Melon's Top 50 Games of All Time [WIP]

The one immovable position is #1. The rest is in "I Remembered I Liked This One, So I Added It" order.

Favourite of all time. Plays lovely and tells a lovely story too. Also way better at anti-racism with robots than certain other PS4 games.
Danganronpa bad etc etc I know. I, however, can't help but adore this one. Solid ensemble cast, fun mysteries, delightful twists — this is DR at its best. How can you not have something nice to say to the game that put Akane Owari in the world?
None of my friends who I've recommended this to enjoyed this. I don't care. I see the truth. Wonderful camp fun at every turn, from dialogue to UI design.
The quintessential visual novel! Unfortunately a trendsetter for Uchikoshi-brand ableism, which you'll find in, like, any game he's made (though he's getting better)
When RGG Studio wants to make a good game, you better believe they're about to blow your damn mind. Impeccable character writing, dynamics and parallels form the backbone of an intricate mystery story about reacting to challenged beliefs. Special shoutout to the masterful "both" option between the tortured antagonist and the purely evil villain in one character.
I believe this is what the kids call "peak". The Yakuza series seamlessly transitions into RPG territory and gives us a damn fantastic story to boot
Made me sob as a tween and made me sob as an adult. Undyne was instrumental in finding out I'm a lesbian.
I hesitated in playing this for about two years until I finally caved. Man, Uchikoshi's good at being more character-driven. This rocks.
To this day I still tag Portal 2 spoilers online, even if the game is over a decade old by now. I just don't wanna risk ruining that twist for anyone.
On games I'd play and replay for hours as a child on my mom's work tablet... especially the box level. I love the box level so damn much. I don't know if this would've stuck with me for as long as it did if I hadn't played it at a formative age, but I'm glad it has.
The last two episodes suck dick and balls but I still can't be too harsh on it. This game changed my brain makeup forever. I can still quote the opening scene front to back
You know how it is: every Pokémon fan's favourite generation will be the one that was going on when they first met the franchise. I started playing after Pokémon GO, so I saw Gen 7 release and even bought a 3DS to play the games. The Ultra games are the full realisation of my dearest Alola, and for that, they're my favourite! (Except for the attempt at redeeming Lusamine. Didn't like that. I much preferred Mother Beast and "y'all are stupid!")

I went with my gut when deciding to play this — I'm famously horrible at FPS games, and even worse at stealth (which ended up making up a lot of my play style... the irony was not lost in me). Every day I'm glad I decided to go through. This was what made me fall in love with Arkane. Seriously underrated, even though I'm growing tired of the word.
I love murder mystery visual novels! I love picross puzzles! I love camp! This game seriously feels like it was extracted from my brain sometimes... I still long for the sequel they teased. C'mon, Mediatonic, now that Fall Guys made it big you can totally afford MBN2...
Everyone's favourite social game released in a time where real-world sociability was impossible! The free update model really killed my baby... I still hold out hope for them to say "wait guys, we were just kidding with the 'this is the last time we update the game' thing" someday.
The silliest things have the most heart and PowerWash is proof. I love you so so so much my baby
A lot of people online like to claim that Zero Time Dilemma is a thoroughly bad game, only enjoyable as "camp" or "a comedy". I disagree. While it does go over some especially goofy story beats, it also has the strength to sustain fascinating character writing and harrowing worst-case scenarios, all while carrying itself with Uchikoshi-brand grace. People judge ZTD on what it wasn't (the scrapped version that answered all of the fanbase's questions); I judge it on what it was. It was great.
Still haven't forgiven what this game did to my favourite characters AKA the Kumakuras, and I bitch about it so much you'd be forgiven if you forgot I like this game. I do! It's like we have our own little dysfunctional relationship, really...
Something very intimate about being essentially a rotting shell and relying on the kindness of others to stay afloat while in an enclosed space. Totally a child of the pandemic.
Trust me, I know about Paldea. It really is not the best-looking, or the best-performing, or the holder of the best dumb gimmick... but man, I had so much fun. I love the story! I love the characters! I love the school segments! I love the Pokémon — my overall favourite little beast changed this generation to Maushold, after Heliolisk reigned supreme for 5 years! I love dicking around on my trusty Miraidon! I wish so so so dearly that GameFreak was given proper time and resources to really make this one the best they could, because even through the jank it's so full of love...

Baby's first roguelike. I don't care a lot about the story, to be honest, but the gameplay's damn fun. Opened my eyes to a whole genre I'd been ignoring, and I'm glad it did. Also OST's a banger.
Death is a complicated subject to anyone alive, I find. Edith Finch navigates it with pure grace. There is no sequence in gaming more equal parts sweetly dreamlike and utterly dreadful than the bathtub scene. GOD that fucked me up.
My gateway drug into my adored murder mystery genre. I was OBSESSED with Edgeworth when I was 16. I'm listing the trilogy as a whole here, but my favourite is Justice For All because Case 4 was really damn good
I would be extremely unfair to this game if I hadn't included it. Sure, it aged like milk, the ending is horrible, and Chloe Price is one of my least favourite characters of all time... but man, can't help but leave a little spot in my heart for this one
What's better than this? Excellent soundtrack, beautiful level/character design, interesting lyric-based storytelling (I LOVE LOOKING TOO DEEP INTO LYRICS, GOD DAMN IT), Queen Latifah is there
Feels like being a child again. I did countless runs of the exact same story beats, but never found myself tired because there's just so much to go around! This game oozes love. Love for humanity, love for community, love for the planet... love for life. It's beautiful. Testosterone could have saved Nemmie.
The perfect sequel. Massively improves upon character writing and stories. Way more interesting character designs, and way more intuitive level design. Fresh look at the battling system, that would sometimes get really sloggish in 1, but through various updates like Latent Powers and overhauling concoctions got much, much smoother. Ship sections are fun. They did QoL updates in places you didn't even know there could be QoL updates for. A love letter to the indomitable human spirit. I didn't like the glossy UI at first but I got over it.
Masterful environmental storytelling, very "cozy" vibes as is popular to say nowadays too. Just a great game to pop on and play whenever things get to be too much.
I don't like horror games because I'm a wuss, but Devotion got me good. Absolutely unparalleled. Gets the vibe right, gets the critique right, gets the horror right. I had to look away during the self-mutilation scene and even just the auditory experience was absolutely horrifying.
