Best songs from games I played in 2023

this has been a bit of a ritual for me since... idk, since a long time, where near the end or after the new year i'll listen to the songs from games i've beaten throughout the year and chose my favorites.

while i do enjoy music in general, video game music specifically is really important to me, it lets me reconnect with what i was thinking, with what i felt, with the good and bad parts, it's saved me more than once and i really really enjoy it even if it makes me look like a terrible nerd.

so this year i decided i'm gonna share this here too, it's actually a much better place than twitter to archive it, so i'm also gonna add a bit of my thoughts about each track alongside with a link for it. i'm not super well-versed in music so a lot of my comments won't be much more than a wordier version of "i like it" but that's how it goes sometimes. also shout outs to vgmdb for keeping a good track of soundtrack releases and their composers!!

so in any case, i guess this is also a "games i played in 2023" list but with a bit more.

(also because it's youtube maybe this list will have a lot of broken links in the future, the names of the songs are there so i'm able to replace them if i go back to this)

The Darkness of Eternity - Nobuo Uematsu
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CePstt0-0PY
starting this year cheating a bit since i've always loved this song. i love when nobuo's infatuation with prog rock
comes through on his songs and this is one of the best examples of it, absolute gem of a track
Sensitive Parasite - Koyama Tsutomu & Capriccio Project
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHJjBlLqPsk
otome games universally have some really really good music that get a bit grating due to overuse. nevertheless, the rare tracks, the ones that play only in specific events, are usually bangers and it's no difference here. i pondered putting the Opening or the Ending here as they're also both great, but i think this one is a bit cooler to share since it's really unique
Seymour Battle - Nobuo Uematsu
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33IR1eUUC08
a big suprise while playing FFX this year was how much i loved like 90% of the soundtrack, it's so so good. but unfortunately i've always loved the Seymour battle theme even before playing it and it's still unbeatable i looove those keyboards
FFVII Special Arrange Medley -Theatrhythm FBL Arrange- - Arranger: Yoshitaka Hirota

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCaJJ2suCSs

a really fun arrange that isn't that groundbreaking as it uses the expected songs, but still weaves them together very nicely
High Stakes Club - DEATHNYANN

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVSUZR5vNcs

i'm linking this and not the official videoclip because yeah that vampire lady is what made me play fortnite for an entire battle pass just to get the girl that used that drawing as a stamp on her shirt (the girl is also pretty cool herself), so this song carries some very sweet nice memories with it for me, especially since this was such a chill time with my bf
They are Crying - Yusuke Tsutsumi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AMl8_eUmNY

beautiful harrowing goth soundtrack that does include some surprisingly upbeat and cute tunes, but this one shows it's core pretty well. a repeating chorus that builds up in instruments and drama until it crashes down into silence. fun fact: like 90% of the songs are sung in my native language, brazilian portuguese with an extremely heavy japanese accent!!
Tower Knight - Arranger: Bill Hemstapat
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwdUrweK5-w
i famously dislike what bluepoint thinks demon's souls is, and that extends to its hired arranger. maybe it is some dumb attachment to the old game, but i still am not able to forgive how butchered the nexus music was. this was not my somber game, it was the new AAA epic. yeah i'm CRANKY about this!!!!

they didn't really ruin everything though and tower knight is good
Falling Petals - No official credits yet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdR7CDFvqLY
i was always a big fan of FE dramatic tracks like don't speak her name and engage delivers it beautifully. it's both energetic and melancholic, really heightens every map it played on. though in general this game's soundtrack is fantastic, i could put like 20 songs here
Lounge Car - Joel Corelitz, Troupe Gammage
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4iP2BwydRI
chill song for a very cute free game. nothing much to say, i like it and i enjoy that they got a composer to do the music at all
Nocturne - Bill Kiley, Justin Stander
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O6dHQ_bwW0
yeah i know i'm picking the classical inspired piece in a game full of club techno music, but my ears simply weren't able to pick up on them. i don't think they're bad, they're probably really good, but i really couldn't really feel it. this one stuck with me though, maybe i'm just a snob
The Final Battle - Grant Kirkhope
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eKK3CZPKac
grant's final epic of silly goofy music really shines through a game that has a lot of memorable tracks. i love the rising chaos and the interludes to a silly flute solo that is there probably just because he can do that
Port Blue - Kazumi Totaka
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH04T8Tsdwo
oh no she's picking the metal track in a game that mostly features chill music she's literally impossible. but!! this one and marine fortress create such a contrast with the rest of the game that of course they make a huge impression everytime i replay it
Beautiful Blasphemy -
Andrew Hulshult
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRUKuVBnmh4
oh no she's picking the goth organ track in the ost filled with metal bangers and nobody's stopping her at all. i have no idea why i'm like this but for this one all i can just say i'm enamored with church organ music sorry!!!
Polygon Game World - Kazuo Sawa
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHYxa4uTeIs
not a lot of songs stuck out on this game for me, but this one is super chill and cute and fits the stage very nicely
Player Select - Kenichi Arakawa
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVsnpsLwpf0
sometimes the best song in the game is the character select screen song nothing anyone can do about it
Phon Coast - Hitoshi Sakimoto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LY-s8aLZIso
i used to not really care for XII's music whenever it showed up in theatrhythm and lists but having played the game wow they're REALLY good, like jesus christ these are all around bangers what the heck was i thinking??? phon coast is my favorite place probably and the music helped it a lot, it's so cheerful but also so distinctly Hitoshi Sakimoto with it's chorus and march and everything i love it
Still Dawn - Makoto Tomozawa
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPHmBqrqBq4
ok stop EVERYTHING i just discovered this song was a replacement to an equally cheesy and incredible piece of J-Rock music called Yume de Owarasenai by Fumitaka Fuchigami and i'm honestly amazed because Still Dawn is still perfectly cheesy rock music and now i love them both so so much
Theme Kitako - inconclusive, lots of composers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnkaSlSLKa0
nothing special really, but the theme of the Gegege Kitaro inspired girl is pretty fun but then again maybe i'm biased to like occult girls as i'm wont to do
Master Kohga Battle - No official credits yet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5v5NEhhnug
i was gonna put colgera here but you know what i'm not going to because this remix of kohga's theme from BotW with it's eletric guitar, shamisen and violin combo, alongside the chanting, is simply too incredible. it DID make every kohga fight a real treat so it deserves it
Mr. Big - Kärtsy Hatakka, Kimmo Kajasto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ppE4-Og9dI
i feel like not really paying attention to max payne's soundtrack is perhaps kind of part of the experience but also this goofy song for the chase sequence is really funny
Starlight Zone - Masato Nakamura
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rwH_2Desp0
it's always gonna be starlight zone
Ascension - Masayoshi Soken
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDD_3Nl9X_k
i know this game has titan lost but i just really like strong pieces like this that have this regal feeling to them also i just love this fight in the game!!! wish XIV had more piece like this that aren't outright just really "epic" chorus pieces. hope Soken brings back something from XVI with him
Toad Highlands - Motoi Sakuraba
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=806KyO4lzcU
i love these older motoi sakuraba tracks because they're so chill and this one is so iconic, it stuck to me since i was very little
Burning Hearts Burning ANGEL - Naofumi Hataya, Takenobu Mitsuyoshi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDWsZh9qXsQ
my first contact with this song was via a dumb sidequest in Phantasy Star Online where you would shoot a movie for a director and could chose a myriad of Sega songs for it's soundtrack and this song was one of them so i've been anxiously waiting like 17 years to play this game just because of this song. it rocks!!!!
Final Boss - No official credit yet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wda0U-PSRl4
i don't think Pikmin ever used straight up metal for anything in the game but i may be misremembering. stil!!! really good and very energetic for a surprisingly difficult last boss fight
Encounter with the Seven Heroes - Kenji Ito
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UNfXApv51M
remixed to infinity, it's THE romancing saga 2 song and with good reason. i feel lacking in music terminology to explain why i think it's so good but i guess i just think the melody is super strong and sets the mood nicely to these 7 fallen heroes that you have to kill
Hot-Blooded Man (Submarine Castle) - Konami was always notoriously bad at individually crediting their composers even on soundtrack releases
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTZ-KV56deE
every goemon dungeon has this proto dynamic soundtrack thingy where the song will increasingly get more instruments the further you are in and some like this one are really cool where they start extremely somber and just finish as a full-blown fanfare.
Magic Man Stage - Naoshi Mizuta

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhuJ2fjSb_o

& Bass entire soundtrack is a bit off but this one takes the cake because aside from being very fun and goofy it also builds pretty nicely on it's instruments until it loops for real
Galaxy Man - Yu Shimoda
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdDbbzuq1vY
i've always loved this silly track since 2009 it's so hype and so beep bop it's no wonder so many YTPMV used it
Vs. Yin-Yarn - Tomoya Tomita
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRXrISYnCLI
i know this game has tons of chill tracks that represent it better but also this is a pretty energetic remix of the boss theme from from Kirby 64 and i love Kirby 64 so what can i do
Nitro Man - Manami Matsumae
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsfjSBeKJRE
i remember when everyone thought this one was going to be a wily castle theme from the trailers but it wasn't and then the game had a very experimental soundtrack because it had a lot of different composers working on it. i like it better now but this one is still my favorite
Blast Man Stage - Marika Suzuki
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gpLL6JMrdU
i didn't really vibe with the soundtrack in this game. it's fine but it's also nothing special to be honest. this is the best one probably
Armored Armadillo Stage - Setuo Yamamoto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAGRVDZdB3Q
everyone my age knows this one
Bubble Crab Stage - Yuki Iwai
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOe3baIm3Ys
i loved this in X5 but this is the original so i'm gonna respect it
Mega Man X3 - Kinuyo Yamashita
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhSWh7XR66o
wow everything in this game sucks!! this is at least a fun song even if the loop is abysmally short
Cyber Peacock Stage - Toshihiko Horiyama
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8mG5mpHMKA
a lot of iconic songs in X4, but i love how this complements this weird time trial stage so much, it's very space-y
Dynamo Theme - Naoto Tanaka, Naoya Kamisaka, Takuya Miyawaki
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrAA09Mu2Uo
this sounds like deep purple so it's automatically good
Laser Institute - Akemi Kimura (Naoto Tanaka)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nOsZdPvGdw
plenty of weird songs in X6 that i actually quite enjoy. i love how the 3 PS1 games all have distinct styles that are all great in their own way. i love how light and chill this one is, that bass is divine
Our Blood Boils - vs. Sigma 1st - Teruo Konishi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nugJBnupDnY
i'm genuinely surprised i was able to like this game also this Sigma theme goes insanely hard
VS. Lumin ~ The First Form - Yuko Komiyama
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_UacVrzBKQ
i guess if it wasn't obvious by this point i just love church organ songs and this one goes so nicely with the first phase of the last boss fight, made X8 an unforgettable game for me
The Forbidden Castle - Hiroyuki Iwatsuki
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWD6gpia81k
very pop very 90s i like this one a lot
Cave - Atsuhiro Motoyama
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSC47hGikY0
this sounds so much like a pokemon GB song i think the composer wasn't super comfortable with the GBA chip yet, but the composition is still great so it's not a big deal
Red Canyon - Yumiko Kanki
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ir4GtGVS7k
Mute City or even Big Blue might be the better songs but this is the only game where i can listen to Red Canyon and i greatly enjoy it so it goes on this list, the bass is way too good
Flutter VS The Gesellschaft - Makoto Tomozawa
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9v07PY14Zyw
this song plays for 30 seconds in a cutscene it's super elaborate but you'll never listen to more than that, it doesn't even play during the battle that gives it it's title!!!! yet this is THE mega man legends song in crossover games so i guess it thankfully got its just deserts because i love it, it's what made me want to play this game
Four Seasons - Ryoji Yoshitomi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrs_6tFPoGo
i was gonna put the uncompressed version here but you know what, the fact that this was done via the GBA chip is honestly half of why this song is so impressive. the other half is that it's really good enka
LONGING - Gackt
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wis0CaoJ4lE
oh no i tricked you into listening to Gackt how devious of me
The Chandeliers (6-2) - Konami again!!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsgffC9KfSY
i know the first stage song is definitely a banger and the most famous one, but i really like this regal one and i never see it anywhere so here it is
Praying Hands (Cloud Castle) - Konami Kukeiha Club are the actual credits i guess but i still dislike it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6mftPOyQX0
i almost skipped this game but it's actually really fun, much better than the first and the soundtrack goes incredibly hard
Calling From Heaven - Michiru Yamane
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUYaEEl8Y-A
i know Reincarnated Soul is THE Bloodlines song but this one is underrated and i like it a whole lot, very melancholic while keeping an ever present percussion
The City - i wonder if it's the konami sound group again
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORuIkpSL3uc
really fun game that feels more like mega man than castlevania, all songs are very cute but i like how shady this one tries to sound
Op. 13 - Jigokuguruma Nakamura
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1dRzjA_Xlc
i don't caaaare this IS the best song in the game rondo of blood IS all of the 90's in different forms and this one is hella cool
Encounter - Takeharu Ishimoto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rfq5DozcHNs
i've loved Takeharu Ishimoto's varied style since BBS and while CC does lean a lot more into rock and percussion, you can still feel his style on every song in the game. still, my favorite one is this metal-ass song with these insanely cool guitar riffs that are like 99% of the song and it rocks
The Runaround pt. III -
Tsuyoshi Sekito
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IifD2S1N3Iw
incredible 5-part piece that changes alongside the dungeon, while it feels weird to pick one specific section they're all very different and this upbeat jazz tune is definitely my favorite
Rough (Midori) - T's Music
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6e0EoyLt5M
all of this game's sound track slaps if i'm being honest, but this rock piece is just way too fun
Last Battle - Kenji Ito
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx7z3CNELGw
i love Kenji Ito's heavier pieces especially when he brings the midi keyboard at full force, he's so real for that
Still Alive - Lisa Miskovski
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhFrt_Ca39w
i'm sure there are great songs in this soundtrack but once again i couldn't really pay attention to most of them? i think i might have some issues with this kind of music... in any case the ending theme is very good so it's all good
Sand Sanctuary Zone - Tee Lopes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQF-P5bUNG0
sometimes this game has songs that fall a bit flat and other times it just has incredible compositions like this one, but what else would i expect from Tee Lopes except excellency
Fungi Mines Stage - no official credits yet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEm0tZ43BT4
this game is actually really good in the sound department and i did consider putting the funny piranha plant song here but i love how moody this is, 2d mario music never sounded like this. the brass addition from the elephant power-up complements it really well
Continental Train - Takayuki Nakamura
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaUWqp-xxhI
we didn't touch the rpg mode so maybe there's some bangers there, but this one was my favorite from the arcade mode really nice synth-y dnb
Waterfall - Hiroki Kikuta
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Eu_zij3Rz8
being the game's director and also it's composer, i love how Kikuta made an enormous song for the normal battle theme. you barely hear the second half in-game, but it's opening with interesting percussion and instrumentation made every battle a joy to engage with
Psychic Girl - Hidenori Iwasaki
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETCoqyIWPwQ
this whole game's soundtrack is incredible actually, i'd half a mind to put almost all the songs here but i guess by now it's pretty obvious that there is a specific goth-y occult vibe to songs that i like a lot, it's hard to not be enthralled by the strong harpsichord opening, followed by the chorus and theremin coming in and of course it's organ section
Last Battle -T260G- - Kenji Ito
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqVEfCisiuM
ok this another one of those games where basically every single song is a masterpiece and there are gothier songs bound to Asellus (my favorite character!!) that i do love but jesus christ is it hard to beat whatever Kenji Ito cooked with this techno beat. but really every last boss theme is different and thematically appropriate to it's character story "style" so literally all of them are extremely great
Boss - Jun Chikuma
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4GFSMBAhkI
super sentai tokusatsu ass song for the boss theme i'm not complaining and it does fit the game very well even when you're fighting against the giant clown head
Track 25 (Babylon Hotel) - Masahiko Hagio
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzvGCGndHE4
really REALLY aggressive soundtrack with lots of ambient sounding tracks that range from unsettling to scary. this is one of the more melodic tracks and it's the one i remember the most because Babylon Hotel is undoubtedly the best part of this game and this song gives it the perfect vibe
Welcome to Booster Tower - Yoko Shimomura
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MK0KyLAOsGw
i've always always loved this track even on the SNES, but oh my god. Shimomura has always been exceedingly great at arranging her own tracks and this is no exception. the additions to the melody, the additional violin section so that this loop isn't as short as the original, i don't know she's literally a genius i love her work so much
Burning Halloween Town - Manabu Namiki
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJdCpnRKZl8
this whole game is my vibe personified, but this one song gains extra points with me because i could totally see it as a Bemani track unchanged, maybe Pop'n Music. in any case, this Cave composer always dishes out great music for them, and this was no exception
Lake Stage - Masaki Izutani
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCeiRd8J_W0
i didn't enjoy this game's soundtrack so much but i guess old arcade games are hit or miss on this, so i chose the one i remembered the most
Sky Dance - Masaki Izutani
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLdSuLnUGmw
this is much better even though it's the same composer from Sengoku Ace! the bass and synth combined with the traditional japanese instruments reminds me of Goemon a bit
???? - ????
????????
ok this game does not have it's soundtrack online ANYWHERE so i'm just gonna say it's the new goth girls theme it's goth-y and cool idk how to even direct anyone to it!!!
Walking on the Land of Flame (Stage3) - Masaharu Iwata
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmJY0iFDjiE
this game has like 3 versions of the same soundtrack (original, 1.5 and arrange) and they're honestly all great, but i really love this one, the chanting and violin really brings it to life, alongside with what i think might be a sitar? (might be wrong on this...) anyway it's incredible and i love it
Portait of Hope - unable to find the specific composer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhLNS__Ivtw
this game's soundtrack is pretty chill, but i'm pretty enamored with this one that breaks its more focused section with what i could only aptly describe as a "hopeful melody"
Arcadian Vampire - Tenpei Saito, Vocals: Masako Okochi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6K_7E5qkPk
Disgaea base and vocal themes are always a treat and this one's no exception. while i thought this game's tracks were a bit on the few side and maybe not as good as the last 3, they're still great Tenpei Saito is so freaking talented i'm always surprised he mostly only does songs for NIS and nobody else
Now die, for the debt you have accumulated - ZUN
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzt87vI6YT0
ZUN's first game soundtrack is actually surprisingly fun. while the PC-98 chip screeches a bit too loud for me to be able to mentally pick apart every song, this one for the last boss of the Hell route stood out to me due to it's catchy melody
Complete Darkness - ZUN
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GycqkUWAJ1c
still very simple by the series standard, but it did stand out to me a lot while playing, fits the hectic final boss a lot!!
Ultema The Perfect Body! - Masaharu Iwata
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbpxYTP0WUg
even though "Ultima's Perfection" is probably what they meant i love the japanese title so much. i've been infatuated with this song since the XIV Ivalice Raid and this year's raid tier having an incredible remix of it just made me love it even more. this game is full of iconic themes and i love how somber they feel

ff9's soundtrack goes so insanely hard. the one you listed and the final boss theme in particular are peak uematsu, and that's a dude who already made like, several easily top 50 game OSTs with 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8

@theia i love the last boss theme too and i agree the soundtrack as a whole is amazing, Uematsu had an amazing streak
