Top 50 Video Game Soundtracks

Tried to keep it 2 per series. Or else I would litter this list with Final Fantasy/Xeno/Trails. Ranking is subject to change as the years pass and when I play new games.

While I obviously haven't played all these games, you've definitely got some great picks haha.

So SO happy to see Skyward Sword on here- I remember the Wii release came with a gold music CD containing the OST. Tough to pick a Zelda OST, but that's arguably the best one.

Chrono Trigger deserves to be higher! An absolutely masterpiece.

I understand the love for Transistor, though I'm not a huge Jazz fan so I personally wasn't able to get into it.

Undertale had a few great tracks, but idk if the whole OST is Top 50 material. I do need to replay it though.

Other great ones worth listening to:
-Deus Ex
-Where the Water Tastes Like Wine
-DKC games (all of them, though DKC2 and TF are the best).

@RedBackLoggd Thanks! Was hard picking just 50 when I could've gone farther. I think SS would be the best one. Although very hard to pick yea, need to play more in the series.

Trueeee and I agree. I think why I put it lower is because I used to place it higher. But I've placed it lower to give other titles a fighting chance if you will. Always see it super high on other people's list which I respect greatly.

And yeah same. Not really a jazz person either. Its the same deal with rap. However, there are some tracks I love from the genres. Wish I resonated with Transistor's OST more.

Yessss. Please do. I had to do every route in Undertale to witness some spectacular tracks hidden there. You wouldn't otherwise see on a first blind playthrough I think.

Deus Ex I really should play. Only played Human Revolution more than a decade ago lol. The rest I'll get around to. Never heard of Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, but you've piqued my interest. DKC games I seriously need to listen/ and play. Never finished one yet.

Great list! Every game I recognise has an OST that I at least like a lot; I'd say of your picks I love FF VIII, the Nier games, Tales of Arise, Ys VIII and The Witcher 3 the most.

I also like seeing Ys IX so high up there. I remember some people on the internet were outright hating on its soundtrack when it released, though I think it's very good.

For sure, even Top 100 wouldn't crack the surface!

Hey man, it's all opinions in the end haha. Plus, I'm sure on any given day you could rearrange this list depending on your mood.

Wait you say that, but you put Transistor's OST in your Top 50?

Oh wow, didn't realize they outright hid music in the game to specific pathways. Wonder if that was fair to the composer!

Deus Ex is in desperate need of a mod, but it's still arguably the greatest game I've ever played. If you're fine with mods, it's absolutely playable and worth it for the story.

WTWTLW is trash, but the soundtrack was amazing and worth a listen. I've been trying to get the vinyl for some time now, but it's so hard b/c it was produced in limited quantities.

Brooooooooooo, get on that! DKC is a masterpiece of the platformer genre!

@Penumbra Thank you! Those ones you mentioned I love a lot. Glad we share those in common.

Aye I felt it wasn’t deserved the hate that is. Seemed too exaggerated. So I put YS IX very high to give it more appreciation. It has a solid OST that I would say is equally as strong as VIII. Glessing way, Norse Wind, In Profile, On Belfry are just some of my favs from the game.

@RedBackLoggd Yup! Always interesting to see my fellow friends here with different OST lists. I’ve enjoyed seeing different rankings/favs for their VGM.

Even if I don’t vibe with the OST(Just some from Transistor’s music). There are some tracks which I can’t help but praise which elevate the game’s whole OST. And Transistor spoke to me about that. The ending theme was powerful to me and while i'm used to orchestral, violin, piano, vocal noteworthy pieces from other games. For some reason Transistor was subtle in a way that’s difficult to describe. Paper Boats, We All Become, The Spine, Old Friends and more are just some of my favorites from there.

I think it was intended since Toby Fox composed the ost while making the game.

Oh i'm cool with mods. I’ll probably use an hd mod to make the game look better on the eyes for me. Will play through it someday. There’s quite a bit more for crpgs to play but Deus Ex is definitely on my list.

Hope you get the vinyl someday! Masterpiece huh… We’ll see about that when I review it! Or I could very well join you in saying that lmao

For sure, you've inspired me to create my own OST list now haha :)

Well I can't argue with that logic, and you give some good tracks to support your argument. I guess the thing that brought down the OST, for me at least, was that I didn't think it really fit the game's world. Idk if you would agree with that, but it doesn't seem like a Jazzy society- it's this weird half-cyberpunk/half-Fritz Lang Metropolis combo that felt like it should've been more synthy. Idk. I will say I absolutely loved Red's singing.

Oh wow, dude is talented- didn't even know he did his own score.

Yeah, especially get one that fixes the lighting and improves the map as the vanilla is atrocious in both departments.

How did you do that crossout? Been trying to do it in my reviews.

@RedBackLoggd Hell yeah! Nice! Ah I can see where you're coming from and in that case yeah I agree. When I first started the game I was expecting synthwaves and well electro tracks to come about. When it didn't. I think the atmosphere changed. Not a bad thing by any means, was just my first impression lol. Yesss Red's singing is wonderful!

Yup! I was surprised he composed the OST while making the game. Don't see that often for indies.

Oh so Backloggd turns out has their own formatting guide. This can be done anytime in the log editor when you make a review or edit a review. Just a lil bit above the review. To the far right side corner. Its below logging in the end date for when you finish a game during a month. Click "Formatting" and it should show you how to bold, italicize, underline, crossout and putting in hyperlinks. I kid you not I thought you couldn't click that lol. Was surprised something popped out. Hope this helps!
