(PARTIALLY-ARCHIVED) Games you aren't allowed to like, according to terminally online whackjobs/contrarians
Have a suggestion? I'm all ears for your opinions!. I can only say so much with this list, so I'm more than happy to hear you out. Everyone who posts a submission for that list will be properly credited.
.
In which I take pettiness and occasionally stupidity and blend them together with my special spices. That come out of my ass.
Occasionally this is a serious list, but some of this is also just me making jokes at the expense of contrarians.
My seriousness works in three degrees:
SERIOUS,
HALF-HEARTED,
SILLY,
HALF-HEARTED ANECDOTE.
There's plenty of piss and shit to be had in my comments section. By all means, the urinal cake is yours. Have a problem with the fact that I'm a fucking idiot? Name one instance in which I'm specifically a fucking idiot, and I'll shout you out under the particular submission you had a problem with. Criticism is welcome, as long as it's actually constructive.

@cyanplaza You're talking about the Community Submissions variant of this list, which still features that contribution.
It is worth noting:
I wrote none of the submissions on that list,
and although that submission featured shaky wording, I immediately paired it with a note asking future contributors to be more mindful with their language.
Apologies for the confusion.
For anyone wondering, their comment is gone because it a) it contained misinformation and b) my comment correcting it is not on the same page. I am not the only one reading these comments, but I might be the only person who cares.

For those who do want to know what their comment was asking (I've been there!), it was them saying that Hogwarts Legacy was on this list "at one point", but was deleted. Full transparency, I've done that with one game on this list, and it wasn't Hogwarts because I'm well aware that the comments made against that game have more of a broader context than the vast majority of the games I've covered here.
(That game was BioShock Infinite, and I removed it because I made comments comparing it to The Last of Us's AI companions. I replayed a little bit of TLoU, realized how far off the mark I was, and over-corrected.)

This is a really great list and a great read, I was especially happy to see Persona 5 here since I consider it my favorite game ever even though I haven't played it since the original came out and I really don't want to in fear of realizing it's actually not that great or kinda cringe, since that seems to be the popular perception of it nowadays. Also glad to see more and more people turning around on TLOU 2, I remember thinking I was insane looking at my feed on every social media at the time of release, hell, even before release when the leaks happened people were already losing their minds.
I'd like to respond to the Palworld note specifically though since I did write my own very negative review on it practically begging people not to play it so I feel like I should probably justify my reasoning a little more. I think Palworld goes a little beyond being "too derivative". Roguelikes and Card games borrow from each other a lot yes, but I wouldn't say they do so poorly, most of the popular and successful games in both genres have enough unique and creative elements within them to distinguish them from one another, I'd never confuse Slay the Spire with Monster Train, or Hades with Dead Cells, I'm not sure I can say the same about Palworld. When multiple designs in the game closely resemble Pokemon to the point where they could pass as alternate versions of the original designs I think there's a plagiarism problem, and that problem is emphasized when the rest of the game is also mechanically and visually indistinguishable from any other run-of-the-mill survival open world game. The more you borrow, the more you need to add, and in my eyes Palworld adds close to nothing novel to what it borrows, and to me that's stealing, which is why I care a little more about making sure people don't support it, if that makes sense.

I think I get what you're going for here, but Stray really is deeply, uncomfortably orientalist. Playing as a cat exploring a city is a cute idea that I am into, but it's undercut HARD when that city is built by a French team fantasizing about poverty tourism. Depicting actual living conditions experienced by real human beings in the global south and then populating it with faceless robots wearing rice paddy hats sounds like a joke! the middle of some riff how white cyberpunk authors go about setting things "in Asia." but no, it's done with a straight face and millions of dollars. I can't blame anyone who doesn't know about this, though, given the developers were intentionally kept out of all the marketing material. But, as someone whose opinion doesn't really matter, I am uncomfortable with actively not caring about that.

@sign On a bit of a break here, so I can respond to this.
I actually haven't heard this one yet. The reason Stray is on this list is because I kept seeing things along the lines of it being a pretty shallow game in terms of its substance. I wouldn't have picked on that because I don't even think I've played through half of it. When I'm done with my work, I'll cue you for a spotlight because this is actually a fantastic bit of perspective. Thank you!

@Fern, @shamzOwO, @sign - Hope you're glad with the results.

@Mykurr I don't have enough personal history with either of those games to have anything worth saying. I might have a seed of insight about FNaF, but then I'm telling it mostly through the lens of someone who watched a handful of YouTubers play it once eight years ago, with a few Game Theory videos on top of it, and never managed to fall in love with what I was seeing.
@fishing_minigame You got me to Google that—good job. I don't know what to make of that situation, but it's pretty sad all around. Hope those close to him have been able to heal since then.

I'm seeing a slump in any sort of motivation to keep adding to this, so for now, this is it. Unless I really have something to say, this list will be vacant.
I want to use this space to be quite grateful for all of the attention this netted me, positive or otherwise. Obviously, I like it when others engage with my work. But more important to me, personally, is that I like the sense of community it fosters. If my growth, in any way, leads to the growth of someone else, I'll have done my job, even if I fucked anything up. So thank you very much.
