Games I've played in 2021and have thoughts on

I thought that I haven't played a ton of games this year, but it's actually pretty good, huh

Enter the Gungeon
Enter the Gungeon
Still the GOAT. I tried mods for it this summer, and it's been a blast. Also, starting a new save file was such a fresh experience, totally unexpected. Playing without Turbo or some guns is very exciting
Dark Souls III
Dark Souls III
I just love this game, it's so easy to get lost in, there's so much to discover, so many ways to have fun and conquer challenges. I think all the lore and story stuff is better than it has ever been, and I really enjoyed exploration here, even despite the fact that it's not a metroidvania. The best Dark Souls, don't @ me
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
I tried getting into this one like three times, and now I finally get it, and I love Disco Elysium. I never understood how to have fun with an RPG, and now it's sort of a branching path for me: I either become a fan of RPGs and finally become a DND fatanic I was always ment to be, or I start hating western Role-Playing Games even more, because nothing is as good...as Disco
Halo Infinite
Halo Infinite
Super fun and very ambitious game, brought down a bit by just how ambitious it is. I loved most of the campaign, although the bugs and the somewhat empty world were annoying, and the MP is beyond enjoyable. Gameplay-wise, I honestly can't say that I had more fun with any other Halo game before, but it's not a complete package just yet. But if this is the future of Halo, I am quite optimistic
Young Souls
Young Souls
The name is kinda ridicilous, but I loved what little I played of this one, and the visual style is amazing.
A Short Hike
A Short Hike
It's kind of amazing just how much I love this game. With how simple it is, you'd think that a guy that plays AAA blockbusters for most of the year like me would not have even attempted A Short Hike, but here we are. I love this one
Synthetik: Legion Rising
Synthetik: Legion Rising
One of the best and most enjoyable roguelikes whilst being one of the most baffling and frustrating. I really hope that S2 is not as bad as it looks
Deltarune: Chapter 1
Deltarune: Chapter 1
SO FUN AND SUCH A GOOD INTRO CHAPTER OMG I AM CRYING
Dead Space
Dead Space
Dead Space was a surprise for me, because, as a zoomer that didn't even have internet at the time of Dead Space's release, I saw this game as just another one of those "classic" games that everyone loves because it was pretty good at the time and because they played it when they were young, and that there's nothing remarkable or even that good about it. But Dead Space is amazing, if not a bit shoddy towards the end. I kinda hated playing through DS2, but I wish that the arenas from that game were more present in Dead Space 1, because the under-utilization of action is probably the biggest thing keeping DS1 from being a full masterpiece
Sable
Sable
The amount of times I've been taken out of the experience by bugs or pefrormance issues is insane in this game. I'm also pretty salty that a weird bug made me pick a final mask I didn't want because the ONLY ONE I wanted to choose was, for some reason, unchoosable.

But besides that, this is honestly a fantastic game that feels unlike anything else I've ever seen or played. I hope that Sable is ultimately succesfull enough for Shedworks to expand and make more fun experiences like this in the future.
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VII
This is game has the incredible power of being a complete rusted-ass piece of shit annoying little fucker you've ever seen, and also being a great friend that opens your mind to new possibilities and makes you appreciate things you never knew you would. The world and Cloud's story were my favourite parts, and visuals, too
Dying Light
Dying Light
Describing and articulating what is so good about Dying Light is hard as fuck, partly because it looks kinda bad from the outside, and the first immediate good thing about it is just how nice it feels, which, you know, is not a compelling argument. I wrote a little thing on DL trying to prove that it's good recently, and you should definitely check that out!
Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition
Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition
I loved parts of it, and honestly overall enjoyed it almost as much as DMC3, sometimes more. But it IS dissapointing as hell the way 4 turned out, honestly could've been a masterpiece with all the foundations it has
Hatred
Hatred
This is honestly one of the worst games I've played. Gameplay and presentation-wise, it's like a 4/10, and that's being generous. But the sheer edgy-ass fake-cynicism dripping from this game's unwashed maw is disgusting to witness, and leaves in you a desire to write a strongly-worded "Don't recommend" review on Steam. But the worst part is - this is exactly what the dipshits over at Destructive Creations wanted
Doom Eternal
Doom Eternal
Doom Eternal is the best shooter I've ever played, just by the virtue of not even being a classic FPS, but more of a puzzle-rythm game, where every move you make has to be calculated, but every desicion has to be made in the moment. Fun as hell, and super well-made
Hollow Knight
Hollow Knight
In a way this is probably one of the most successful souls-likes ever - pefrectly capturing both feelings of grand scale and mystery, and feelings of frustration over being completely lost and bashing your head against the wall of the first Dark Souls. With simple but effective controls, some fun mechanics and memorable characters and locals, Hollow Knight is indeed pretty good.
Katamari Damacy Reroll
Katamari Damacy Reroll
Katamari Damacy is just pure fun, very easy to enjoy and hard to forget because of just how unique and joyful it is. I did my second playthrough of it this year, and loved it even more. Sometimes the emotions it filled me with made me actually tear up
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening - Special Edition
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening - Special Edition
There's a lot to love in this game, but honestly bosess were my favourite thing that I also can't say anything bad about. I guess it would be nice if they either didn't have weapon-specific weaknesses, or that you could make educated guesses about them, but they are super fun to fight, and DMC3 might honestly have the second boss line-up of any game I've ever played (the first is MGR ofc)
Metro Exodus
Metro Exodus
It's weird finally writing something on this game, because while I adored the open worldiness here, the last level brings you back to metro, and is super dumb and boring, so, after 11 or so hours playing Exodus and being so close to finishing it, I dropped it. So, yeah. It's pretty good, but the bad stuff is mostly just issues they haven't fixed from the previous games, or just not playing to the new ideas' strenghts enough, so even enjoying this game is super frustrating at times
Halo 4
Halo 4
I get that it's not as good as 3 or whatever, but the hate this one gets is so obcene. It's a fun game with a pretty great story, though I will admit that the new enemies kinda suck, and the set pieces are not as good as some of the ones in 2 or 3
Half-Life
Half-Life
This was a real fun one to finally discover, because while it didn't age amazingly, it aged pretty gracefuly - with it's quailites kind of transformed from just good (which it totally is) to charmingly janky, and so Half-Life in 2021 is honestly just adorable
And sick!
Devil May Cry
Devil May Cry
It's very charming and I really apreciate it's innovations, but there's honestly not much reason to go back to it. To enjoy DMC 1, you should probably either be a big fan of the rest of the series, or be interested in this influencer that both reminds you of all the games that copied it, and facinates you with how different it is to all of them
Slime Rancher
Slime Rancher
Slime Rancher is a roller coaster in the worst way possible: it reels you in with goals you want to achieve, and a world you want to explore, but just as you start getting into it, the game stalls and doesn't give you any meaningful reward for your effort. Your endgame in Slime Rancher is just amassing as much slime variants as possible for the most profit on the slime-poo market, and soon enough the money made from that starts just piling up, not being used on anything fun or even that useful. There are a miriad of dumb desicions that hold this game back, but the core of it is really good, and the pure joy you feel at certain stages of playing SR is wonderful. Here's hoping the sequel will be better
Gato Roboto
Gato Roboto
To this day I can't fully get into Super Metroid and games like it, so I will forever respect Gato Roboto for shoving everything the core metroidvania experience has to offer into a package this condenced. The cat sounds are cute, too
Hades
Hades
Darkest Dungeon
Darkest Dungeon
Darkest Dungeon is really dissapointing, because it's one of those games that are incredibily easy to get into, but the more you play, the more barriers are put between you and fun gameplay, and the more you start feeling like you're just wasting your time. A real bummer
Halo 3
Halo 3
It's incredible gameplay-wise (although Infinite is better IMO), but the story is worse than Halo 2's, and this game honestly feels muted apart from the Scarab fights. MP was super fun doe
Friday Night Funkin'
Friday Night Funkin'
Super fucking cool music, and a nice style in general. I don't much care for rythm games, but as far as I can see, FNF is exactly what a non-fan like me would love: just some banging tunes and some vibes
Dark Souls: Remastered
Dark Souls: Remastered
I was a bit dissapointed with this game, as one would be if he was propagandized of how a game is the best thing ever for the better part of a decade. But Dark Souls 1 is still awesome, and I loved my time with it
Len's Island
Len's Island
Super addictive, combining the farming/building sim gameplay with some pretty alright dungeon-crawling in an interesting way. The beta made it look like the farming was kinda worthless though? So I'm not sure yet. Hope the full release will be as awesome as the hours I've already spent with it.
UPDATE
Yeah it's pretty good. It's somewhat barren in terms of content rn, but the devs are super cool and they are constantly adding little stuff and fixing bugs along the way. They even do polling on how to implement new features into the game. Such an awesome thing to see!
Frostpunk
Frostpunk
Honestly, the game is too scary (and restrictive and kinda dumb) for me to play, so yeah
Dead Space 2
Dead Space 2
I loved how this game improved on the shortcomings of Dead Space 1, but, in pursuit of something new, Dead Space 2 brought a lot of new problems to the table, and is a worse and less enjoyable game for it, IMO
Spelunky
Spelunky
Kinda just can't enjoy this one. It feels like whatever I do I just end up eating shit and not really having that much fun improving on eating it
Spiritfarer
Spiritfarer
I loved playing this game when it was all about just doing errands for the spirits and listening to their life's story, and some of them are genuinely very touching. But this is ultimately a farm simulator, and with any farm simulator comes routine, which is poison for this type of game. With a long ways to go, I just didn't have the motivation to finish this one
Lake
Lake
Lake is pretty shitty judging by the demo, but I commend it for making my brain go brr in coming up with a game just like this one expect it's Manhunt
Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part One
Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part One
It was way too fucking hard when I played it, this demon spirit enhansing mechanic is used pretty poorly, IMO. I liked when this DLC was pushing me, but certain parts of it were just pushing me off the fucking chair and pissing on my battered forehead, which was not fun at all
Tekken 7
Tekken 7
I finally understood what it's like playing Tekken with a friend for a long time, and it has been the best. I will forever be grateful to Tekken for not relying too much on precice inputs and whatnot to have fun, because this more intuitive type of a fighting game is exactly what a scrub like me needs to enjoy them
Florence
Florence
I was really dissapointed with how simplisitc this narrative was. I get that it's not SUPPOSED to be some grand narrative of how relationships form and dissolve, but there's really next to nothing to sink your teeth in here, and it's not really 'cause of the format - I just don't think the execution was solid enough

This is a cool feature. I've played 8 of these.

I always though Dead Space 1 was way better than 2. It's one of my favorite games but then growing up I was a huge fan of Event Horizon so I guess spaceship horror is just my jam.
