I'd like to add Gran Turismo as the quintessential racing game for this list. Sure it's a simulator, but it was revolutionary when it came out and changed the landscape for racing games. If we're talking about arcade racing games though, I'd toss in Forza Horizon, it is just an amazing celebration of car culture and provides a fun driving experience that most other racing games can't.
I'd suggest some of the fruits of Steam Greenlight, namely in either the controversial survival crafting rush jobs like Towns and Starforge, the unfortunate development hells of Routine and Project Zomboid, the cult releases of Maia and Miasmata, or the anomaly of a success that is Kenshi.
Somes games that should be here:
- Another World (It's one of the first "artsy" games and one of the rist to use and almost purely enviromental storytelling)
- Ecco The Dolphin (Another artsy game, the earliest example I can think of a game that puts experience over "Fun")
- Ultima IV (The first RPG to have a virtue system based on your choices that games to this day keep using).
