The worst aspect of every game I've played
List created on January 3rd 2024
Honestly there are many of these games that I truly love, so it was difficult to come up with criticisms for each of them. Some of those sound more like petty nitpicks.
And I really couldn't find any flaw at all for those games:
- Doom 2016
- Portal 1 & 2
- Gris
- Antichamber

The egg thieves were a pain in the ass to catch.
The trolley minigame was a bit annoying. It's kinda cheap how the bad camera makes you notice the obstacles at the very last moment.
The camera is awful, it's always giving you the worst angles imaginable in combat, so you can never see the enemies...
The lack of checkpoints inside dungeons makes dying against the otherwise fun Bosses very upsetting, because you have to travel all the way back to the Boss room every time you die.
The way to progress was sometimes really obscure.
I got stuck for a few hours at some points:
- Right after the time skip, when Sheik hints you towards Kakariko's graveyard, I had no idea you could move the tombstones.
- When you need to play the song of storms inside the windmill.

The 3-days cycle.
The map feels too empty.
The Sea should have been smaller, or there should have been more meaningful islands scattered across the map.

The Wolf form is disappointing.
I wish you acquired new moves as Wolf Link throughout the game, just like Human Link.

Since they had to convert motion controls into button inputs, some actions feel somewhat janky to use in the HD remaster.
I'm mainly thinking about the inputs to throw bombs, it's not very ergonomic

The selling point of BOTW is the huge emphasis on exploration. But it felt unfulfilling at times, between the Shrines that all look the same, and the useless Korok Seeds.
Honestly, this flaw is common to ALL Xenoblade games, but your character is wayyyyy too slow, it's criminal.
The regions are absolutely huge, and your character is as fast as a snail.

I dislike many of the characters in the party, especially the protagonist.
I don't like the chain attack system.
They take such a huge portion of the combat's total length, and they become repetitive really quickly.
And the problem lies in the fact that you HAVE to use them, because otherwise it will take forever to take down some of the Bosses which are massive damage sponges.

There aren't enough additions in each route to warrant replaying the second part of the story over & over.
Routes A, B C & D are way too similar despite the new cutscenes in route B to recontextualize the story.

The hacking minigame wasn't so fun.
It's annoying that you can't aim while remaining still.
There were really tough hacking sections in route C, especially when you need to find the key in Flooded City.
There were a shit ton of locked chests to hack in that tower, it was tedious.

There should have been a lot more different combat themes to lessen the repetitiveness of the music during fights.
The fact that you can negate the difficulty of any Boss by entering the fight with as many healing items as you want... It's kind of stupid.
The fact that the game isn't clear enough about the third semester being locked behind Maruki's confidant.
At some point they tell you: "hey maybe you should hang out with Maruki before he leaves the school!" but it should have been made clearer that you need to level him up, along with Akechi & Kasumi.
It's really easy to miss out on the 3rd semester + the true ending if you play the game for the first time.

Double Techs aren't all equally good, unfortunately.
Many of them are too weak and aren't worth using at all.

I never got used to the User Interface.
It's too tiny, not ergonomic nor aesthetic.

The money is useless in this game!
Give us something to spend our money on, ffs.

I hate random encounters from the bottom of my heart.
I'll just repeat what I said for Pokémon FireRed...

After Sayori's death, there isn't any moment in the story that reaches the same emotional impact.
The fact that you need to have your crafting table 5 feets away from you everytime you need to build or break something.
The constant unavoidable damage in Verboten Domain was annoying.
You can't do anything about it except tanking it. sigh
You can't do anything about it except tanking it. sigh
You can't respec a lot, that's really inconvenient.
It's very easy to miss side quests, because you have to do things in a specific order, and you need to avoid completing some parts of the game too early.
The distances between stagways were too large. I wish there were more teleporters.
I wish there was a map so you could mark points of interest.
Completing levels is really unrewarding.
After spending so much time & brain power on a level, your only reward is unlocking more levels...

The gameplay never really evolves throughout the game.
They never introduce new mechanics to change things a bit.

Since each weapon is linked to one specific upgrade item, and some of those upgrade items are a lot stronger than others (for example, the Spinach that increases your damage by 50%), you'll always feel "obliged" to get the weapons that are associated to those items.
Each run, I always took Spinach (+50% damage), Empty Tome (-40% cooldown) and Duplicator (+2 projectiles) because those items are just THAT good, and so I often went for the weapons associated to them (Fire Wand, Magic Wand & Lightning Ring) which made each run considerably less unique.

The gun sections feel out of place.
Since the whole game takes place in the same location, you'll often find yourself using the same pathways several times throughout your adventure. There comes a time when running across the city doesn't feel as fresh anymore.
The 1st game didn't have this problem since it was a succession of levels, instead of an Openworld. (Not that I prefer it to Catalyst)

I wasn't invested in the story. The Greek mythology isn't my cup of tea...
It takes some time to get accustomed to the tank controls.
The game takes some time to really take off.
Exploring the Wood Side apartments isn't as fun as the rest of the game.

The reused assets maps from Silent Hill 2.
The Khan Maykr boss fight was insanely hard compared to everything else. It almost made me ragequit, and I had less motivation for the rest of the game after I finally beat it.
It left a really sour taste in my mouth.

After some point (I'd say midway through the game), you will have probably experienced every race available on the map.
If you continue playing to get the Burnout License, or even the Elite License, you'll have no choice but to go through races you've already done.

Having to wait for the sand level to decrease on Ash Twin was a bit annoying.
I hate how well hidden the DLC is. I missed it, and I couldn't go back once I beat the Final Boss.
And EVERYONE keeps telling me how perfect the DLC is, and how it's the best thing in the History of Gaming, and blah blah blah... so it makes me even more upset that I missed it.

The gameplay in general is boring.
You just collect acorns as you progress through boring platforming sections, with boring combat.
