My Year In Trilogies

When looking over my backlog of games and thinking about what I wanted to get to in 2024, it occurred to me that a lot of them formed literal or thematic trilogies. So here they are, in order of how likely I am to complete them by year's end, plus a blurb about why I'm interested and how I'm approaching each.

Yakuza 1-3 Trilogy
+++
Pretty simple: Yakuza 0 became an instant favourite in 2023 and sold me on the rest of the series. I will likely end up playing both the undub of Yakuza (2005) and Kiwami 2 in full as well, but based on ThorHighHeels's recommendation I am treating Kiwami 1 and original 2 as the Real game for the purpose of this list.
Yakuza 4-6 Trilogy
+++
See above, these will all be the PC remasters. I'm setting a boundary for myself by aiming to just do 1-6 in 2024 and then 2025 will be for the spin-off trilogy (Judgments and Ishin) and the Ichiban era trilogy (Yakuza LAD, LAD Gaiden, and LAD Infinite Wealth). I assume by 2026 I'll have another six games to play in this vein either from RGG or Nagoshi's new studio
World of Assassination Trilogy
+++
Played the demo of Hitman (2016) basically as a turn-based game on my severely underpowered laptop back in the day and have sadly had to admire them from afar ever since. I always intended to get to them when I had a powerful enough PC, then when I did in 2022 it was time for Elden Ring and then 2023 was taken up by other games. But what better time to play than in 2024 for their eighth/sixth/third anniversaries, right? Will be playing through the trilogy thing you get with 3 on steam.
Multi-Act Games That Are Extremely Targeted To My Personal Taste And I've Been Holding Off On Playing Each For A While For No Good Reason Trilogy
+++
I think the title sums it up, these are all on steam.
Silent Hill-ogy
+++
In late 2023 I finally began easing into the waters of PS1 and PS2 emulation, so I figured it was high time to get around to these landmarks. By extension, these will be emulated.
Metal Gear Solid Trilogy
+++
As with Silent Hill, a Big Deal I have never experienced due to only having Nintendo consoles in my youth. A little lower on the list as they're a bit more of a time/effort commitment. Weighing options on how exactly I'll end up playing each; I have the GOG releases of 1 and 2 from a few years ago, the Master Collection is obviously out there, will probably end up just emulating.
Halo Trilogy
(1/3 Complete)
+++
Growing up I got to try Combat Evolved and 2 on original hardware once each, then in junior high I'd often hang out with my best friends Ryan and Zach with the latter stomping Ryan and I in 3 multiplayer. in that spirit, I'm gonna see if I can play these primarily/exclusively in co-op with my friend Alan who loves Halo, worst case scenario I play them primarily/exclusively myself and update him as I go. As shown, I'll be playing the versions contained in the Master Chief Collection on steam, debating using a controller for authenticity or a mouse/keyboard for comfort. May dip into Reach and ODST, not super interested in 4/5/Infinite.
Ace Attorney Sequel Trilogy
(1/3 Complete)
+++
After finishing the Great Ace Attorney Chronicles I said I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue with the series, but enough time has passed that my interest is piqued again. The "just play the game for me" mode may be engaged if I'm not feeling it. Will be playing via the Apollo Justice Trilogy remaster on switch whenever it goes on a substantial sale this year.
Shovel Knight Sequel Trilogy
+++
Treasure Trove has been sitting unfinished in my switch library since late 2017, have dabbled in each and I want them done. Not the biggest fan of Shovel Knight but I trust them all to go down smooth at least.
Itsuno Games I Own Trilogy
+++
DMC was a fun time, have had 3 and 5 sitting in my switch and steam libraries for a couple years and I'm ready to burn through them. Dragon's Dogma's mounting reputation and its coming sequel got my attention, so I got it on a steam sale for dirt cheap to round out the trilogy.
Classic Castlevanias Trilogy
+++
For a while I have simply not been good enough at games for Castlevania, but I'm confident I can now take them on with minimal rewind assistance. All are in the collection I have on switch, and they're the three that seem to best represent the series's classic era. Will probably also get to Rondo of Blood whenever I figure out how to do PC Engine emulation.
Remaining Unplayed Zeldas Trilogy
+++
I played a lot of Zelda in 2023 but if you can believe it that was still less than I intended. Will finish off the DS duology via emulator and FSA on original hardware. If Four Swords GBA doesn't get added to NSO this year I will scream so loud.
Daniel Mullins Trilogy
+++
Was strongly recommended Inscryption by friends, the other two came with it on steam and are short so a trilogy it is.
Im-Sim Sampler Trilogy
+++
Similar to Castlevania, the Thiefs, System Shocks, and Deus Ex have always looked cool to me but I wasn't good enough for them. Gonna try them out buffet style, Metal Age and SS1 may get some time too.
Kill The Past Cont'd Trilogy
+++
Played Silver Case in 2023 and really enjoyed it. Despite my fondness for the Wii, No More Heroes intrigued me less as a trilogy than these plus it would require spending money. Intend to do DS emulation for FSR, PC for killer7, and the Switch remaster for 25th Ward (same way I played Silver Case).
Dragon Quest Dealer's Qhoice Trilogy
+++
DQXI was a great introduction but I'm not aiming to plough through the series as a whole. Looking over my options, these three stick out to me the most: the Consensus Best One, the One That Makes Some Weird Cool Choices, and A Very Accessible One Like XI (sorry Loto trilogy). They are big games so this is a "maybe not this year but definitely eventually" situation. All three will be emulated in their original versions (plus a translation patch for V).
Jump Over The Age Trilogy
(1/3 Completed)
+++
Aspirational/conditional, as Citizen Sleeper 2 has no set release date. Citizen Sleeper 1 looked very up my alley and had interesting ideas but the prose disappointed me and I was able to break the economy over my knee with little effort, which deadened the capitalist critique via systems/mechanics. Wanted to revisit it now that the DLC questline is complete and I can try another build, figured why not add In Other Waters and the sequel in there as well for comparison.
Non-Metal Gear Kojima Trilogy
+++
Depending on how the MGS trilogy goes, I may dip into these as well. Snatcher and Policenauts will be emulated with translations, DS I have in my steam library.
Resident Evil Reinterpreted Trilogy
+++
I've struggled with REmake a couple times on switch and have RE2make and RWii4 available to me. Not a high priority, but I would like to get a taste for the series's different eras via a faithful remake, a radical remake, and a port to a control scheme I wish got used more.
Final Fantasy PlayStation Trilogy
+++
These games are fuckin' long but I do have them all on switch. FFVII I've played up until you're back in Barrett's hometown, the other two I've never cracked the seal on. JRPGs have never been my wheelhouse, and materia didn't make as much sense to me as demon capture/fusion in SMT Nocturne, and I'm wary of using the remaster cheats to speed the game along and end up needing to grind anyway. So this has and will likely continue to be slow going and low priority unless it suddenly clicks for me.
Two NES Mega Man Trilogies
+++
Why did I buy this? Why did I think I was gonna get into Mega Man in 2018? I've never played Mega Man, this has only ever been booted up when I do my periodic obsessive rearranging of my switch library because the organization tools on the switch suck.
