2022 Rankings

Ranking all the games I either beat or played enough of to score them in 2022. This includes games I replayed this year. Each game has a small note attached to it.

God of War Ragnarök
God of War Ragnarök
My game of the year for 2022. This is everything I could have wanted and more. A very gripping and interesting story, great music, some of the best characters and character growth I've seen in a game in years, and some fantastic combat with lots of customization options to change up your playstyle. I was never bored from beginning to end even during those long Atreus sections. The growth of Kratos from the very first GoW game on the PS2 to Ragnarok is beautiful.

1

Elden Ring
Elden Ring
This was almost my game of the year. This sums up everything I love about souls games and cranks it up to 11 by making it open world. The replayability of this game is amazing. There's so many different build you can go with and once you know where everything is you can start a game up run there, get what you want, and then play the game. Throw in some of the toughest bosses in a souls game and you have a recipe for a great game.

2

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - Reunion
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - Reunion
Zack's story still hits as hard as it did on the PSP. This time the gameplay can keep up with the story and characters in this world. The game is short but it never feels like they are rushing things. They took an already amazing PSP game and made it even better.

3

Hades
Hades
A near perfect rogue-lite. Everything is super responsive and the runs never felt like they were the same. Love the cast of characters and the story. It gains 50 points for being set around Greek mythology. I poured countless hours into this well past getting the platinum trophy. Other games in this genre need to stop up their game to even come close to this.

4

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Probably the best Igavania game on the GBA. This is definitely in my top Castlevania games. Soma is just so cool. It has one of the best castles in the series. You combine that with top tier music and some great combat and you have one fantastic game.

5

Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy IV
Just like how 3 was better than the last, 4 is even better than that. The game has actual characters now and a decently thoughtout story. The actual RPG parts of the game were fun as well. The game does throw some BS your way near the end and the final boss is miserable. It still ends up being one of the better FF games.

6

Lost Ruins
Lost Ruins
I may be biased here since I helped Kickstart this game but I enjoyed everything about it. The aesthetics are on point and combining your magic with the environment is always fun. It's slower paced than other games like this but that helps it be somewhat different from the fast paced games in this genre.

7

Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights
Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights
This has an almost perfect balance of difficulty. It's a shockingly beautiful game. There's so much customization you can do to the combat that you can play entirely different each time you play. The OST is also on the better side.

8

Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth
Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth
This has novel ideas for games in this genre and has the tight combat to back it up. Being set in the Lodoss world helps a lot for my enjoyment. The animations are great too. Just honestly felt like an indie take on Castlevania: Symphony of the Night which is a win in my book. I look forward to the day when a big publisher reaches out to Team Ladybug and has them make the next entry in their franchise.

9

God of War III: Remastered
God of War III: Remastered
The best classic GoW game and my 2nd favorite in the series. This delivered on all fronts and wrapped up this saga in Kratos's life. The slobberknocker with Zeus in the end is fantastic. One of the rawest moments in gaming.

10

God of War
God of War
The lack of variety hurts this game. There's also not enough boss battle. It's still a fun game with good characters and combat though. Ragnarok fixes every problem this one has. Ragnarok does kinda ruin this game though. I don't think I can go back to this one knowing how much better it is.

11

Cuphead
Cuphead
The artstyle is the heart and soul of this game. It's too good. It's the type of game you play and you leave it saying you want more. It strikes the right balance between challenging but not so much it's unfair.

12

Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy
The game that started it all. It's still fun to go back and play to this day. There's no elaborate story to bog down the game, no hours of cutscenes to slow anything down, just raw RPG adventures in a unfamiliar land. They struck gold here. I'm sad they never made a FF2 though. Really weird to go straight to 3.

13

Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution
Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution
An updated version of the other YGO game that adds way more content. There's more story matches to play, they added all the DLC from the last game which was way overpriced, and there's a ton more cards to play with. If you don't want to use one of the unofficial online simulators and don't want to spend money in Master Duel this is one of the best options you have.

14

AI: The Somnium Files
AI: The Somnium Files
Date is a freak and I love him. There's a lot of twists and turns you probably won't expect. Some of the characters really get on my nerves though. It ends up being a fun VN with a mostly great cast.

15

Undertale
Undertale
Every time I mention this someone gets upset but I don't really enjoy Undertale all that much. I can see why people like it but it's just not for me. The humor most of the time just doesn't land. The music on the other hand is top tier A+++.

16

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course
Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course
A great DLC to an already fantastic game. Though IMO I think it costs too much for what's being offered.

17

Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel
Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel
It's Yu-Gi-Oh! It's just as fun as you think it is, if you like YGO. I stopped playing because after you build your first couple of decks you basically need to spend more to get more cards. I didn't feel like dropping money to open virtual packs so I stopped. It was still a lot of fun either way.

18

Mighty Switch Force! 2
Mighty Switch Force! 2
It takes the framework of the first game and runs wild with it. This is an improvement in every way. Including the OST which was already amazing in the first game.

19

Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist
Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist
A fun Yu-Gi-Oh simulator. It goes through the story beats of the different anime but it never really rises to compete with the best of the best in YGO games. There's nothing wrong with it but nowadays there's way better options to play online matches.

20

Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session
Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session
A game that's just fun to boot up here and there just to play a couple of songs. A great selection of music with some fun DLC songs you can get. I like the presentation and style it goes for. Those little dumb drums are really cute. I wish the physical drum set wasn't so expensive to import. I'd love to play it with those.

21

Castlevania: Dracula X
Castlevania: Dracula X
I love me some old school Castlevania even the kinda bad versions. The game gets cheap in later stages and there's some BS thrown in. At least the music is still good.

22

Mighty Switch Force!
Mighty Switch Force!
A super short and fun platformer. It has some cool ideas but kinda unrememberable in the grand scheme of things. It has a banger OST though.

23

Overwatch 2
Overwatch 2
It's a shame this could be so much higher on the list if it wasn't for the horrible monetization of the game. I still love the gameplay and characters in the game but I felt like I was wasting my time playing it with no sense of progression or anything to work towards. Will probably pick it back up again when the promised PvE content comes out.

24

Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy III
A vast improvement over the last game. I have my issues with the story and how the game punishes you if you don't use certain jobs at certain points. The final dungeon is the worst it has even been. But despite all of that I still really enjoyed the game. 90% of the time it was a lot of fun.

25

Gungrave G.O.R.E
Gungrave G.O.R.E
A solid 7/10 game. Nothing amazing, in fact it's kinda bad. But I can't help myself. Sometimes you just want to run and gun without having to worry about aiming. The style of the game is the highlight.

26

Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition
Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition
It's more of the same MSF1 but now in HD. I prefer the original to this one but this was still a fun time to sit back and puzzle out.

27

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2
Do you like Tetris? How about PuyoPuyo? If you answered yes to either of those you'll like this game. There's so many different variations you can choose from and a lot of game modes. It has a cute story mode too if online matches are not your thing.

28

Mighty Switch Force! Academy
Mighty Switch Force! Academy
It's more of the same really. It never really does enough on its own to stand out. Just a nice little side piece to a fun series.

29

Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy II
This would have been at the bottom of the list if I didn't play all of those short, random indie games. Despite how bad this is I still had more fun with it than those because I just love JRPGs so much. But this is not only one of the worst FF games I've played it's also one of the worst JRPGs I've played. You can easily skip this over.

30

Icey
Icey
This game hinges on how annoying you find the narrator. If you find him annoying you'll hate this game. If you like him you'll probably enjoy the game. I didn't mind him so I had an okay time with the game. The gameplay on its own is nothing to write home about. So don't bank on that to carry you through the game if you find him annoying.

31

Poinpy
Poinpy
Who would have thought that the Netflix gaming thing you get with a Netflix sub would produce such a good game. It's addicting, fun, and cute. When a run is over I always get the just one more run itch. Pretty dangerous NGL.

32

Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity
Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity
A short, fun, albeit repetitive Touhou fan game. Everything is serviceable, nothing is fantastic. Since this is a Touhou game you can expect great music though. This is a game you pick up and within the first 30 minutes you will know if you like it or not. There's almost no challenge to the game and the story, what little there is, is okay.

33

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising
Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising
Fetch quest the game. The visuals are great but the majority of the game is sadly fetch quests. There's also so much pointless dialogue. Around the 1/2 way point I started skipping any dialogue that wasn't the main story dialogue. The combat it way too simple.

34

The Deadly Tower of Monsters
The Deadly Tower of Monsters
The gameplay is bad. The game actively works against you. At times it's even unfun to play. But man the experience while playing it was worth it. I fell in love with the concept / story it was trying to do. If only they could have made a better game around that.

35

Taimumari: Complete Edition
Taimumari: Complete Edition
This game is cute. It doesn't do anything groundbreaking but it doesn't need to. Some of the stages / bosses seem a little unfair but it never ruined my experience. I had fun from beginning to end.

36

Legend of Himari
Legend of Himari
This game is similar to Kawaii Deathu Desu but I enjoyed the gameplay in this one a lot more. It's still really simple but I had fun during my playthrough of it.

37

Mario Kart Arcade GP DX
Mario Kart Arcade GP DX
Mario Kart but in arcades! Or in my case, theaters! If you like Mario Kart you will like this. Serviceable enough to play one round whenever you see a machine in the wild.

38

Unmechanical: Extended Edition
Unmechanical: Extended Edition
Fantastic atmosphere combined with cute designs add in some puzzle exploration and you have this game. The puzzles never get hard enough for you to get frustrated so you can sit back and enjoy the experience.

39

MouseCraft
MouseCraft
It has some cool ideas and I like the style it's going with. The puzzle range from braindead easy to deceptively hard. Zero replay value once you know the solution.

40

Terminator Salvation
Terminator Salvation
Decent enough light gun game but it's nothing special. Everything kinda blends together making for a mess.

41

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
I'm sure the game's probably a blast with friends but doing everything solo really brings down the experience. As a solo experience it's just an okay game.

42

Xeodrifter
Xeodrifter
Barebones indie game. It's real short. The kind of game you play then forget about the next day. Doesn't control all that well either.

43

Color Guardians
Color Guardians
A colorful, kinda fun runner style game. Doesn't really do anything to stand out from the crowd.

44

Kawaii Deathu Desu
Kawaii Deathu Desu
A cute looking game but it's far too simple and boring. You smash one button to move to the left and another to move to the right. That's it that's the game. Rinse and repeat to level up the characters to survive longer.

45

Don't Die, Mr. Robot!
Don't Die, Mr. Robot!
A decent arcade game with some tricky trophy related challenges. It doesn't live up to the arcade classics though.

46

Kitten Squad
Kitten Squad
A bad knockoff game from PETA. The game is a tiny tiny bit fun the first time but after that it's really repetitive and boring.
