Weird Japan

Tally how many times I say weird/strange/odd/quirky/obtuse in the notes.

all Suda51 games should probably be on here tbh.
Twin Peaks, zombies, open-world.
Sometimes games seem a bit TOO open to even know where to begin. Regret not playing this one more when I had a Wii.
So bad it's good 80s-90s tough guy presentation with surprisingly fun gameplay. This is like every corny action game/movie's self-aware cousin.
Makes me think of Moon Remix RPG if it were a parody of Zelda... and capitalism.
Quirky loveletter to RPGs with all the grindyness and odd story and locales.
Do chores and make your owners love you. Somehow it's actually quite fun.
The platformer/action RPG aspect of this isn't that great, but the monster creation is super super fun.
This is on here for completeness sake only. Doesn't actually need an intro does it?
Shadow Tower + sci-fi
Musou and aerial dragon combat... coupled with one of the darkest and strangest stories ever told.
Essentially a strategy war game with a cutesy presentation.
Kiss everyone!
God simulation (sorta)
Story focused adventure game
Evolve your animal in a cubey world.
This is the only one out of the series I played but it's a solid foundation. Basically take pictures of ghosts to "kill" them.
Grab and flick gameplay.
More weird adventure goodness
Two-player only adventure or at least it's not fun at all one-player.
It's actually been a very long time since I played this but from what I remember it's a puzzle game with a focus on terraforming.
Insect simulator with Ryuichi Sakamoto OST.
Action rpg platformer thing.
Maybe the best of earlier experimental From Soft. Hard to describe the various experimentation going on in this Action RPG, but you can start with the soundtrack.
If you've seen the Devilman anime, it's basically that but a game.
Most of these games are hard to describe but this might take the cake. It's like taking SMT further down the acid trip.
Platformer with his theme song constantly playing in the background.
Block pushy game
Evolution RPG.
Pretty obtuse adventure game.
Janky action game from the creators of SMT.
Strategy RPG with a nice aesthetic
Furry astronaut adventure game set on a strange planet with almost rhythm-action style battles.
Sort of Rogue-like JRPG with all the heroes from Climax games. Still wish they could have legally put Alundra in here.
Jumping Flash but fetch quest. Jumping Fetch
??? I'm sorry... I'm very much at a loss...
Still not sure what was going on here.
Essentially feels like a precursor to Deadly Premonition. Open world and very Twin Peaks and very jank.
Armored Core but if it was medieval and robots were basically created through means of magic. I still prefer Armored Core, but it's an interesting approach.
The racing RPG.
Quirky Zelda-like with an awesome OST
I really like the presentation of this dungeon crawler. Wish they had English translations.
Maybe the quintessential "weird" game these days. Randomly traverse dreams. Can't actually find a real "point" to this one, but it's definitely an experience.
Monster fighting but everyone's a spinning top.
Action/RPG Battle Angel Alita
First person horror adventure, like if King's Field switched genres maybe.
I have a soft-spot for this one even if it has all the hallmarks of a budget title.
Basically first-person pinball? Only basically.
First person dungeon crawl with randomized dungeons in a strange post-apocalyptic world.
Junko Kawano (Suikoden) had a major role in this. Definitely has a saturday morning cartoon feel.
The quintessential goofy RPG/Platformer, although I'd say there's more RPG elements than actual RPG.
An interesting spin on the RPG formula. Worth checking out as a curiosity.
Action RPG with an obnoxious but awesome OST and presentation.
Some of the worst (amazing) computer graphics I've ever seen in basically the successor to the Majin Tensei strategy games.
First person adventure game with mazes.
Not even an RPG really, it's basically a parody and loveletter to the JRPG genre.
Noah's Ark in the future with all the anime trappings.
First person detective style adventure.
The side RPG is where the real weirdness comes in here. I still want to figure that thing out.
A game geared towards kids but actually terrifying in its presentation.
Traverse a beautifully pre-rendered city with the occasional dungeon crawl. Lots of eastern mysticism and symbolism.
First person horror game.
Incredible toon machine with a Ghosts and Goblins skin. Pretty cool for fans of either style of gameplay.
Trap simulation action/adventure. Created its own subgenre which I think got better with the two subsequent games but this one is just the weirdest and jankiest of the bunch.
The Chef JRPG.
Open world caveman simulator. Great soundtrack and a mostly pretty relaxing experience.
