after all, mindblowing level design, fun as hell and a joy to play. But that's all.

It doesn't even come close to the magic, impact, creativity and atmosphere that the first Galaxy delivers, not to mention the story. It's just more SMG, with an inferior experience

Go fuck yourself Miyamoto. Stay away of Super Mario and let Koizumi work.

getting a lot of Space Chimps vibes from this game

Awesome sequel to SM Galaxy which met the high expectations with its focus on creative level designs

Compared to its predecessor, Super Mario Galaxy 2 heavily lacks the atmosphere and grandiosity of the original but makes up for it with some incredibly tight-level design and ideas. At times, SMG1 feels like it doesn't truly know if it wants to be "course clear mario" or "sandbox mario" with levels like Beach Bowl Galaxy feeling like a bit of a slog to get through. This isn't the case for SMG2, where levels feel confident in what they want to be- short bursts of fun entirely focused on one idea.

It has great level design and snappy movement -like its prequel- but it got rid of the nostalgic and melancholic atmosphere I loved along with the masterpiece of a soundtrack Galaxy 1 had.

Mario Galaxy was a 10, so Galaxy 2 is an 11. Platforming galore. My only qualm, that is mostly my fault: I suck at the gliding levels.

While I don't like this game as much as the first one, I enjoy this game regardless. Most of the things I love about the first Galaxy Game apply here, Great Level Design, Great Atmosphere, Awesome Soundtrack, Good Controls, etc. Galaxy 2 also has among the best power-ups in the series, especially the Cloud Flower, Floatier Jumps feel great and using the Clouds to travel through the air is also fun to do. The bosses are fun for the most part like Rollodillo, Megahammer, Boomsday Machine, etc.

However, I do have my issues with the game, firstly I didn't like the Motion Control Levels in the first game, and I don't like them here either, the Bowser Fights are pretty disappointing it's just the same fight over and over, which is disappointing that they didn't change things up for the future fights to make them distinct themselves, and the Bowser Fights are just okay, nothing more, nothing less.

Regardless, I like this game for what it is, just not as much as the first game.

I totally understand why some people prefer Galaxy 1 over Galaxy 2.

But honestly, I think Galaxy 2, despite not having as rich as an atmosphere, wins me over for quite a few reasons, the biggest one being that there are less stars in the levels, which you would think is a bad thing, but because of this, you don’t have to play one level for an incredibly long time, Galaxy 1 was fun, but doing the same level 5-6 times could get a bit boring, in this game, the most I had to replay a level was 3 times, (granted I haven’t 100% the game yet) I just find that Super Mario Galaxy 2 feels a lot more fast paced then its predecessor, and I mean that in the best way possible.

I don't really have much to say about Super Mario Galaxy 2 other than it's phenomenal like the first one. It has improvements over the first one and also has personal letdowns compared to the first one.
In terms of improvements, well, the power-ups here are much better, the Cloud Flower is one of the best things ever created; Yoshi is here, which is always a positive; the Starship Mario hub world, while not as big as the Comet Observatory from the first game, does have a lot more to do on it so that's fun. And... I dunno, it keeps a lot of the qualities from Galaxy 1. The phenomenal level design, the gravity mechanics, the fantastic orchestral soundtrack, the smooth gameplay, it's really awesome.
But my biggest issue with this game is that compared to the first it totally feels less like a space adventure and more so like a whimsical Mario game, which is great don't get me wrong, but one of the reasons why I love Super Mario Galaxy is the pure immersion on the vast space atmosphere. The levels in the original felt like actual ecosystems spread all over the universe, where in Galaxy 2 they feel more like videogame levels. Galaxy 2 still has some levels that capture the essence of the first absolutely but it's not frequently. The blue sky theme is more prevalent here and yeah that gives Galaxy 2 some personality and identity but I will always prefer Galaxy 1's emphasis on pulling you into this huge, exciting and beautiful space adventure.
Also the level selection is pretty much a straight line where you have to unlock the next level to unlock the next level and- you get the idea. They could have done something like Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario World and added secret routes to unlock secret stages and make the map navigation feel much less linear.
Yeah that pretty sums up my feelings on this game. It's a masterpiece of 3D platforming that I love and it definitely has improvements over the original but the more happy-go-lucky Mario atmosphere, more forgettable levels compared to the first one, linear map navigation and 99% less Rosalina make this game really not stand a chance compared to the first one. But that's my personal opinion, I will totally understand if someone prefers this over Galaxy 1, it's really good on its own merits.

Oh my god it's super mario galaxy 2 why is this game the most perfect video game of all time, what is your secret Miyamoto please tell us.

I may not have as much of a nostalgic connection to this one, but it’s better than the first, and one fo my favorite games of all time.

I and many others consider Mario Galaxy to be one of the greatest games of all time. It is still wonderful to play and a beast in the 3D Mario lineup. But there were many concepts that didn't make it into the first installment, perfect to put in a sequel. Amazing ideas that can be found all around Galaxy 2. In the music, sound design, creative ass levels, powerups, and even the front cover which shows off the most significant of them all- Yoshi.

Yoshi opened up many gameplay and level opportunities. Even his own power ups which are distinct from Mario's. His power ups are used for entire levels that are designed with it at the core. Yoshi breathes life into every level he is a part of. The kicker is that Yoshi only shows up in a handful of the galaxies, somewhat disappointing because he literally takes up more space on the cover than Mario. Still, the majority of galaxies he is absent in are great.

Moving into the unfortunate regressions of Galaxy 2, first I want to mention the story and atmosphere. Upon the opening It is slowly realized that this will be a retelling of its predecessor's plot. A real shame after what an amazing job Galaxy 1 did with it, they could have taken many other approaches especially since the first game had very recently come out. It feels lazy for them to not find any other drive for this game to occur. With a full view of the story post-credit-roll it is very much an abridged version of the first. Most people may not find issue with that as story has never exactly been the focus of Mario, however I think it limits this game's potential in many areas that could have been switched up between the two.
A great part of Galaxy 1 is the lonely wonder that is perfectly instilled in the cosmos you are exploring. Galaxy 2 leaves that behind for an atmosphere more akin to your average Mario game. There are less starry-skies filled with various planets and more blue cloudy skies inhabited by stages. Even the progression system switched from themed domes at Rosalina's comet observatory to a linear world map designed for quick access. I found myself sorely missing the original's atmosphere, which wonderfully distinguished Galaxy from the other Mario games.

Despite it's fallbacks the level design in Galaxy 2 is still stellar and keeps the action packed fun. It absolutely holds a candle to the first game. My favorites in no particular order were
-Boo Moon
-Tall Trunk
-Bowser's Galaxy Generator
-Chompworks
-Melty Monster
-Cosmic Cove

I may soon try to 100% this game, something I haven't really thought of doing for Galaxy 1

Super close to finishing! The world isn't as cool as the first one but it's a fun sequel!

Super mario galaxy 2 is a really frustrating game. Because on the 1 hand this is clearly a rushed expansion to the 1st game with a worse story, a less engaging more stock world, a somewhat repetitive structure. and has a terrible final boss. On the other hand it's also probably the best level design, music and and difficulty curve of any 3d platformer, let alone game in 7th gen

Pros:
+ Same control set as Mario Galaxy
+ Yoshi adds even more variety to the game
+ Each level feels unique, while also being different from the first game
+ 100% completing this game is a lot less repetitive than the first
+ Music is beautiful
+ The boss fights in this game are fun and differ enough so that they stay interesting
+ Luigi is playable (again)
+ LUIGI
---------------------
Cons:
- I don't like how the story doesn't connect with the first game
- Feels a little less open than the first, with more 2D sections and smaller levels

Review: This should be considered a perfect sequel. It doesn't remove or change Mario's move set, it only adds to what's already there with new power ups and Yoshi. While I still prefer the first Mario Galaxy over this one, Galaxy 2 is still just as fun as the first. :)

”Now, let me tell you a new story that also begins with stardust…”

Super Mario Galaxy 2 loses the elegance of its predecessor. Gone are the mysterious Rosalina and her majestic Comet Observatory; in their places we get a fat purple Luma and a spaceship shaped like Mario’s head. Instead of moving through the hub world to find levels, we have a basic world map. More often than not, instead of the dark, lonely reaches of space, we’re treated to cheery blue skies and bustling planets. Instead of an epic, semi-serious story with a surprising amount of backstory, we get… Bowser kidnapping Peach, only this time, he’s HUUUUGE!

I prefer the first Galaxy for its superior atmosphere and story. So why did I give Galaxy 2 five stars despite everything I just said?

Because I enjoyed damn near every second of it.

What Galaxy 2 loses in terms of atmosphere and story, it makes for with its sheer level design. Every level is meticulously structured to introduce a challenge, escalate the difficulty, and conclude on a high note. Galaxy 2 beats out its predecessor in terms of how much more consistently fun its levels are.

Cloudy Court, Cosmic Cove, Tall Trunk, Yoshi Star, the list goes on. So many galaxies with so many great ideas. Sometimes your braving the depths of an underwater labyrinth, next you’re racing against a slew of buzzsaws that are cutting apart the very ground you stand on, then you’re dashing up a vertical wall on top of a dinosaur… this game just never runs out of ideas!

While the atmosphere of the first is absolutely better, there’s still something endearing about Galaxy 2’s upbeat nature. The bright colors, gorgeous graphics, and sweeping music score make the game feel so… good. It helps that the game technically does pick up where the previous one left off (“…the cycle never repeats itself in quite the same way…”), and the ending is quite heartwarming. Although it’s overall a downgrade, the cheerful tone of Galaxy 2 nevertheless helps it stand out on its own.

The bosses are also a step up. Every Bowser Jr. fight is a banger (especially his Boomsday Machine). A Lakitu tries to strike Mario with lightning. A whole planetoid comes to life and tries to crush Mario to death. A fucking dragon smashes through a planet while chasing Mario around. The only disappointment is, strangely, Bowser himself, who just isn’t as good as Galaxy 1. Other than that, though, this is easily the best set of bosses in the Mario series.

Then there’s power-ups. The Cloud Mushroom is awesome and allows for creative, player-driven platforming. The Rock Mushroom is… fine, but it’s utilized well in Melty Monster Galaxy. The Fire Flower and Boo Mushroom are back, and they work exactly the same. Finally, my precious Bee Mushroom (which everyone seems to hate for some reason) returns for some very tasty, honey-themed stages.

Oh, and Yoshi!!! Yoshi’s back, and this is probably his best outing yet. Instead of being a cumbersome and sometimes glitchy hinderance like in Sunshine, Yoshi adds on to Mario’s moveset and even gets power-ups of his own: he can float, dash across surfaces in ways that defy gravity, and light up otherwise dark and invisible paths. You still can’t take him out of levels, but unlike in the New Super Mario Bros. series, this makes sense as Yoshi simply wouldn’t work in many of this game’s levels, so I’m fine with him being confined to a select number of them. Man, Yoshi’s implementation is phenomenal in this game.

There are other slight improvements over the first game, too. Coins are actually useful for something other than health refills, as they can be used for feeding Hungry Lumas and a gambling minigame in the hub world. The Prankster Comets actually stay once they’re unlocked (that never really bothered me to begin with, but it’s more convenient here). Motion controls are overall better-implemented (except in Rolling Coaster Galaxy, which can go fuck itself). Finally, Galaxy 2’s difficulty is significantly higher than its predecessor, and is one of the hardest games in the series. However, the difficulty isn’t due to “fuck you” level design like The Lost Levels, or “fuck you” glitches like Sunshine; rather, the game just has some good ol’ fashioned, skill-based platforming. I rarely felt cheated when I died, I felt bested, as it was almost always my fault

I don’t know. Despite the watered-down story and the loss of a unique, melancholic atmosphere, Galaxy 2 is still phenomenal. It’s got great level design, unique power-ups, fantastic visuals and music, stellar bosses, and numerous improvements over the first one. I still prefer Galaxy 1 and Odyssey for their unique tones and creativity, but Galaxy 2 is still a fantastic, highly-polished, and wonderful sequel that hold its own as one of the plumber’s best adventures.

NOTA: 8,75

Possibly the sharpest EAD has ever been with Mario. Every stage is incredible, all the power-ups are fun, the linear world progression works really well when you have this much variety and it started the running trend of having a very hard last challenge run.

It's my favorite Mario game

“soulless this soul that” aight we get it you wanna fuck rosalina

I nutted across the universe with this game

Super Mario Galaxy 2 -

"How could Nintendo ever top a masterpiece like Galaxy 1 with a straightforward sequel?" That's what I thought until I played this.

Words cannot fully describe how phenomenal this game is. The level design is unbelievable, moving between ideas so imaginative you wonder if the designers at Nintendo are even human. Even more amazing is how the game doesn't crumble under its own ambitions. Every single idea is gradually introduced before being pushed to a more challenging level. Many of the best challenges come from the Comet missions in each level, which were implemented much better than Galaxy 1. This game set a new gold standard for platformers that still hasn't been topped in my opinion.

Good, but loses the amazing atmosphere and vibe of the first and doesn't make up for it. The green stars are some of the most boring shit in any Mario game as well, thank god for dolphin emulator

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is truly a great follow-up to an all time masterpiece of a game, and in many rights is a masterpiece itself. The debate of which Galaxy game is better I think is pretty subjective, as they are both absolutely phenomenal and very, very close to perfect. There is something particularly special about Mario Galaxy 1 that causes me to believe it to be slightly better, but it is so incredibly close. Galaxy 2 is more of Galaxy 1 with as just as much all brand new content, with a lot of special surprises and wonderful moments, while continuing what is one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all time from the first game. I will never give up hope for a Galaxy 3, I feel like we've seen crazier; at the same time, I do wonder if they could manage to make it as special as the two all-time great Galaxy games we have today.
